    Hey all,

With the announcement of possibly closing Boards (https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058419143/important-news/p1?new=1) we need to start looking for alternative sites or locations to use if the worst comes to worst.

Bargain alerts is one of the most popular parts of the site - does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on where we could go if Boards does shut? I'd hate to rely on Reddit, the lack of chronological messages does my head in. Maybe another forum? Maybe discord?

If mods could pin this or get the ball rolling with discussions, that'd be great!

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

We’re seen these threads emerge in many popular forums- I don’t think it would be good to scatter to the four winds -I’m wondering are a few boardsies already setting up an alternative site where we can assemble the rag tag forums like here, food, motors etc?

A facebook group probably or askaboutmoney ? Reddit is another option.

Facebook is a poor choice, and Reddit has been around for long enough that if it was to take over it would have, no?

Discord seems like a possible option - could you run Boards as a Discord server with individual channels for the various topics? (obviously not)

Definitely dislike reddit as others have said both here and on the Impending Doom thread

Facebook I wouldn't use and don't want to

Discord works well, is easy to use and customise, I'd definitely be in for that

Facebook groups work well but you need a cohort who aren't spamming constantly which a lot of groups descend into. Unfortunately I've tried some of the irish ones for bargains but often its people spamming terrible amazon tat with affiliate links. Life on a budget in Ireland is one of the better ones but its not really bargain alerts like boards.ie

Reddit drives me mad since half the forums require their app which I despise

Discord I've only dipped into once or twice so can't really comment.

I've spent a fair bit of time on Lemmy as an alternative to Reddit but again still not perfect

Are people mistaking Discord for Discourse?

i am in a few discords for various topics, i think most things could work on the app but i doubt people would bother

reddit comes in handy for the odd thing but i doubt people will move

boards changed loads over th years and lost most of the users and are left with a small percentage, i would miss bargain alerts for the big saving items and a few other niche areas i have an interest in like the watch forum

Would we better off just starting a free forum on phbb or whatever is the current in now? Tbh realistically we wouldn't more than 1,000 plus posters anyways

A discord server was set up for the Christmas forum years ago and it worked really well. Has come back to life this week

Would be good to have an agreement as to where are all going. Splinter groups won't work.

Still remember when hotukd started in Ireland and failed.

I don't mind setting up the forum and hosting it, it's trivial. But getting the users to follow is the issue

that sounds great, if it is user friendly im sure people will move over and if there is uncertainty we could always set up a vote

can't be doing with facebook that's for sure

BA forum hasn't been what it was for quite a while now. It used to be a very busy forum a few years ago.

On the options, I'd go for reddit. Discord is difficult to use in my opinion and FB can be full of spammers.

I think hkud failed when BA was very active and we didn't have a reason to go over to them

There's a great solar users group in FB with over 70k members and a lot from boards are mods on it. It's run tightly and no spammers /Shills allowed. It's a great group

Tbh I don't mind where we go as bargain alerts is frankly the only forum on here for me anymore.

Realistically what do we think most will bother with? I think a forum for the simple fact all the current users are happy use a forum. Would enough casuals bother with discord and the likes needing apps? Then Facebook a lot seem to not bother with it these days and I agree on the spam would it be easier keep the peace on a forum?

I'm not against Reddit for an "bargainalertsireland" it's a mouthful tho

I think it failed as even when BA was at its most active, it never would have enough content to keep a dedicated daily deals site busy*

Also, parcel motel was ubiquitous back then so most Irish bargain hunters probably used hukd more than BA - I certainly did 😁

*I know hukd isn't a daily deals site but it's effectively how it operates.

    I agree.

The forum gamers setup a site during the disastrous migration 3 years ago as a backup as boards was near the edge of oblivion then.

I see it's back up and looks like it could be a haven for the specialist forums or some of them anyway if they'd be inclined to accept some other forums?

The members appear to be nearly all boards members

Will we go with a sub Reddit for now just in case this place goes offline? At least we'll have somewhere easy to access and can always change it up down the line? Anyone here know much about creating sub Reddits? I'm a casual user so looked there but not sure on the nest settings? bargainalertsireland ?

    Something about sandwiches

If you're stuck, I have an old forum that I had years ago. It's not being used but it's still online. Not sure why I keep paying the bills on it but it's going unused. So if boards goes that way, feel free to work away. Site is www.dingostew.com

i can set it to point to your site

anyone know anything about freeforums.net, i just made this in 30 seconds

    https://boardsbargains.freeforums.net/

facebook and discord are grand for facebook and discord users, i wouldnt touch them

reddit its full of hate and ragebait, everytime i open it i am steared into some shocking article with loads of people raging and giving out, then further down people saying its a bot, its not true or it a karma farming repost
