@SupaCat95 Are you seriously complaining about EV ownership while refusing to install a home charger?🤣🤣

Why should we have to fit an EV for a car we didnt choose, when we plan to sell in a few years.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,448 ✭✭✭SupaCat95

Never said it was the postie that told me about the cost of the charger it was an electrician plucked the quote out of the air. Postie told me they have to get towed a few times in the winter.

We took the Diesel for a lot of our longer trips and especially when staying away from home a few days +. It just wasn't worth the hassle.

A Leaf with what 80% capacity you'd get around 80 kms range @ a reasonable to expect 22 Kwh/100 Km, sometimes better, sometimes even less. Of course that's crap, if you can get one for 2-3 K it's a cheap yoke for school runs, shops and local kid taxi, but, that's 80 Kms round trip max. Of course any petrol car in reasonable condition can go anywhere any time so even 2nd hand low range EV are a bad choice for many but some will be willing to put up with it, you can still fast charge but that would be woefully slow, ask me how I know.

Most modern ev have cooling systems so hot weather , lots of driving and fast charging can increase charge times due to reduced power for the nissan leaf and Renault Zoe and any other passively cooled EV, probably the best cooling system of any EV out there is the BMW i3. I never say more than around 30 Deg C no matter what I did and if I did see that it would quickly cool down to around 22 deg C.

Most modern EV have cooling and many now even have battery heating to help with slow charging when the battery is cold but there are still a lot of issues with cold battery charging, it can add a fair amount of time on a charge.

I wouldn't leave EV in the garage either nor would I leave kids in car on a hot day with the AC on like some people seem to do while they run into shops, what if it shut off ? what if there was fire ? real possibilities, real fears but I haven't heard of EV fires in Ireland yet, not impossible but even as low as the risks are , Lithium batteries are highly volatile. I wouldn't charge a kids battery scooter in the house either, if I did have to I would certainly have a smoke alarm near by, the fumes are very toxic.

Regarding grid, day time could be an issue in the years to come especially if people with no home chargers would be unfairly expected to use the public charging network, a lot of people would probably use them in the day. I can't imagine many people willing to change their lives to suit car charging, at that point I'd say people will just ditch the car and move to 2 wheels of different kinds.

There's roughly 5Gwh of generation needed during the day, most today was around 5.2 slacking off after dinner, 3.8 Gw was the least around 2am this morning and that is considerably higher than it was a few years ago, when I was working shift it was around 2.5 at night, so EV, heat pumps, data centres are having a massive impact on night time supply, of course there's still plenty of capacity at night, it's just that what they call "the bath tub effect" is filling up fast.

Rural areas severely lack high power chargers, absolutely. I'm not talking 100 Kw any more, we need 400 Kw as the new standard. If some Chinese cars can now charge at 400 Kw, we're still rolling out a few 350 Kw charger, there are just around 36x 350 Kw chargers in Ireland , yet the Chinese are making cars that can charge at 400 Kw and to put that into perspective, the Nissan Leaf Gen I 24 Kwh could charge at 40 Kw max , briefly then swing down to 30-35 Kw or less if the battery was cold.

While I know these Chinese cars will see 400 KW for a few mins it's still a long way off what we will find in Ireland at reasonable price for years. Even so, you're still going to be hanging around chargers for a while.

Lack of Mechanics is a national problem, wages are dirt for apprentices, wages in general are not fantastic yet dealers charge high price, everyone moans about cost of dealer charges but fail to understand that People have to get paid who work on their beloved cars which they have no problem getting into debt for.

Another issue, mechanics want to work on the mechanical bits of cars, not software and the BS revolved around modern computer tech in cars and Firmware and warranty issues are a mental f1ck especially when it comes to dealing with warranty issues , the mechanic has to spend time sending back endless logs, back and forth nonsense, no one wants to deal with that crap, back in the day it was a lot easier.

Cars are being made without the mechanic in mind when it comes to repairs, they are a lot more difficult to work on and it's p1ssed off too many mechanics. You'll have auto technicians working on EV but, this will mostly be software related nonsense, issues with infotainment, sure might as well be in helpdesk job at that rate, Expensive modules replaced not individual components, all at great expense.

What in God's name are you on about, some Toyota verso needed you to get out to get up a hill and that's a black mark against evs? This is madness and then you see who is thanking your posts 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,448 ✭✭✭SupaCat95

If the Verso is lighter than the EV, how is the EV going to get up the hill the petrol Verso struggled with?

Don't take the Lord's name in vane……..It's disgusting on a public forum.

I someone had to get out for the car to get up a hill it's obviously underpowered or on crap tyres. My 1 litre Golf has never struggled getting up any hills, including the 22% grade up to Ticknock.

I'm starting to wish I never started this thread, opened a can of worms. I'm no wiser now than I was at the start. I think I'll keep admiring the Renault at a distance rather than in my own driveway. I should probably be grateful I have a reliable, albeit v old, diesel to get around in. Thanks anyway to those who offered advice.

Did you miss the bit in the paper about 2 weeks ago that they are cutting the supplements for 3rd year apprentices?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,717 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Lol No, I didn't see it, that will help alright.

I did hear on the radio a few months ago in the car saying the solution to the shortage of mechanics is to bring in foreign mechanics, yeah, bring in foreign mechanics to keep conditions and pay sh1t like they did in I.T and hospitals the b1stards.

The dumbass on the radio said " I know a qualified mechanic trying to get into Ireland but he can't get a visa", some nonsense like this. Incredible the mindset in this country.

i went to EV in Feb from petrol i20. Got ID3 for decent price.

pros - great to drive. amazing in comparison to previous 1.4l petrol . . range about 240km - 20-80% battery. that key to understand that mainly you charge from 20 -80 only and only to 100% if going to big smoke so the whole range is complicated thing - you have to deduct around 20% for real world range - more if winter and cold etc . Very cheap to run - can charge 240km for around 6e overnight rate. so save a packet. will never go back to ICE for my regular drive to work etc

cons - need to be organized - i charge 2 per week but if something important suddenly would need to use ICE car . Have second one in house so less an issue,. the fast chargers will fill up 200km in 20 mins however need to find one and it to be free, there are multiple apps and providers for public charge points so steep learning curve but once you have RFID cards for ESB /Easy go etc then sorted.

long term servicing is simple. mainly tyres to sort out. touch wood not had any computer issues. very happy with the switch but there are drawbacks re: range and charger network still has some way to go.

I'm sure you can weed out the sensible advice from the hysteria, good luck.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 20-80 thing if you are driving it regularly and not leaving it sit around at 100 percent it's not a big issue to charge to that once a week. Do you use public chargers often?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

You could charge on the way to/from the appointment at a station that has more than 2 chargers. AC charging while parked is a nice bonus but wouldn't rely on it in most places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,448 ✭✭✭SupaCat95

No these are in rural villages. there are no accessible charging stations while going into an hour appointment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,717 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Deleted due to discovery of post containing fake news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭User1998

If your using the car regularly theres no reason not to charge from 0% to 100%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭User1998

Its just a bunch of idiots in the comments as usual speculating that it is an EV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,717 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Fair enough, yeah makes sense because I never heard of that in Ireland, that's not to say it hasn't happened I'm just not aware of it.

In fact, I'll delete the comment then, you the same, not have that fake **** appearing here. The link is in your quote of my comment.

Why can’t she leave the house every morning with 100%?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭User1998

Because they won’t install a charger incase the car catches fire😂

A modern long range EV can drive around rural villages for 6+ hours a day, so assuming you have more than 1 hour of appointments a day you might not have to charge at all
