Beck Evans seems to be good and a few people on here have used them to help with exporting cars. They sell their owns cars or you can give them details of a car in any dealership and they will go buy it for you without vat. They charge a fee, but it's usually less than paying the full vat price.

Like you said, I think it's hard to find a dealer that will know the process or entertain it, that's the main problem with the vat side of it. A vat qualifying car might make it easier and more dealers would be aware of it.

If you follow the conversation, I never said anything about MG specifically being manufactured in the UK. I just said that a vehicle or product manufactured in the UK has zero customs.

If you want to get into an details ask the actual guy that's looking to bring in the MG. 👍

I myself thought MG are Chinese these days.

They have been for 20 years which was why I was making the point that a customs free MG is a vintage or a unicorn. Given he’d specified EV, it’s a unicorn, a mythical creature.

👍 If I was going EV and looking to save on customs the Nissan Leaf would be my choice it was manufactured in the Sunderland plant in the UK. But not the latest version.

    Lads,

Has anyone recently done a VRT on a Northern Ireland car. I want to buy one privately, but I want to make sure I am requesting the right documentation from the seller.

So I'll be taking the full V5 showing Northern Ireland as the registration.

What else should I ask for? Service history isn't much from what he's told me.

You don’t need anything else. Just make a handwritten invoice

I am importing a BEV from the UK, do I also need the Certificate of Conformity? It's a post-2018 Nissan Leaf.

Looking at importing one of these next month (OH's daughter moving to London, won't need it anymore, OH wants it) Was bought in the north with NI reg, but used in UK this last 7 months.

Anyway, was trying to find out what VRT would be on it, and while the calculator does show Vauxhall Casada, it doesn't have that model, so how can I get an estimate of amt of VRT would be due? Cheers

If the address on the V5 logbook is a NI address there will be no VAT or customs. Only VRT. To calculate the VRT you need to find the Co2 emissions, convert to WLTP, find the appropriate VRT rate and multiply it by the current OMSP in Ireland. All of which is explained on Revenue website

Have the CO2 ok, the OMSP used by Revenue would be more difficult to find.. (£28K new it seems)

Just wondering if you contacted revenue would they give you an idea of the VRT before bringing it in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,346 ✭✭✭✭User1998

No, they wouldn’t. You have to present the car for a VRT appointment

Would it be mental to go after a Cat S? Anyone ever go through this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,346 ✭✭✭✭User1998

They’re fine just harder to sell or trade in when the time comes. You need to buy them at the right price.

It would be to keep for at least 5 years myself. Looking a merc c class w205 coupe. Resale alreayd tough but would be a 10 year purchase.

I wonder how Irish insurance treat it. Can they refuse to insure?

You might get asked for an engineers report if it was crashed in Ireland, but if its UK only then it wouldn’t be an issue. You should probably get an engineers report done regardless to make sure its been repaired correctly

Seems mad you have to buy the car before you find out how much you have to pay in VRT, what info will they get from seeing the car that they won't get from copy of the V5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,346 ✭✭✭✭User1998

None really. The details gets sent to Revenue and they research the car to get a current OMSP and then apply the VRT rate. It could definitely be done without actually presenting the car for VRT but they won’t do that unfortunately. It should be offered as a paid service at least since I imagine it can take a lot of time and resource particularly for more rare or exotic cars.

    Hi,

I have recently cleared customs and payed VAT and am now trying to vrt a vintage 400cc motorcycle (34 years old)

The veichile is a non runner on UK plates and hasn't been runing since 8/09/2015 it was imported by a van from NI to the state 08 september 2015 the last date of MOT.

    I plan on bringing it to the mechanic as soon as it is vrt'd, however;

I have a few questions in regards to this bike

    ● Is it to late to VRT(bought it on the 7th of JULY 2025)

●If so Is the VRT chargeable for late registration,

●What documents are needed to VRT this bike

●The bikes engine has been replaced and the engine number is NOT known on the V5C is this okay that this cant be filled in for the irish logbook

Never too late to pay VRT. Late penalties would be tiny on a motorbike. If V5 shows no engine number you just have to show them the engine number on the bike. Documents checklist is sent via email when you book your appointment

Classic car 1960s , bought in UK , brought to NI , stored there .  Early 2023 date V5 with NI address.  (UK MOT till late 2022, even though exempt)

Want to put original UK reg on retention prior to import down here, so as it's not lost. Will import once new UK/NI reg & V5 received .
On revenue site, ( from 2024  ) It states proof required that vehicle in PRIVATE ownership in NI  for a "reasonable period of time "Proof of vehicle in use in NI prior to purchase includes ;-NI V5 with date- MOT history in NI

Require some OR all proofs listed above it states!
    A few queries ;
Can same owner name be on NI V5 as who imports to ROI ? Or is it better that they're different ?
    What's a reasonable period of time ?( I have seen maybe 3 months + )
For simplicity I guess it's probably best to have the new UK/NI reg on the car for a suitable length of time.
I'm guessing with an MOT exempt car ,that the NI addressed V5 will suffice as proof.
Lots of knowledgeable people on here , has anyone got actual experience of the above ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,346 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Most recent guidance is that the V5 logbook needs to have been issued 3+ months ago to a private NI address, no other proof required

Thinking of importing a car from NI. 2021 reg first registered in NI. V5 says 0 previous keepers. It was owned by a leasing company. They are the only owner. I presume this can be brought down with no VAT ? Garage says so.

I spoke to an NI dealer yesterday who claimed that since January, they (the dealer) can import from GB and then sell to ROI customers who are only liable for VRT on the car. He claimed this was the result of the Windsor agreement and that he had sold many such cars to ROI customers.

That's good to know. I was reading the agreement just now and I don't see cars mentioned but lots about goods remaining in the UK/NI and not going to the EU. So does the V5 from NI requirement still apply ?
