Don't use Phonewatch. Had one of their systems and it wasn't being monitored! They told me it was and when I set it off as I knew it wasn't surprise, surprise, they didn't get notified !!!!

Ask Garda what they want BEFORE you buy it.

That's strange. I've phonewatch around 4 years, never had a break in but the few times we accidentally triggered it they were ringing my phone within 15 seconds.

For under 6 you can use a self monitored system, most local companies will sell you one. I used the Ring alarm system and the Garda were happy with it, i found it excellent as every black friday sale i added more cameras and alarms to it. I have since moved to HomeSecure and very reasonable price and fully monitored. Still run x2 additional self monitored systems in conjunction (i already had them so were free and installed)

In my previous house i had Phonewatch, the monitoring service was excellent but price was stupid, also when i moved they would not let me bring it with me and wanted me pay another sign up fee, Plus a higher monthly costs. It was sold to me on the price that every year the price would drop for loyalty. Left them and glad as every year they hiked the price up, opposite to what sale rep promised. Homesecure price is fixed and after certain number years you own they system outright.

When i rang Homesecure the gentlman asked why i was installing on, explained i hunt and wanted extra security for my firearms. He was also a hunter so went out of his way to keep costs down, a nice touch he added in bits for free after i had paid. To be honest i was very happy with the service.

I had mentioned a ring one to him and he just said once it meets standards it will be fine but never said what was the standard

There is no actual spec for a self monitored alarm system.

Only need to have a cert/spec when go into the monitored alarm system

others might know more but thats from what reads online.

Actual Garda may say otherwise but thats as per the SI. Some will argue with you over the meaning of a solid structure too trying say has to be concrete. This is not the case so dont argue but politely explain thats not whats in the SI or the legal definition of a solid structure.

To keep the very happy what i like to do is seperate any rifle bolts and mags and have them in another safe, shotguns i add a trigger lock inside safe. Plus you have to keep ammo seperate, dont have them sitting on a sheft in a bedroom. I leave a few boxes in the second safe, rest are in a locked storage case in a different locked room in the house hidden awayc.

I suggest you meet and exceed the requirements, once keep the law happy, it shows your very consideate of safety, plus also helps if have kids around they cant accidently get hold of a working firearm.

My 2nd advice would be if plan on getting more that 5 at some point in next 12 months, just get a monitored alarm and save hassel later on.

Once go over 5 expect a lot extra secirity checks, inspections and background checks.

Also get the spec of your door lock and send that in on application, also what brand safe you have send pick of the manufacturers standard it was built too. Give them more than ask for and will help

I started off with a non monitored alarm, bought it in a DIY store and fitted it myself, not a problem.

fast forward to now more firearms and a monitored alarm.

I have 4 firearms with a many number of years and I had a non montiored alarm fitted to the room where their firearms are stored by a local company. I also had a 5 bolt deadlock on the door of the room and I have never had any issue since.

I’d recommend getting a local security Company to fit an alarm to the standards in the link below and maybe even get a quote 1st and show to Garda to see would he be happy with it.
