    Hi

    This Feels dumb but whatever,

I just wanted a goal to work towards in life and im very very stuck and confused with choosing a career I have college in 2 years and I simply don't know what I actually like my parents want me to take the medical route and become a doctor and kind of stapled in my head that any job that pays under 75k is worthless. I feel like I'd like a career in the military but no offence the Irish army doesn't exactly appeal to me I'd actually love to join as a army medic but I'd need about 6 years of study and 3 years of experience just to start of at 50k a year in the Defence forces which doesn't exactly appeal to me so I'm just wondering what opinions other people have

    Regards
    Godin

Happiness in work life is so important and not to be overlooked. Money is important and unfortunately makes the world go round, but the impact an unhappy work life can have on your life as a whole is massive. Also something that interests you means you will study and enjoy it more.

Your parents are only trying to look out for you, but it's your future not theirs.

Finally, in many cases your career will kind of fall into place based on many decisions you make in life. Post leaving cert is an important decision, but you'll find you'll make many more that will shape your career in lots of different directions. So start figuring out what interests you, what you enjoy, and the environment you'd like to work in ..... Then talk to people in it,

You could always split the difference: study medicine whilst a reserve medic, then later consider joining the PDF as a medical officer, or continue being an RDF member whilst working as a civvy.

In the end, neither your parents nor anyone on here will be living your life, so you have to focus on what's important to you. But your goals can change as you get older,so just try to keep some options open to you.

Have you spoken to the career guidance teacher in your school? They might be able to give you some suggestions. You could also make contact with the careers officer in whichever college you have in mind and ask about what directions medicine might take you. It's no harm to gather information for yourself this far out.

How do you come to that conclusion that any job that pays under 75k is worthless?

Have you the ability to get the points for medicine?

    And the stomach for it.

    If so then do it!
