I personally wouldn’t recommend the job test prep the tests were way harder and really stressed me out. In reality this test was a lot more doable and I just closed it and bit the bullet and stopped trying to practice. It was way too little time to get into the swing of practice so I just did them as I am and very glad they are out of the way

Critical reasoning was tricky. I ran out of time towards the end, calculator definitely needed. But all in all good tests I thought.

I definitely quit the numerical analysis practices after they got too obsessed with currency rates and profit and loss sheet analysis but I did find the charts and graphs prep good for getting my head into the right place in fairness!

Some of those job simulation ones were tricky to know what they were looking for! For a few of them I was like "where is the option to say I would gather more information and then decide"

Yup! There were also a couple where an obvious solution or course of action wasn't one of the options at all.

    bit of a rant….

These competitions are so time consuming and completely detached from the realities of the roles they are attempting to fill. The situational tests especially seem more about measuring idealised behaviour than assessing real world competencies. Honestly, I find myself thinking, what would my manager not do, when attempting to answer the question of what one should do. These tests are also so subjective, it seems like the middle of the road answers (slightly appropriate/ appropriate/ slightly inappropriate/ inappropriate) could go either way depending on way the wind blows! Instead of identifying candidates with practical skills and sound judgment, the process seems to favour those who are simply good at navigating abstract assessments. For a system meant to recruit capable public servants, it is incredibly convoluted.

I agree to a large extent. I presume there is a bank of questions and we get a random assortment each, though, as a good few of mine were definitely "Highly inappropriate or inappropriate" or the opposite. But there were some where even though I was putting down "inappropriate" I was also thinking to myself "And even while I'm picking that option for this test, in the real world…"

I'm more annoyed with the analysis ones, to be honest. I had two text ones (fair enough) and the rest were graphs. The text ones I thought were reasonable for the most part. Except that whether an answer was "that's not in the text - cannot say", or, like one of the example ones, "The answer is true because (you should infer that there is a relationship between these two things)" - I think is really open to interpretation. And my own work style when presented with something ambiguous? A mail, or a call, going "Please clarify…"

The graphs, though? I call bullshit! Completely unrelated to the real world roles, and even if they were, it isn't a PO who is going to be doing the analysis, and certainly not under that sort of time pressure. Some of them, too, I felt were nearly trick questions that ended up costing me time.

Anyway - we've taken the jump over that particular hurdle, let's see where we land!

There was one particular question for one of the graphs where I genuinely believe the answer as presented mathematically speaking, is false, but I am 99% sure the 'correct' answer will be cannot say.

Ok, the message I just received from Public Jobs turns out to be just a general reminder of the deadline, and not a "you passed/failed/didn't do the room scan properly so we're kicking you out" message!

    🤨

Thankfully those are out of the way. Want to say I found them easy enough but the scoring may say otherwise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Perzival

Yeah I actually found those to be easier than the AP competition. My scoring could prove me wrong, but I actually finished the critical analysis test this time around, but didn’t in the AP.

    Ugh- I made a mistake!

Anyone know when the results are due?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

No, but not today, anyway. Deadline is 5pm today, isn't it? I can't remember if they mentioned a pass mark, or not. I guess the pass mark might well be "whatever scores bring the number of people passing down to [manageable number of application forms to read and shortlist]", they plug that in, and results should be queued and mailed shortly thereafter. I'm going to guess and say we'll have them by Monday.

there was also a mistake in the test material - the graph had number of households using that fuel NOT amount of fuel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭PhoenixParker

I'd expect it to take about 3 weeks. That's the usual timescale.

Friday 1st August is where my money is.

That'd put the first tranche of interviews in early September.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

Did that not just give rise to a "Cannot say" answer? But yeah, that may be why I felt one or more of the questions felt like trick questions.

the answer was cannot say but the explanation was wrong - doesn't fill one with confidence that they will mark this correctly - that said I found the questions v straightforward

I'm wondering if they used a bank of scenarios, or did we all get the same? Without revealing anything about the scenarios, my first and last ones were text only, the middle ones were all graphs/tables.

Agreed, though - I usually do reasonably ok on these ones, time-wise, and get the vast majority done, but I got all of these done this time around. I'm puzzled why they gave us an extra 15 minutes for the job sim one, to be honest - I had that done with loads of time to spare. I'd have much preferred the extra time for the analysis ones!

First test since I took AP comp in about 2017 and like some others said, I finished feeling pretty good about how they went but know that might not be what the results say. Also had way too much time for job simulation. Line between levels of appropriateness can be very fine. Would have assumed results will take a couple of weeks but maybe PAS have a speedier system in place. I know they have to find a way to cull applicants but really think these tests are not the way to do it, too crude, but I don't have a better solution. Shortlisting based on forms seems to be too large a task. Anyway, good luck all.

I thought the SJT part was calibrated well towards PO level, this ups the game on AP level scenarios. However, some depts allow more initiative to staff than others, so the correct answer might differ considerably. The other exercise is more objective and you know (with reasonable confidence) on your answers...yet time was limited.

It is so difficult to say with the job simulation ones which were correct. I honestly don’t know how anyone can say they did well in that part - it’s so subjective. There were so many short answers which I wasn’t expecting and that threw me off. I finished well ahead of time and went through all answers again and got as far as scenario 8 on the second glance. Even though people say to go with your first guess, I do think the second glance really helped.

Good luck to everyone and hopefully it doesn’t take too long to hear back. I can’t see how it would if it’s all automated but nothing surprises me when it comes to length of time it takes civil service to do anything.

”For the PO 2025 competition, candidates will be ranked on the outcome of their Stage 1
online assessments. Candidates will be progressed to the shortlisting stage and will be shortlisted in accordance with their ranking. At shortlisting, applications will be assessed against a scored criteria, and a further rank order will be created. The number to be invited forward at each stage will be determined from time to time by publicjobs.”

    - shortlisting is due to take place in August according to the booklet, but not sure if or when the ranking of stage 1 assessments happens.

I was reviewing the timeline from the 2022 competition

Testing results came out 22 days after the testing deadline (so just about 3 weeks). Shortlisting results came out 16 days after the test results. My best guess would be shortlisting results to be provided around August 15th. Fingers crossed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭Awkwardstroke

For August Interviews, you would need to give enough time for candidates (especially with physical interviews). Therefore my guess is results out before the end of July.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭PhoenixParker

    They said shortlisting in August.

    It'll be results 1st August.

Shortlisting for the first ~150 around 21st August.

Invites to interviews early September. Interviews last week in September.

1st August is a BH Friday. That's usually a good bet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭PhoenixParker

I've seen a lot of competitions play out over the years & I read the booklet.

The booklet says shortlisting in August.

Results of each stage usually take about 3 weeks to come out then there's about a weeks lag and they move to the next round. There's usually a 2-3 week notice period of each stage.

Friday of a bank holiday weekend, 3 weeks after the tests close is very likely results day.

Shortlisting will take about 3 weeks during August. They won't do many because it's time consuming and the first batch of interviews is usually small.

Interviews you generally get 2-3 weeks notice of the time and date. The first batch usually knows they'll have an interview for about a week before they get a time and date.

Current panel expired end of August so they'll want some people on a new panel before long.

Yep, it's looking like the Friday of the BH alright. I wonder how many sat the tests?

    Hi!

Colleague asked me what questions we were given in the Critical Analysis rest.

I remember the comprehension test, bar chart on UK v. Ireland male v. female, table I think was on GDP.

What were the other two tests?!😃
