Its hard to know. Do you have a 3 pin plug granny charger you can use to test charging the car from another plug? Is there a nearby slow public AC charger you can try?

Tried a 50kw and 150kw charger yesterday and both charged.

Different connector vs my cable but does not seem to be a car issue.

Will contact ohme today to see what is going on. My first ohme had to be replaced before it was even used as it couldnt get online.

Yes… with EI it’s 2-4 So who doing 2-6 as u need 2-3 hrs to charge to 100%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,728 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Energia have (or they did 6 months ago anyway) a standard rate of something like 31c and then two options:

    1. 8c from 2-6am
    2. 16c from 11-8am and 33c from 5-7pm

We were on the first one initially but changed to the 2nd one as it was slightly (maybe €80/year) cheaper based on our usage

Turns out issue on my side. Connector wasnt plugged in far enough on car side, even though green symbol on the dash

Recent Zappi user here and trying to tidy back the cable at end of charge. Does the cable loop neatly around the charger? I seem to have a long loop at end and maybe need to make earlir ones tighter. It is located in a narrow side passage so the bit sticking out is a nuisance for bicycle/bin etc.

I presume a Zappi is the way to go to install a home EV charger.
Can get one from the local builders' providers or from some guy on ebay who looks cheaper.

wouldnt go for zappi myself ive seen too many of them fail but im sure you have done your research,

Buying it loose may be a false economy unless you have someone lined up to install and they have already priced the install for you?

I’ve had 3 zappis fail me.
    one was replaced under goodwill.

There’s a new glo version out from myenergi so I assume the zappi is being phased out. You could look into that. But I also have a Wallbox elsewhere and that has been faultless since 2021.

Also have a good aul ABL original eCars charger in place since 2015. Simple plug and play and that’s flying no issues. Sometimes simple is best.

Oh wow. I didnt know the Zappi's tend to fail. I thought they were rock solid as I see so many of them now.
If not a Zappi then what? The Zappi's tend to be more expensive than others. I also have a solar PV system.

What is the warranty these days on the Zappi's? The 1 year?

I got a bg sync installed from forkearn after recommendations on here and it has been flawless. I literally just plug it in and it charges every time with zero issues.

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

do you have the energy Eddie? Or other myenergi systems?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,182 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

people get worked up over solar, for most people selling your solar to the grid or using it for day time usage makes the most sense and then charge the car at a night rate.

Gumbo gave some options there, id go for something simple without a screen! its basically a higher rated outdoor plug so dont over complicate it

Same here. And id take that any day over a Zappi that a family member has. The Monta app is much more user friendly

Having the option to charge with solar is nice, but for now, it doesn't make sense when you can export and get paid for your solar while charging on a cheaper night rate.

I also think Zappi is not the way to go. After a good bit of looking around, I went with Hypervolt. I've had mine (2.0) 3 years without issue. It has the smart features, like charge from solar, solar+, timed charging and 0-32A power limiting all from the APP. Then you have load balancing to prevent the main fuse from popping. I had to import mine, but they are now available in Ireland.

    Stay Free

Zappi is a great system if you have an EDDI and separate AC coupled battery, very user friendly way of managing car charging/hot water charging and battery use.

For just EV charging there are plenty of cheaper options

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I find the search function to be unreliable. I am going to be buying an EV in the near future. I want to get the charger installed beforehand. When applying for the seai grant do I apply before I get the charger installed or after?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,049 ✭✭✭cobham

The grant is given once evidence that the charger has been installed. The installer handled the paperwork for us and the grant turned up in bank account about 6 wks later.

Apply first, probably best to engage with your installer first to decide on what type of charge point etc. You shouldn't commence work prior to applying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,166 ✭✭✭Buffman

Apply first and once approved you have 6 months to fully complete the work.

    • Do not commence any work before the start date on your Letter of Offer otherwise this expenditure will be deemed ineligible and you will not receive grant support for it.

    • You have 6 months from the date on this Letter of Offer, which will be emailed to you, to complete your installation and return your Payment Request Form to SEAI with all associated evidence whole and complete - Cert 3, Test Record, photo of installation, invoice from electrician.

    • The EV Home Charger grant is valid for 6 months from the date the grant offer is issued, if you do not have the works completed within that time you will not be eligible to claim the grant.

Hi, my zappi charger has given up the ghost. Would anyone have an idea of the going rate to replace a charger? Would I be better going with a local electrician than a company specialising in installation since it would be a more simple job? I think I would go with a more reliable brand if possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭christy c

I would try Fokearn for a quote anyway on the BG Sync, you may have to source it yourself if asking a local electrician.

How long did you have the Zappi out of interest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,132 ✭✭✭homah_7ft

I had the zappi since 2019. Thanks for that. I never heard of Fokearn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭christy c

Fokearn have been recommended here and I have used them myself also. They will do a quote for you online

RIP to another dead Zappi! Do you need all the bells and whistles or would a cheap dumb charger do you?

In fairness any tethered charger will do me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,551 ✭✭✭Masala

quick question…… am having a problem in getting cable back to my fuse board. Attic had a floor installed years ago and as result cable run to board is impossible

can charger be “wired” direct from the meter box back to the charge unit on wall as I can get cable to and from that ..
