I don't read the forum but you are the HI-larious anecdote child yes. 2 pages of your crap we had to wade through here and your back to waste more time.

    good child.

    I'm not ranting about you.

I'm pointing out how you're moaning about the lack of hard line moderation in CA when you're one of a handful of people who've made it their business to act in a manner that would have been actionable until the rule change.

Everyone else can just get along like normal functioning adults but you're here griefing about a problem only you are causing.

How about you change your behaviour instead of complaining that no one will enforce that change on you in this feedback thread?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,930 ✭✭✭✭Ha Long Bay

I will give one example. A poster who could have been thread banned from the forum, I have no idea but is now link dumping 10 year old articles on a thread in the "Immigration and Ireland" thread to continue the pro russia agenda.

    image.png

    This is not discussion.

Unless its another post, here's that in context

    IMG_20250720_031543.jpg

    That's not a link dump.

And yet none of this has anything to do with this thread

Have no interest in the CA forum and have no wish to read about it in this totally unrelated thread

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,686 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Indeed.. Not the thread for it. I will say though that I haven't seen much difference really in certainly the immigration thread since the rules were relaxed. If anything it seems to flow better.

I'll give the same advice I always do - if it bothers/offends someone that much, just ignore/block the poster. Censorship of opinions you don't like however is never the answer.

You get way too wound up by other people's posts. At the end of the day it's strangers on the internet.

Put people that annoy you on ignore. Life's too short.

I ventured into the Trump thread yesterday, the words Pedo and Child Rapist as well as many other serious slurs were being thrown around.

Boards could be looking at a defamation case with this sort of language.

If you have such an issue with it, maybe start a proper feedback thread about it, instead of taking this one back off topic?

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 21,885 Mod ✭✭✭✭Leg End Reject

We'll never have a situation where everyone is happy with moderation.

Reports are biased, no one ever reports a poster they agree with in a heated discussion. They might report poster A for being uncivil, all fair enough as poster A was.

But poster A quoted poster B and poster B's post was demonstrably worse. Poster B wasn't reported though because the reporter agrees with them.

Everyone wants moderation that allows themselves, and those that they agree with, to be able to post freely, but that censors those they disagree with. If everyone looks at who and what they've reported they'll see this is true.

Something new is being tried in CA, let's give it a chance to see how it works out and stop dragging it into this thread, plenty of active users don't even post in CA, but reading this thread you'd think it was be all and end all of Boards.

If anyone want to discuss CA moderation, then start a Feedback thread on it. This isn't the place for it.

Is there an anonymous option. I don't mind supporting Boards, I get a lot from it, but not too keen on putting my name etc onto a subscribers list via my CC details.

I always had ads blocked but the jumping has still noticeably lessened in the last week .👍

Boards.ie does not see the card details at any point. They're only seen by the payment processor, Stripe. boards.ie only sees the email address, which is why they need to match.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 16,101 Mod ✭✭✭✭smacl

Corporate sponsors was my suggestion, more thinking of local firms that are in the specific niche markets of specific subforums, e.g. Cycle Superstore or the Giant Store in the cycling forum could benefit from exposure to that very specific audience. Basically, these markets way too small Twitter, Insta, etc.. to have any interest but still potentially lucrative to a much smaller site such as this.

Similarly, boards merchandise. We've had a long history of boards cycling wear on the cycling forum. At the same time we have long running theads on where to buy cycling gear. Seems like another opportunity to sell some sponsorship.

In addition to lending technical skills, I'm sure there are plenty of folks in the community with marketting expertise who might be willing to lend a hand. This could help not just with the above, but also with ideas for marketting boards.ie itself for minimal outlay, which is clearly going to be needed if new users are to be brought on stream. Not sure if boards has tried to actively market itself in recent years, but all I've ever come across is word of mouth.

Of course Stripe don’t share credit card details, that’s the whole point of them.

I think the question is does boards see the name on the credit card in addition to the email address. This is not something a mod would know, unless told by Odhran/Mike. I am aware of a business that knows exactly who their customers are when using Stripe to process payments. This would be the norm for most businesses, but in this case it’s easy to see why some subscribers would want to retain confidentiality.

Who is "Boards" in the above question? Mods and Admins will have no access to payment or personal details. So won't know any names. I don't know who has paid subscription and who hasn't. The posters on the Subscription thread and those searching by "paid member" know more about who has subscribed than I do!

I don't know exactly how Stripe works and if the office gets notification of the name on the credit card used. But even if it does there would be absolutely no reason for the office to pass that information on to any mod or admin. It just won't happen.

Oh absolutely agreed, it would just be Odhran/Mike who would have access to such details. Who they might share that with is out of anyone’s else’s control, hence the original question.

@Big Bag of Chips I tagged them both in this reply when the non-issue of it was raised.

…..might be able to confirm that since the payment is through a secure third party, your card details are not provided to boards.ie. Just a confirmation you have paid, email and possibly the last few digits on the card for verification process.

And the last few digits is just speculation on my part?

I know a fair few members who sell a fair amount of stuff on here and have done for years for free, should they not have to pay a subscription now in order to do so? It would seem only fair IMO.

Think that's not the best idea at the moment, it was stated subscription is voluntary. It would be a mistake to try to force some members to pay, because of their way using the site.. IMO. That would inevitably lead to arguments boards doesn't really need right now..

Hit the switch to keep the lights on.

Not force them to pay, only let them sell stuff if they pay. Why should they have a platform to freely sell goods but not contribute to the saving of the site?

Exactly. Reminds me of the French PM looking to try and take away 2 public holidays this week. Can kickingly stupid.

Outta curiosity I looked at the thread views for 1 of the sellers he's on about and it's 345.2K. And that's not including all the other places users went.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭con747

I'm not sure exactly what your'e on about, I am talking about normal members who sell here making profits freely while the ship is sinking.

I think a go fund me would work here. Anyone selling could drop a few quid in, optionally. Or buyer.

I bought a 4 figure rifle recently on the shooting forum. That I couldn’t have without the forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,514 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Anywhere else you have to pay to sell - its not a bad idea and doesn't stop anyone else looking at the item

Though implementation may be another thing.

Not really though, the flag option is there if it went that way and members sell stuff without helping save the site in some way. I just find it a bit rich that people are making money here but not bothering to try save the site it's being made on.
