Well, if obvious trolling and spamming the forum aren't enforced, we'll know.

There already a post in CA (not by me)

"mods can we ban anecdotes again please so we don’t have to read this shite."

Thats the effect from one poster parodying the removal of the no anecdotes rule.

Wait until the actual trolls start flooding threads. And ignore only works if you and the people whose posts you do want to see ignore them also. Cos you still see their replies.

Any random newcomer who checks out a CA thread will see a troll fest.

It says a lot that a mod can't recognise obvious trolling.

That said, I chuckled at the trolls first attempt tbh.

Presumably he was asking for moderating to be applied evenly to both people he agreed and disagreed with. Which it wasn't.

If the mod team were serious about reform and weren't pulling a stunt they'd have resigned and/or added new moderators capable of modding the posters with the "correct" opinions

Does “barebones” moderation exclude banning blatantly obvious attempts to derail threads?

Who on the other side of the debate broke any rules?

    The usual carry on.

I find it hilarious to be honest. It’s the best entertainment I’ve gotten out of boards.ie in years.

The only way to deal with an attention-seeker determined to derail or bait others in a thread is to starve them of what they need most - attention!

I grant you, it's not always easy, especially if they quote you or post something so outlandish that others feel compelled to respond to/correct it, but it's the only real way to deal with it.

Bannings and sanctions just reward the behaviour and drive genuine posters away. We've already seen how that works out!

It always was. Neither pretending to be a victim nor posting conspiracy theories change this.

Well that only occurs if obvious *trolling is now allowed. Is it?

*I have to keep saying obvious trolling because it can be subjective and vindictive if applied incorrectly.

You might be references me. If not I apologise.

I am not trying to be "funny" More to demonstrate what no moderation looks like on this site without breaking site rules.

As I said earlier the decision to turn CA into 4chan is moronic.

I come here because of the good moderation not the lack of it so I can get balanced opinions and discussion.

    This.

Tbh it just strikes me as a user or two losing the plot now in that thread and trying to derail cause they are throwing their toys out of the pram.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 842 ✭✭✭Hungry Burger

”good moderation” ie posters who say things I don’t like get banned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,095 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

It can be a tactic they engage in so they will stop being challenged and are then free to flood the thread with the 'outlandish'. The being a dick tactics are a defence mechanism against posters engaging with them.

And that also drives genuine posters away too.

And also, it seems Boards has an audience of unregistered readers. Who see the ads I assume. But wont have an ignore list.

I enjoyed how @Boards.ie: Odhran pledged to answer questions in this thread, answered like 4, made some smart comments and wouldnt give any direct information and then just buggered off again.

    Sound.

I'm no victim. I've generally stopped posting in CA especially the hot button topic threads because moderation was applied unevenly. It's my own view that moderation had improved (substantially) but it had a habit of falling back into its old ways from time to time.

A major problem with the site though was that when there was an issue with moderation the wagons were effectively circled. There was also a time that you had one person that was effectively judge, jury and executioner and if you were appealing it was to him! Crazy stuff

With the relaxation of the over zealous lefty ideological moderation on here is this an admittance by just another company/website that once "you go woke you go broke"? Seems like it. Well done lads, big clap on killing a uniquely Irish website by subscribing to American culture wars. If you ever thought Ireland wouldn't be affected by the nonsense that has taken hold of the Western World, well then, here you have your answer…

I don't think anything needs to be engineered at all - a shtshow will ensue quite naturally, because that's what happens eventually, when you let people have at it hands off over contentious subjects on an anonymous Internet forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,874 ✭✭✭✭Ha Long Bay

    Not at all.

I want to hear other opinions once they are civil.

Myself and lot of other posters\viewers are not as fixed on views as you might be lead to believe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,095 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

In the declared rules for CA there was nothing in it prohibiting trolling. Or going completely off topic. Or dumping memes.

Is attack the post not the poster still a thing?

Back seat moderation or discussing moderation on thread?

It would be good to get clarity on whether there are general site rules still in force on CA and if so what they are.

I get the point you're making, but lowering yourself to the level of what you're concerned about isn't the answer either.

Just ignore the posts/posters that you fundamentally disagree with and post your own views constructively.

The spammers/attention-seekers will give up eventually if everyone stopped giving them oxygen.

But that was again, obvious trolling.

However, you've probably inadvertently raised a good point in that there's somewhat an idea on this thread now (which was about paying to save the knowledge base that is boards.ie) that the CA mods or some mods/admins are "pulling a stunt" to prove something or other.

Well, if trolling and spamming threads is allowed that'll be proof of some stupid stunt. I mean, every forum that's a given.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,231 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Indeed. Yes engineered in the way that if you stop imposing order, chaos will naturally ensue. And it's this chaos that's desired by the mod team to "demonstrate" how valuable they are.

You say you want all opinions, but you weren’t getting them. One side was being modded differently. That’s why people lost trust, not because of anecdotes, but because the same rule didn’t apply to everyone.

Ok, this thread has now turned into a mess so I'm unsubbing it.

The extent to which the site owners appear to be winging it doesn't inspire confidence that they'll spend any money raised wisely...

I think you might be overthinking how planned out this all is...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,231 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Possibly, but it has all the hallmarks of a flounce.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 842 ✭✭✭Hungry Burger

I find that hard to believe to be perfectly honest.

It’s been mentioned here ad nauseum how modding on this site has been one sided for a long, long time.

Within an hour of the moderation policy being changed, you threw all the toys out of the pram intending to go back to the status quo.

You should be genuinely banned for your behaviour, not someone who posts an opinion that is not “correct” by societal standards for 2025. There’s 3-4 posters who have been running rampant on that thread, including a moderator, who have been given a pass because they are on the “right side” of a particular discussion, whereas many a poster on the other side has been reprimanded for the most minor of transgressions. This had been going on for the last three years at least.

I suspect nothing will be done as usual. Not that I have a problem, I’ll move on with my life and will still post my opinions regardless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭archfi

Well obvious trolling and spamming threads is a given on most if not all forums with zero need to state it really.

All threads go off strict topic but usually go back on track.

Memes/users meme dumping can be ignored unless trolling/spamming

Attack the post not poster - That's covered by 'abusive' maybe.

Don't know about back seat/criticising moderation, I think that's sitewide but as there is simplified rules now there should be none of the critcising on thread.

Yeah, I agree a bit more clarity is required.

It might be a "I'll show YOU what happens" type thing as well, who knows.

    CA is basically twitter now.
