Even in the fabled 70’s Dubs v Kingdom. It was a bit one sided as a rivalry. Kerry dominated after Dublin failed in the three in a row in 78. It was the Kerry show after that. The Dubs lucky to win one Sam a decade. I always remember a story Wooly Parkinson told on his podcast.

He was in college with Alan Brogan or whatever it was. And Brogan said to him I will win an AI. Really confidently. Wooly amazed. Brogan explained on average Dublin win one Sam a decade.

Honestly some people on here must not know their GAA and/or must be very young! Dublin and Kerry are far from the “old firm”. Kerry are more like Rosenberg in the Norwegian league for most of their history dominate and consistent.

I believe Kerry have lost the most AI finals in history. Which says it all as they have won the most too.

Edit- And people forget for many of the years of the foundation of the GAA. Dublin teams were not really Dublin teams. Full of non-Dubs. Heffo and Vinnies sorted that out. Dubs only after that. It meant Dublin fans had a team they could identify with. https://www.independent.ie/editorial/StoryPlus/decades-of-the-dubs-1950s-1960s/

When it didn't matter. The AI competition starts for the big teams at the PQF or QF stage. That's knockout championship & the standard & intensity much higher than any games before.

safe to say you don’t understand the Ulster championship

Cork are 2nd to Kerry in All Irelands lost and well back in the roll of Honour for All Irelands won. Cork has a bigger population than Kerry but isn't still producing footballers good enough to win All Irelands. I think alot of it is due to the coaching standards in the county. Not good enough and they are doing nothing to change that either.

I do. Kerry knocked 2 of them out in the knockouts

I wish Meath didn’t beat Kerry, now. Looks like it gave Kerry the required kick up the arse.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Hurling is no1 in Cork. Football is just for fellas who can't hurl there. I remember when Cork won Sam in 2010 they seemed more concerned about the hurlers!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    uh huh

Donegal not beating Armagh by as much in a final earlier counts as a stick when Kerry losing to Meath doesn’t…

Intensity yards yada… Shall see in 2 weeks anyway

kerry beat armagh tyrone and derry in the league… unfortunately lost to Donegal in Killarney… donegal ran them off the pitch that day… there athleticisim is freakish

It still amazes me though. Despite the big clubs in the city like Nemo or the Barrs, Most of football is played in North West and West Cork and that is still a big area of Cork all in where there are enough numbers to produce enough quality footballers. But they just arent there or else not developed properly if they are.

The closer comparison to Kerry in GAA would be Kilkenny. They have nearly the same amount of All Irelands (36) and lost the most finals on top of that by a decent margin too (29). If its accepted that hurling is a religion there, then it should be seen that football-mania is the catalyst in Kerry as well.

Sure its widely accepted that Heffo's Dublin were the first to popularise football among native Dubs, they were soccer mad before that and any of their successful All Ireland teams were seemingly backboned by culchies. Although now it does seem to be breaking into the more affluent, less GAA-centric areas more now than before.

So I would discredit population being the main driver of success anywhere. Sure despite being classed as a city, Kilkenny city has a smaller population than Carlow town!

And everyone forgets Kerry's sole AI hurling title means they have 39 senior titles accumulatively, two more than Cork

Dublin won lots of AIs over a 100 years ago and then obviously recently, but in between they were only winning once a decade on average.

Kerry have been winning more consistently but even then they go through droughts.

So the Old Firm isn't a good comparison.

The All Ireland is relatively egalitarian compared to most soccer leagues.

There's so much work going into underage structures these days that I don't think Kerry will dominate again.

Dublin won't win much in the next few years but with their population, they'll come again.

I can see them winning Hurling and Football doubles in the future.

    Football's huge in Cork.

They probably lose some players to hurling but not many.

If someone's talented they'll focus on one sport anyway.

    Since 1986

    Aberdeen won 1980, 1984, 1985

    Dundee United 1983

    Thanks.

    My point still stands.

There's no comparison to the Old Firm.

I'd be amazed if anyone outside kerry Dublin Tyrone and maybe donegal won an Ireland in the next 10 years. Kerry are just relentless every year, Dublin will come back stronger and now Tyrone have serious underage talent coming through. Donegal 2012 and Armagh 2024 were novice winners and you might get something like that every 10 12 years. The other teams are just to unreliable. Mayo Galway Derry Cork etc just have not got it. After that meath monaghan roscommon are just average Sam maguire teams at best. The most open all Ireland in years will probably be won by the most successful county.

The majority of Kerry are 26 to 28 ish so will be strong for a few years yet.

There's plenty of young talent too to be introduced.

Tyrone will be a force in 2 years maybe.

Donegal will be strong as Jimmy remains.

Armagh might have a couple of retirements but still have good youngish players.

Galway are past their peak but should still be competitive.

I can't see Dublin winning anything for a few years. The new manager needs to build a new team.

Hard to argue with any of that. Donegal may be peaking this year though as Murphy isn't getting any younger and McGuinness may see this as his best chance to grab Sam in the first year of the new rules - before other counties get to grips with them better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

    Murphy's not that important.

    Donegal have a youngish team.

    Jimmy's the most important person.

He'll probably give it 4 years at least.

It also changed the nature of the quarter finals. Kerry v Galway and Armagh v Meath would have been different.

Donegal the first team to ever win 9 championship games in one season and the first side ever to play an 11th game in a single season.

    Kerry played 8 won 7 lost 1  scored 15-175 (220)  conceded 4-160 (172)  average per game scored 27.5 and conceded 21.5

    David Clifford 8-53,Sean O'Shea 1-44 a total of 9-97 (124)  Kerry scores without those two 6-78 (96)

    Donegal played 10  won 9 lost 1  scored 13-229 (268)  and conceded 6-172 (190) average per game scored 27 and conceded  19

Michael Murphy top scorer with 0-44.  they have 3 of the top 5 scorers from play in the championship in Conor O'Donnell 3-21, Michael Langan 1-23 qnd Oisin Gallen 1-21.

Last years scoring averages before the final, showing this year with the new rules teams are scoring and conceding a lot more.

Armagh 19 points per game and conceded 14.

Galway 18 points per game and conceded 12.

The bookies and their punters had Galway to win by 1 point the opposite happened,  this time they think Kerry to win by 1 point,  to be right this time or the opposite to happen again?

Murphy not that important? their top scorer and should they win the final his return will have played a very important role from a side that lost the semi final last year. The average age for the 20 players that featured at the weekend was 28 not that youngish.

Be prepared to be amazed. Armagh have already won it last year which was more open of a championship than this year! we have entered a period where Sam will be shared around. Kerry have won 1 in the last ten years relentless? Tyrone might win one in the years ahead depending how they develop their U20 winners, It's a bigger step up than U21 use to be.

Dublin Quarter final exit the last two years is where they are at, lack of Leinster U20 success doesn't suggest they will come back stronger anytime soon.

Kerry will wear blue in the final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,432 ✭✭✭henke

Has that been comfirmed somewhere? I would imagine Donegal would also wear white in that case.

There alternate jersey is white and Kerry’s is blue so I would imagine if there is to be a change that both will change as typically happens in the All Ireland series.

These were the colours they wore when they met in 2012 too. In 2014 final and 2019 super 8s they both lined out in their home colours but those Donegal jerseys had more yellow than the current iteration so they may deem it a clash this time possibly.

According to the Examiner Donegal will be in white. Kerry blue.

    Hi all.

Genuine Donegal supporter looking fir one ticket for our clash with Kerry, in case any of you hear of a spare ticket.

Hoping the road back to the hills of Donegal won't be as long this year as it was after our loss to Kerry in 2014.

JImmy's winning matches for the county again! 😃💚💛
