Meanwhile, it's understood that businessman Declan Ganley has been actively canvassing various independent TDs and Senators looking for their backing.

Two-time former presidential candidate and businessman, Sean Gallagher, has confirmed he will not contest this year's election.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/2025/0715/1523624-ireland-presidential-election/

understood means somebody else reported it but I cant find who.

Whatsername on the Six-One just said about Ganley too.

Another preening egotistical fool with no history of public service trying to get on the act. I hope all of the major parties shut him out.

Also we are influenced by Britain and they have had 3 female prime ministers, while we've had 2 female deputy prime ministers (Tainiste), along with 2 elected female presidents.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

maybe he’s the ‘outside politics figure’ Peadar toibin has been courting? I’d say Iona , gript etc. would be delighted for him to be in the race even if he had no hope, they could justify dragging the debate onto their turf…

No doubt they would, but that still doesn't provide him with any credentials.

Why doesn't Ronan Mullen try to run? Or Sharon Keogan?

They have at least been elected to the upper house several times. And it would be an honest representation of who that cohort are and what they believe.

Ganley couldn't get elected to the Tidy Towns over the last 30 years.

I'll have a bet on Mairead McGuinness as soon as all the nominees are in, if the price isn't prohibitive.

think johnny Logan would make a great president…..

imo the main imponderable at this stage is whether Mary Lou runs. If you think she probably won’t it might be best to place the bet now…

presidential election is Sui generis though. Peter Casey absolutely bombed as a dail candidate but came a very creditable second running for the Aras. I’d say ganley has a shot at an oireschtas nomination, independent Ireland support would likely be crucial…

From the Irish Times, link below

“Independent Ireland leader Michael Collins said Ms Connolly would “absolutely” make a good president and the party would give “serious consideration” to supporting her.”

Also pouring a lot of cold water on Peadar Toibin’s 25 person selection group/process idea.

So with McGuinness and Connolly declared there are now 2 entrants* in what’s likely to be a 4/5 horse race. So the two of those plus a FF official or provisional or general pool candidate and a SF candidate if Mary Lou looses the internal battle to stay put and gets nominated. And possibly one other personality if enough anti establishment sentiment can be corralled and held together.

    * Thats assuming that Connolly can get to 20 nominations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,783 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

yeah I know but ganley might be able to win them round by promising to take their specific issues on board in a way Connolly is obviously never going yto. I don’t think he’ll ultimately secured the 20 noms but I can’t think he be launching a big charm offensive in Leinster house if he didn’t have some positive prior soundings…

does anyone genuinely see McGuinness winning?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,500 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Everyone I spoke to today about this said they wouldn't be voting for her. To be fair that was just my parents who still vote FF and my sister who's more of a lefty liberal than myself. So that's 0/4 votes from the dulpit family. She's goosed.

Realistically though, i could see her winning, but I'm assuming FG will find a way to screw up yet another election.

She is seen as the main target for all others - the complete establishment candidate - it doesn’t help that she has the personality of a wet haddock, competent at media but oh so very boring and dry.

“Old Man Harris” won’t do any favours to her campaign either.

She is there to be knocked off her perch.

Depends what kind of campaign it is. If it's a low interest, low turnout sort of election like in 2018 then it would definitely a favour a safe, establishment figure like Mairead McGuinness.

If it's more like 2011 and it captures the public attention then no, I think the wider public who aren't entrenched in political allegiances will see her as too much of a "toe the party line" FG'er and lacking the sort of charisma and independent thinking desired for the role.

Still too many variables to make a call. The outcomes of 2 of the last three “real” presidential elections (1990 and 2011) were difficult to call right up to election day. A lot depends on who else is in the race, especially if there is another middle ground candidate. If it gets to transfers and eliminations it’s still wide open. She is electable, but then there is a lot of water to flow under the bridge and having Harris backing her could be a severe handicap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,807 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    She will win.

By a mile. And I've said so for the last 18 months.

I think myself that there is a fair chance Fianna Fáil may actually not nominate anyone now, especially if they see McGuinness lined up against Connolly and another loony lefty from SF, whether its Mary Loo or Conor Murphy or anyone else.

Connolly and SF would cannibalise each other's vote, and meanwhile McGuinness will hoover up the votes of farming, small business, the professional class, the graduate class, and everyone who gets up early, and pays for everything.

And its very much in FFs interest to have someone like McGuinness in the Áras. Someone with whom they can work. Better she have an FG blazer on than a pinko tabard.

I don’t think it’s quite that simple. If there is a right of centre candidate, especially if they run with some of the populist dog whistles, they could eat into McGuinness’s vote, and hold her back on FPVs. If Mary Lou runs, she will bring out a cohort that wouldn’t otherwise go near a polling station. And that’s when transfers become important. As it stands McGuinness could well head the poll, but could be undone by transfers.

And that’s before you take account of The large chunk of FF that will never ever give a preference to the old enemy, under any circumstances. Never.

I really think it’s all to play for at this stage.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

There might be an argument for least worst candidate depending on the final line up - whilst I’d prefer not to see her win, I wouldn’t say that if certain others end up on the ticket -I’d have no choice then to vote for the person I believe has the best chance of beating those I don’t want to see in office.

STV being used to the ultimate degree, to vote against the candidate you want to see loose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭Bishop of hope

Catherine Connolly could do better than expected if its a small field of candidates. A protest vote mid govt could get her more votes than any other candidate. She makes many anti establishment speeches which touch a chord in a lot of people. Regardless of whether the president as seen as ineffectual or not, she'd get a lot of votes from just anti FG FF voters. She might even appeal to the younger voter as a voice against govt. And she looks like manys a sweet granny might look.

Independent Ireland are such a disappointment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,307 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

They are such a ramshackle and broadly spread outfit it’s hard to know what to expect from them. Can’t really see them remaining in lock-step in the long term. Certainly difficult to see them having much of an impact on this election anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,807 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    They are just politically naive.

Every new party needs an experienced hand or two if they are to make a fist of it. Ideally governmental or long term Dáil experience. Des O'Malley, Peadar Tóibín, even Lucinda Creighton.

Independent Ireland has none of those. Absolute bunch of bluffers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,807 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

She is the right of centre candidate. And the government parties have it in their control to ensure that nobody from outside is nominated that is further to her right.

I think you're wrong about that FF cohort. That sort are either dead or dying. The analysis of the last general election showed huge transfers between FF and FG.

And even if they do exist, their choice may well be McGuinness or nobody at all. And them staying at home is all good news for Mairéad.

Long interview of Catherine Connolly by Sean O'Rourke from February this year https://www.rte.ie/radio/podcasts/22489990-catherine-connolly/

Mostly covers her background, political path, housing, opposition and foreign affairs.

Worth a listen but I don't know if it would endear anyone to her, Im a lefty but not impressed by her judgement in associating with Daly and Wallace and meeting a pro-Assad MP in Syria etc, though she doesn't resile from that.
