and how much would the banks charge for that? There is a reason the stores get paid per return which isn't that much. The banks charge 1-3% in transaction fees. So the shop would get?

The codes are meant to be shared across all RVMs but it does require updates to be carried out which sometimes doesn't happen. It isn't about increasing footfall it is a mistake or poor administration by either the supplier or the retailer.

Fees would be minimal. SEPA is basically free, banks charge a fee to process payment files, but the cost of transfer is free. With the transaction volume re-turn would have (not to mind the perpetual 50m plus deposit balance) re-turn's cost processing cost would be minimal (BOI rack rate for SME SEPA payments is 8c per transaction, I expect re-turn could negotiate this to 1-2c per transaction).

For cards, as these are refunds, sales rates don't aoply indeed some parts of card fees work in reverse when refunding. Again, re-turn could negotiate minimal fees for these transactions.

They could also build in limits to manage their processing cost (e.g. minimum withdrawal of €10, etc).

I am not saying the overall facility of direct consumer reimbursement would be low cost; developing & maintaing the app, keeping consumer banking details secure, meeting potential regulations around anti money laundering, defending against fraud, ensuring operational resilience, etc all of these would have cost. But transaction fees would not be significant.

Again I say re-turn was not designed for direct reimbursement and changing it now will be the biggest impediment.

Odd one today in my local Aldi. Machines reasonably reliable and staff (when you can find one) are excellent, as in even offering my return € when machine malfunctioned and no receipt was issued. They were taking my word.

I digress,, first time seeing someone asking for cash refund. The cashier looked at his receipt, and with a ??? fob on her keyring had to enter in the number of returns on the receipt, which was approximately 40 items or so.

Swipe once, twice, three times etc. And most swipes needed at least 2 passes.

She apologized for holding me up, but what a joke.

I processed a manual return in Mr Price and it was that slow, they gave the cash back.

I was picking up litter the other day and got one of those Polish Coke cans.

The barcode is not registered on the DRS site.

There was fast food litter nearby so it might have come from a chipper.

Obviously I don't know if a deposit was charged but just a warning to watch out for them.

Takeaway near me uses unregistered Danish cans. They don't charge a deposit for them though.

I suppose from a consumer point of view that's not so bad.

At least you're not being ripped off.

Having just spent a few days on holidays. It’s fairly obvious a lot of food services waste isn’t being recycled at all.

Loads of items with deposits just ending up straight in the bin. Also, I was in two cafes in Cork City and asked where to put our glass bottles and was told to just throw them in the bin with the general waste. People were even carefully leaving them on the counter and the waitresses was just telling them to put them straight into the bin.

Sort of feels like a waste of time when cafes can’t even accept back glass bottles.

And I wonder if they switched to glass bottles to avoid dealing with Re-turn.

Great result for the environment there.

Maybe this has been answered previously, but I haven’t time to read back through the whole thread.

Went to a big Tesco yesterday (one with four machines) with a box of cans and bottles. Put them all in, all were accepted with no rejections, but when they were all in, nothing happened. No receipt logo came up on the screen, and no receipt was issued. I pressed the screen in a few spots and a square and keypad came up with the words “enter password “.
I rang the number on the sticker on the machine but it wouldn’t connect.
I asked the nearest cashier about it and she just shrugged her shoulders.

It’s not about the money, I’m just a bit miffed about it is all.

I can’t get back there now until next weekend, is there anyone I can contact in the meantime?

I had a similar problem in Dunnes some time ago.

I posted my experience here to relate the excellent response of customer service.

She got her keys, came out to the RVM with me and opened the front of the machine to recover my receipt.

Tesco would most likely have done something similar if you had gone to the customer service desk.

It could be worthwhile using the contact section on the Tesco website to lodge a complaint.

You could also phone the branch but make sure you get the name of the person you are talking to.

I don't think so tbh - they were just the usual over the top snooty brands like San Pellegrino water, because obviously you need to import bottled water from one of the driest places in Europe, to one of the wettest places… makes total sense! The bottled water industry will probably go down as one of the examples of ridiculousness of this era.

Why banks? I'm talking about an app on my phone that can store the voucher, I don't want it to go directly into my bank account. Return finished, tap phone to NFC to store voucher on app.

There seems to be some alternative wa for reciepts to come out of the printer, either by accident or design. A large number of times I’ve seen the receipts being ejected out the bottom of the printer and straight into the returns container, infact, I’ve found several of them in there when I’ve been changing them over. That’s the first thing a staff member should have done.

Seems to be a great magnet and employer to certain cohorts of society.

Just no return to the pot from that cohort unfortunately

You wouldn’t believe how much simpler the password actually is than that. I don’t mean that it’s 0000 or anything like that. They are all unique to the store; and in that there is the password.

I was at an RVM today and there was two of those Danish coke cans sitting on top of it.

I tried putting one through but no dice.

I suppose to that means there are at least two (Polish and Danish) dodgy sources.

The weird thing with Danish cans being cheaper for takeaways here is that cheap takeaways in Denmark use British cans... I wonder is there somewhere else using Irish ones!

If we’re smuggling* cheap Coca-Cola from Denmark, I think we can safely say we’ve lost the plot on pricing!

    (*Not actual smuggling.)

There is no RVM in Lahinch, a small town in west Clare.

    It has two supermarkets.

A staff member said that there is an exemption for small supermarkets.

The number of holiday homes and visitors/tourists there suggest to me that the town should have a RVM.

During last week, I visited the SuperValu in Milltown Malbay, and I have never seen such a queue for the two machines.

Entire coast of Clare seems pretty badly served actually. Two in Kilkee, two in Ennistymon, one in Miltown Malbay and the visitor centre at Loop Head (that sounds like a manual return point to me, but I've never been).

This is the sort of stuff where the state should be interfering to ensure that more get rolled out.

I've heard that the service station in Newcastle is getting a second bulk rvm installed, so there's obviously a need in non supermarket settings (it has a Spar, but that's fairly small).

There's also two supermarkets in Newcastle, both with 2 rvms.

Perhaps a non-supermarket in Lahinch could look into getting one or at least a standalone rvm? As you say the summer influx should make it viable.
