Agreed. There's one member here who uses the site as his own personal shop and has been doing so for years. They don't engage in any discussions so why would they not pay? In fact they shouldn't even be allowed to sell here but maybe that's something that could be explored further.

popular demand if it's padraig ye are on about.

Be careful trying to sterilise the place further.

Christ almighty that’s none of your business!

I have no clue who you are talking about, nor do i care, nor should you care, nor should boards care. If it drives traffic then it’s good.

Boards faciliates people talking to each other. If that results in any buy/sells, then good luck to those people, but buyer beware. Dont come crying to boards if you get fooked over - but do let us know who to avoid!

If boards wanted to take a commission, then thats a whole new enterprise, they would need to hire lawyers and all sorts, and then work out VAT and much more. Fantastic example above about selling a gun. Abolsutely fine between two private individuals who can take on their own risks on their own dime. Literal minefield for boards to get involved in.

Also, people need to remember what Odhran and Mike have said. If this all shuts down, it’s purely because it’s not making enough money for the investors/owners. There is no bank or third party creditor banging down the door, this is a proper going concern and all third parties are being paid in full. The ‘crisis’ is ‘not enough profits’. it is not ‘no profits’.

I brought the subject up so I think we should leave it up to Mike & Odhran to decide either way because there's no point dragging this on here.

I’m pretty sure Adverts.ie is not related to boards anymore and hasn’t been for a very long time.

Would imagine most those "words" should be added to a word filter, shouldn't be a concern for moderation until purposely circumvented.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,460 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Very much my business and the business of every other member here who has been asked to donate.

But this isnt the thread for discussing the matter any further.

I'll probably end up subscribing, been here quite a while (2007 before this current username) but I want to see if there's any response to others questions about paying for it with phone carrier billing first.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Except discussions do happen in relation to people who are rapists, pedophiles etc. So adding them to a word filter would not really make a lot of sense.

As someone who likes to repeatedly label what other posters mention as conspiracy theories you have no hesitation in engaging in them yourself.

Calling Trump a Pedo or Child Rapist or Child Sex Pervert is mere speculation at this stage.

    They are very strong allegations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,616 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

I was responding to a poster in relation to filtering certain words.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,479 ✭✭✭Esse85

Yeah why are they allowed to flog stuff?

Can the rest of us members start selling stuff too instead of setting up a legitimate business and accruing expenses and paying tax on the profits?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,448 ✭✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

I thought with for example the cycling forum or the airsoft forum, you had to ba a regular, known, 'respected' poster before you were allowed sell stuff on here, is that not the case?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 55,468 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

You don't have to be a 'regular' poster to sell stuff on the cycling ads forum; too hard to police what regular would mean. We have seen people over the years whose activity on boards would almost be solely limited to that forum.

There are other rules though, one of the main ones being that if you list something for sale on it, it cannot also be on sale elsewhere, e.g. adverts.

As per Esse85's point about profit and tax, it's 99.99% stuff that people are selling secondhand or at a loss. So not exactly profitable or within the radar of the tax man.

Apparently shilling is now allowed, which kinda covers people selling stuff. There is no option to report the post below.

Don't know how long this has been changed but given the lack of time/energy etc to change or post other stuff its strange that time has been found to change the report form.

It's down to changes Vanilla did in the background. If they had added "Other - please specify", it would cover a multitude of sins.

I reported that one, without specifying a reason, and it seems to have been removed.....

I'm surprised so many people are asking about paying using phone credit - assuming this is with Three? I thought most people would have moved to the likes of GoMo 48 etc. My elderly parents still use credit but only because they never access mobile data.

i suspect that's vanilla themselves removing customisations, that what you're seeing now is the default with vanilla, so is not a change that Mike or Odhran themselves made.

Some of us are still on legacy Three Mobile. We pay 20 per month but get to spend the 20 on carrier billing - it's like have a phone for free

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,479 ✭✭✭Esse85

The poster has been selling here almost 10 years.

Can the rest of us start making some sort of homebrew from our home, and advertise on here to acquire hundreds of customers?

We could all do with a few extra quid given the rising living costs.

There needs to be very clear and direct assurance from Mike/Odhran that it is legally or physically impossible for bank card names associated with usernames to end up in a boards database, disclosed to mods, admins or posters or hacked.

"shur why would Mike disseminate that info" doesn't cut it.

I guarantee that there are posters on here who would only subscribe with a high level of anonymity (with the highest being cash or postal order) but won't say that publicly because they won't want to be sneered at for being a luddite or tinfoil hatter.

No offence to Mike or Odhran but the boards office has a track record of bumbling and poor communication. There has been more of it with how this subscription has been handled. When I saw the subscription page asking for an email address, with the way it was worded, I predicted that there would be issues with people entering email addresses other than those they signed up with. if I could predict that why couldn't Mike/Odhran?

@BrianD3 Why are you harping on about swipe again, it was the weekend when you raised the (non) issue and I have tagged Mike/Odhran already on it. Give them a chance to get back to us on it? Open the below post of mine that has information on what information the merchant receives.

I wonder are people conflating the right to post anonymously with a right to be completely anonymous? I think one is offered by boards.ie (anonymous or maybe better phrased pseudonymous posting).

To post you need an email, which is verified. When you are logged in each session has a captured IP address, which may be useful in identifying you. Other data points (like details in your posts) may undermine your anonymity.

Boards.ie may use these details to stop you logging in, posting, and if required can be used in legal situations or if requested by Gardai, etc.

Yes, of course there is scope to try be completely anonymous by using a burner / temp email to register and always use a VPN, and being very careful what you post etc etc. You may even opt to have a specific device, with say a PAYG plan, etc to be belt n braces.

But therein anonymity arises from the user taking extraordinary measures to ensure their own anonymity, it's not something boards.ie is offering or doing for you. I don't believe they could legally guarantee total anonymity.

Perhaps you accept all this but are concerned if paying by card might change this.

    1. Payment, unlike registering your email or disclosing an IP is completely voluntary. You are not required to provide payment details. So don't.
    2. If you still want to pay, just like burner email addresses and VPNs, the amounts are small so you could purchase a prepaid debit card (like swirl) and use that. I believe there may be crypto linked cards too that could offer similar anonymity (may be wrong).

    Hi all -

I saw a comment about my lack of posting on this thread - just to clarify, nothing deliberate or damning here…

…I am simply out of the country on my annual holidays, so I just came across the financial difficulties news for the first time today (quite belatedly I know) when I was checking into my work email about something else.

I am very sorry to hear about this: it is really frustrating to be knocked sideways by recently imposed changes to Google, etc.

I fully support the subscription drive, and have just signed up myself. Thank you to the always amazing team for your efforts.

    John.

@Cloud Did you use the same email as your boards account? Because your not showing as paid member yet? PM 'Boards.ie Mike' if you used a different email!

When your sorted with it your going to knock me out of the top 5 Oldest members subbed.

Exactly @corkie - I was just messaging Mike the story - when Ed Curry and I set up the Irish Games Network (including quake.ie) with Telecom Internet, we were given email addresses "for life". My old one stopped working last year as I couldn't justify paying for it, so I have a disconnect between my subscribed email and email here. (Or maybe I never subscribed in the first place, aha!)
