Subbed for the year. Hoping the changes to CA won't allow the Orwell Road idiots to derail the thread about Russia's invasion of Ukraine to be derailed totally.

    Hi all,

A massive thank for everything posted here so far. It is great to have a proper insight into the thoughts and feelings of the community. Please keep posting.

A lot of users have already jumped and joined up the Subscription service. Thank you to everyone who has joined so far.

I wanted to point out one thing that may cause disruption for some. Please use the email associated with your Boards.ie account when ordering the subscription. The system will then automatically assign the "paid member" role to your account and you will see the benefits immediately. If anyone has any concerns or questions after completing the subscription please fell free to reach out to me by PM or email hello@boards.ie and we will get it rectified as quickly as we can.

    Thanks guys, Mike.

I think this is fair enough posting as an option and the main reason I subscribed here is the gesture to hands off moderation so the days of “may not go down too well posting here” are hopefully behind us, I will also add that it did cross my mind that others may not be in a position to subscribe but hopefully there’s enough of us that subscribe that others don’t have to, or maybe there’s an option for gift subs but there would have to be some benefits to subscription for the benefactor.

I guess we are at the stage where it’s ideas that will keep boards alive and it probably needs its own thread, but I usually spend some time in the crypto thread and if part of a subscription involved a purchase of bitcoin then it would be worth giving someone a gift sub which they would then own a percentage of a pool value, a nightmare to manage probably but an incentive to gift sub could help toward saving the site.

Why not try another advert.ie type venture. Or was a no compete written into the sale? Selltobuy.ie is available 🤔

For those who pay for 1 year Subscription, what happens if the money required is not met and the site decides to close down? Do people get refunds?

I'd doubt it. Subs would likely be back of the queue in terms of creditors.

I'd be annoyed if no refunds but Id be glad I at least tried to keep Boards going either way. Bargain forum has saved me 1000s of euro on purchases and Ive gotten help with countless things in other forums that also saved me money.

    Hi Mike

    I've just subscribed.

I've enjoyed Boards for over 20 years and like many others have benefited from it in many ways. For the many it may just be entertainment, and that's fine too. For some however, and I'm thinking of PI, Job Advice, Consumer Issues, the LGBT forum and the like, it's been a lot more important and very beneficial.

Maybe set-up an "open" donation option as well. I made a donation twenty years ago to help replace a creaking server and I've never regretted it. I'd have no problem making a donation now to help keep the show on the road. Boards is a worthwhile if quirky corner of the internet that plays an important role.

One other suggestion. I only became aware of this because someone linked to your original message in a forum I follow. You need to highlight it much more. Could you interject your message in every forum for a week ? Could you link to it from the subscription page - there is no mention of the urgency of the situation there !

Anyway, best of luck. Hope it works out.

The T&Cs are at the bottom of the page before you subscribe. No refunds based on this.

It seems Boards is becoming a bit of a clique in a matter of days. The paid member with a badge vs the member that has been here years but not in a position to sub right now who gets nothing for just being there throughout the years. I dislike these type of member status. That's imo.

I'm uncomfortable paying a sub to a site that gave very little support over many years, many questions, queries, complaints, who then cones on looking for money.

It seems very vague on what this money will be spent on, what salaries it's supporting, what bills need to be paid. Vague answers at best, nothing substantial, nothing clear.

There's a majority of members voicing their dissatisfaction with vanilla, from what I've read, has this been addressed ?

What are the plans with the subs received for the entire year, and the site goes belly up in a month, is it just tough?

    1. Put up a big announcement when you don't have the subscription page ready
    2. 30 pages of rancorous arguing
    3. Put the subscription page up and take the announcement down so no-one can find it.
    4. ???
    5. No profit

Seriously lads, you need to have "Save Boards!" plastered across the top of every page, and not just a link to this thread, a new standalone announcement. The subscription page has no mention of Boards financial issues or the urgency of the appeal.

Whatever momentum you have now, this is as good as it's going to get.

Even just change "Good news everybody" to "Save Boards! Subscribe now!" - half the people on the site probably have no idea what's going on.

Put your money where yer mouth is... Subscribe and Save Boards!

Hardly vague. The money will be spent to ensure the site keeps running. Nothing more.

Agreed. Prompt for subscription + reasons every 5 clicks for the next few weeks unless you've already subbed.

I saved enough over the past few months on the bargains thread to well pay for subs for the next decade. Latest was a smart watch worth £199.00 for €32.00 so quids in no matter what happens.

Can't imagine Vanilla would make that easy. If they didn't move to a non code solution they could spin up what custom injections they want very easy.

The way I'm looking at it (and I've paid the €50 this morning) is this….

I've been very vocal about the technical problems, the moderation concerns, the transparency and communication (or lack thereof!), the plan forward etc…. and all of these still hold true and I hope will be seriously reflected upon by @Boards.ie: Odhran and @Boards.ie: Mike (as well as the Admin and Mod team) over the coming days and weeks, and that this appeal and subscription model marks a fundamental shift in how the site operates going forward.

    BUT…..

I've also gotten a LOT back from my 24 years on this site - massive amounts of information, help/advice/suggestions, entertainment, and most importantly interaction with fellow users regardless of whether our views always aligned.

I'm not into Facebook, Twitter, Reddit or all the rest.. I prefer the "old style" forum format for my social media.

So my €50 is both a thank you for all of that, and an investment in the future - because without it, as has been clearly stated in Mike's OP, there IS no future for this site!

So I'm taking a leap of faith… will it be foolish? We'll see, but at least I have given it a chance.

Subbed for the year there. Again, like others, this seems like a small price for 20 odd years of content and support. I really hope this works out.

    It's as clear as mud.

There are no costings. No figures. Absolutely nothing.

If Boards owner/admin want people to sub their platform, then surely a thorough analysis of financial costs and where subs are intented to be spent should be disclosed.

I will say this is pretty poor. I'm on the desktop homepage and I have no idea that boards is in trouble or is launching a subscription. Sure alot of people use mobile but I'd say alot of office workers use desktop. The messaging is not clear.

    Hey there,

Thank you for your comment. As I said in the OP there are changes and improvements lined up for the coming days and weeks. These changes are focused on moving away from the heavier site customisations that are in constant conflict with the Vanilla platform. This clean up is aimed at improving site performance, functionality and user experience. So all good things to come to keep our community alive and kicking well into the future.

Thank you to everyone for your support, your time and you continued patience while we get to where we need to be.

    Cheers, Mike.

Sure. That would be great but whatever's possible right now get it out front. Something with more urgency / visibility needed.

We are working through the Vanilla dashboard to making this more visible on desktop. Thank you for highlighting.
