    i see what you mean,

i understood from a friend who also got that free EV charger offer, you can pick any of the Energia smart tarriffs, so just check the most suitable for your own specific time usage requirements.

I spotted a great tariff on their website but wasn't allowed go on to it. Just a certain few allowed.

Theres also a 200 euro cancellation fee if you break the contract rather than the usual 50.

This was the energia offer in conjunction with Kia.

Same originally opted out. Took me about 12 months after my initial enquiry. I kinda lost track then had to remind them a few times in that 12 months.

Note after you get it installed there's a 30 day testing communication period by ESB during which I was refused switching by another supplier. Took them 2 months for ESB confirm it tested ok. I had to renew my contract before that unfortunately.

This was my experience. Probably quicker for others.

Probably depends if they are working your area. Said they were swamped.

To anyone who has signed up to the Flogas BWG smart plans, do you have a way of tracking your usage via the website? I know Energia have a nice app and BG who I'm with for another 6 days have everything on their website, it does make it easier especially when asking others to pay towards the bill.

I have that already setup and it's fine for what it does but the providers usage will be matched exactly to my plan and show money spent etc which is really what I'm looking for.

A simple spreadsheet containing your plan details & ESBN usage will do that for you.

Just bought 1st EV and installing home charger. I'm on 24 hour with Electric Ireland. Pre EV it looks like I use 400kWh every 2 months, sometimes going to 500 in December etc. Any advice welcome. Thank you

I suggest that you should move to a smart meter and then go for one of the smart meter contracts that offer a low EV charge rate for 2 to 4 hours in the early hours of the morning.

Those rates could easily be a quarter or a fifth of the rates that you are currently paying (and I don't know how much you are paying per kWh currently, of course).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,624 ✭✭✭forumdedum

Thanks for that. I am on a smart meter this past year though I haven't implemented it as such. I will check my bill and see what I'm paying per kWh.

1/4 or 1/5 would be quite a difference!

I know for me the EV is about 20% of my electric consumption. (Low mileage) So I'd get at best 10% cutting this in half, and that's if I charge 100% during that time. I know some times I'll get caught out and have to charge outside of that so it won't be 10%. I can include some things like washing machines, etc and some showers it will help, but not enough unless it's a 11pm-8am plan.

For someone doing more mileage the EV tariff might be better.

I've done some number crunching with the impending loss of my BG EV plan next week. I had whittled it down to three plans (Flogas BWG 24hr,Flogas BWG Day/Night and Energia AXA 34%). Using actual units consumed from my latest BG bill. Energia AXA 34% discount has been chosen, it actually would be cheaper overall than the BG EV plan I'm on now. Lower peak rates and standing charges make a big difference when doing your calculations.

I hope my work helps others.

i am with Energia, the dates of the bill, including the export period is listed in the top right hand corner, looks like this:

Yeah the dates are right but doesn't look like they included June export units

We are now a two EV house and I've a 10kw solar battery to top up. The EV rate with Energia beats everything else hands down. I'll be changing over in August.

give them a ring, i take my own readings every 2 months, and while the bills will never match up 100%, as different timings on readings taken, its always been accurate

Pinergy rate is actually lower at only 5.45 c inc vat, export is also 25% higher,@ 25 cent but i needed the 4 hour Energia window with 3 EV’s, heat pump + a 15kw battery to charge every night. It is manageable in the 4 hour window, but we have lowish annual EV mileage, and thankfully, no electric showers

436Kwh per month is my average before buying the EV

Make sure to have a look at the free Saturday or Sunday plan with Electric Ireland. I find it great ... do all my charging on Saturdays. Your standard rate for the other 6 days will be slightly higher but is also offset by everything you do on Saturday (or Sunday) being at zero rate.

All depends on your own situation - driving profile (Kms per week - will one charge cover you), car needs on your free day etc. Don't rule it out anyway, it's hard to beat a zero rate for the car which is likely to your biggest user.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,624 ✭✭✭forumdedum

Thanks for that. I drive 140km a day for 3 days of the week. A Sat/Sunday charge would cover 2 of those days, maybe 3 if colder weather etc doesn’t dent range too much.

Re: "Free" Saturday or Sunday…the very days you want to be able to use your car for pleasure purposes.

Nope I'm going to tie it up charging as I watch my washing machine go round and round 😐️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,892 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

You can use the overnight hours on those days for charging presumably?

I'd be more worried about the increased standard rates for the rest of the week.

The modellers on elec-tariffs or kilowatt.ie don't seem to take account of this kind of weekly pattern usage. They're all based on a daily model.

To be honest guys im not great at this, so here goes,

im on the DG1 24HR DF BAFF FIXED DUAL Account standard, 18 Month Contract, finishing next October 26,

My wife just purchased an EV car getting it next week, on the non Smart Meter and was told if you go smart meter you cant change back,

Do Flogas do an EV rate my other half is a Taxi Driver so will be used 5 days a week, id stay if i got a decent price with them , then some people say dont change , i presume i pay the €50 Termination , if stay with Gas only,

Any recommendations out there if we dont go Smart Meter , is it very more expensive staying on a 24 hr

    Any help really Appreciated

I just pulled by latest HDF file from ESB there now and have 4 months of data after installing a smart meter. Previously was on a 24hr plan with Energia. We have an EV and this is the estimated annual cost according to Energypal.

    Energia Smart Data 33% - €1831.62

    Energia Standard 24hr 33% - €2477.41

    Annual saving: €645.79

Note that besides charging the EV at night rate, we also use our dishwasher and washing machine usage after 11pm. But the EV is the single biggest factor in reducing our annual cost. Apart from these 3 items, our electricity consumption patterns have not changed. Takes very little effort for roughly 26% reduction in our electricity costs.

I too was unsure of whether we could achieve significant savings.

The smart meter needs a month of data before you can switch to a smart plan. So as soon as my smart meter was installed, we started shifting our usage as I described above so the data would match time of use rates.

Then after 1 month we had enough data to put into Energypal to have a reasonable estimation of what savings could be achieved. The answer was very clear - The results after 4 months are very similar to what our 1 months estimate was.

I initiated the switch the next day.

If you still unsure, do what we did and shift your EV charging until after 11pm and have it finish by 8am the next day for a month. Then plug your data file into Energypal.

Importantly, only select the data that falls into the date range that matches when you started shifting your time of use in order to compare results (i.e. Smart vs 24 Hr tariff). You can always come back to this thread if unsure how to do this.

It costs you nothing but time and a little change in behavior in order to make an informed decision. Even if it costs you €50 to switch, you will probably save that in less than a month.

    The numbers don't lie.

Never thought to shift the charging to change the esb data for estimation purposes, that's a great idea. Common sense I guess, on reflection.
