Why would they get involved something thAt has nothing to do with them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,566 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

I fear the announcement has not had the desired effect.

The mood seems falatistic than optimistic.

People like myself have read it and thought well that's that, it's got one foot in the grave.

It was great while it lasted.

There is no value in throwing €50 at it if things are not going to improve, and things won't improve because it's just a victim of the changed world of the Internet.

It's not going back to what it was pre the update, the world has moved on.

    No way !

I on Chrome on Android phone and tablet can only search and sometimes get a user , member , or thread if I am lucky .I am not very good at tech though

Many complaints about it on the bug fixes help thread as well .

    Master of the Universe

334 posts / 12 pages of comments on this thread since 3pm yesterday, there's life in the old girl yet!

If you don't want to throw €50 at it in one go then €6 a month is really nothing. Can't even get a pint for that in any of the bars around town. For hours upon hours of conversation every single day it's a negligible amount.

If the site still goes the way of the dodo, losing the equivalent of a few pints is hardly a great loss.

They can be good but not anonymous.

Also plenty of shills looking to send business a certain way.

It’s a lousy deal though if you are on here for a small forum or two. This isn’t a business with any future; and it certainly isn’t a community like it was back in 2010. 100k+ to run a declining platform lacking core functionality with no user say when a small vbulletin forum costs less than €100 a year.

    I don’t see it man.

I did a small test there with your post and a basic boolean using Google Gemini.

    image.png image.png

Based on those token counts, and using that particular AI model, you could have probably 40,000 posts moderated for around one euro.

With more complex rules, maybe 25,000. It's feasible costwise but a technical challenge implementing it in existing forum software.

As someone who's been off the drink for the guts of 2 and a half years Boards has taken over a lot of the time I would've spent boozing and kept pint money in my pocket. Ive no problem paying a membership as long as functionality doesnt suffer.

For all their faults and foibles I'd still rather be moderated by actual human beings. Maybe I'm a luddite, but it seems a bit grim and dystopian to be moderated by AI.

And in terms of cost saving - sure the mods are already doing it for free!

This is the crux of it for me. There's lots of great ideas in this thread, now 12 pages long and no further contact from TPTB.

I just took a look and couldn't figure out how to subscribe or donate. If you actually want us to do this, then tell us how! And post updates like a Kickstarter would!

Will gladly pay the subscription mentioned in the OP.

Maybe its an age thing but I'm really not liking the way the world, and specifically the online world, is changing so rapidly with the onset of AI. I have spent many happy hours on this site in the past and would gladly pay with the hope that this could continue in the future.

I note that Askaboutmoney, which has a similar look and feel to Boards is running on XenForo which some posters have suggested as an alternative.

Is there anything to be said for another mass archiving the old site and starting again with a new platform, just with the more active forums being recreated and minimal customisations?

That's my take on it also, I will sub for a couple of months and see how things progress. But if their plan is to go back to stock Vanilla then let's hope that has improved a lot compared to what it was at the migration (someone said it's been 3 yrs already since that disaster?!). Also, if I was in Mike's shoes - I'd already have been looking for a job elsewhere before this thread was even started.

This thread was created less than 24 hours ago. It is showing great involvement and proving that there are still a lot of users posting and viewing content here and across the site. We are reviewing all of the fantastic feedback that we are seeing here. We are allowing this time as a chance for people to voice their opinions, and their concerns also. We are listening to our community.

We will have the link to subscriptions up soon. That will allow everyone to contribute or not contribute, whatever the case may be.

Please keep commenting, we are listening and we are learning. More updates and info to come.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,091 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

As well as listening, is there a plan to contribute from your points of view too?

Well, I see the anti-mod filter bubble is in full swing on this thread. 🙄

The forum I have used the most hasn't had any moderation at all in years, and it has still died the same slow and painless death as the site in general.

It's been a great 13 years for me, and I've made many real life friends, but it's over.

Lot of people who are long gone and read it on Reddit are just throwing their tuppence worth in or not as the case may be ! Would say it suits other fora to try to pull the plug on Boards. They have been predicting it's closure for years now at this stage .

But can you pm the bot and have a polite discussion in the hope of getting your ban overturned ? 😜

They aren’t going to share their business plan or their numbers or their obligations. As open and engaged as Cloud and DeVore used to be - they wouldn’t share that stuff either.

I don’t expect people would like some of the answers to the questions asked, also. Cash was invested into boards.ie as a business. This is not a charitable endeavour, it isn’t controlled by original founders with a passion for it and it needs to do more than survive. It needs to make money.

If anyone really thinks old style Internet Forums are good business propositions in 2025, well.

Moving back to a standard version of vanilla with no customisations will reduce costs, reduce bespoke issues, reduce support time. Migrating again to another platform would require planning, effort, technical resource. It would come at the risk of losing another large slice of an ever smaller pie of users, and no move is going to generate new sign ups en masse. Those days are gone.

Of course, moving back to standard vanilla will piss off some regular users - but they’ve probably weighed that up and the sums make sense.

Deleting history, culling posts, starting again reduces the “value” that was bought and paid for. Doesn’t seem likely to be an acceptable idea.

‘Turning over to the community’ won’t repay investors. It can always be sold for user data, etc as a final exit plan.

I understand the likes of @o1s1n saying just pay the €6 and see, and hope it keeps going. I think that’s a normal and understandable desire if you love the place and get utility from it. For some people, none of the above will matter. Let’s just put the head down and hope it can keep going. The remaining regular user base are clearly very resilient to bugs, oddities of vanilla, etc.

There are plenty of other threads and forums to voice concerns on moderation. This is not one of them.

As always if anyone has any concerns about a post or content posted hit the shiny flag button. Do not derail this thread.

We are gathering feedback from the community on the future of this site, not feedback on peoples opinions of site moderation.

Vanilla is pretty much dead in the water, if Boards is to survive the first thing to do would be change to a better software solution

    Releases — Vanilla Forums

the move to Vanilla was nothing short of the most disastrous thing to ever happen to the site. The current layout is too hard to navigate . Not to mention the two weeks the site was offline during the transition. As well as that you have the changed attitude of mods who are so terrified of a legal case being taken they shut down anything that poses any risk

I think it’s too late now, the change to Vanilla should never had happened. You don’t fix what’s not broken.

Is there much point in @Boards.ie: Mike contributing. There will be a core of posters going on the attack about whatever he posts. The thread woukd decent into a cesspit.

We have to as individuals make up our mind as to whether we want or need boards to survive. Some who contribute to one forum only think a samll chat room type is a solution to them. However most on here interact witha half a dozen plus forums regularly. Very few of these will join a half dozen chat rooms to contribute to each.

I will probably chance the 50 euro if it survives 8 months I have four free months. If not I can alway say to myself I tried anyway

I'd also be up for a potential back up site if things here don't go well. Who are the main forum providing services these days? For all the active users that are around now the basic forum would do. You'd realistically only carry over places like After Hours, Bargain Alerts etc

    Hell even a bargainalerts.ie would do 🤣
