Yeah. I've have a few people looking around it when parked and asked questions. They all know what it is and have the same story that either they or their parents had a Renault 5 back in the day. Seems to pull at their heart strings.

I've also noticed people on the N7 and M50 having a good look. I had someone follow me for a bit yesterday. Whenever I changed to any of the 3 lanes they did likewise and wouldn't overtake.

It really does feel Renault had their best people designing this car for style and handling.

They knew they achieved something special with this car.

Yep I think thats me too with the nostalgia, my mother had one when I was growing up, a red one.

My father also had a few Renault 4 vans because he worked with Telecom Eireann. Heap of sh**e he said!! I remember them well. They were everywhere at one stage.

Would you believe I had a tailgater sit behind me too, I was in left hand lane of N7 doing about 100 and he sat behind me for a long time, went l.past eventually.

The car is back now after being out for the evening, 223kms on the clock and 125kms range remaining, 14.2kwh/100kms so range is pretty decent it'll be in around a 300km car between charges in summer, let's see how the heat pump works in the winter for keeping range decent.

Spotted a 252 MH Green one on the M3 yesterday. Looks great, first one i've seen on the road. Any of you folks?

It was a very popular family car in the 1980's, I remember you could fit 4 kids back seat and another 4 or 5 in the boot, the good o'l days.

I wonder is internal space more than the 80's model ? Man, if they sold a new one today exactly as the 80's model I'd buy one tomorrow. The interior is just so far from the original it's a real shame.

I'd say it has to be far bigger than the original inside. The originals were fairly cramped but we didn't care.

Surprised folks here are saying it's cramped in rear most reviews ive watched say it's 'ok' and usable. Not roomy by anymeans but serviceable for 3 adults.

It's not suitable for 4 adults of average male height. Im 5'11 and there is nobody going behind me in this car. Ever.

Possibly 3 if the front passenger doesn't have to have the seat way back.

Maybe some people same height as me sit much further forward but id say i sit about normal. Theres no space for feet either if seats are down lowest, which is where I have them. I dont think I'll ever have to carry more than one passenger though, and if I do, I'll use my bigger car for that.

Before this was even on my radar a friend of mine was interested and went for a look in Dundrum but he said no because hed have the kids behind him a lot and they wouldn't fit. Hes about an inch taller than me. He was gutted as he really loved it and said hed order one in a heartbeat if it worked for him.

Behind a 5'4 person you would get another 5'4 person but even then the seat would have to be raised up a bit, which at 5'4 isn't a problem I suppose.

Hard to know, yeah the original was cramped but I only remember it as a kit and teenager so it didn't appear cramped to me then probably because It just wasn't on my mind.

My Aunt had one , got it new in 1981, think it was 45 Hp, when it was no longer of use I had great fun in 1995 driving it around the field before it was taken away to be scrapped.

We got along fine with the BMW i3, family of 4, had it got proper rear doors I would have kept it. So I'm sure the 5 would be fine, the problem is at times the boot was a bit on the small size but we no longer need buggies and all that so might not be so bad, I really rather a hatch than big heavy crap handling SUV especially around town.

The 5 in Green and Navy are real nice colours. My Aunt had a navy 5.

This was the colour 5 my Aunt had, looking at the old vs new It looks like the new one is more cramped but could be just the newer design.

The old one 3.5m long i believe, new one is 3.9

It's obviously wider too, it feels wide enough no problems there

Was just watching this one last week. He's 6,2 afaik. 3:07 and 4:07. Seems fairly practical outside of boot space. Would seem to make a good case for 2nd car for 2kids . Obviously not the main family car.

I'll get a pic of back seats in my driving position. Some of them must be told not to slate the back seats too much

Edit: in defence of the little R5 if I adjust my driving position by raising the seat, which isn't too bad feeling to be honest, there's a bit of space in the back and I fit, just about. Not really comfortable and I wouldn't want to do a long journey, but for 2 shorter people absolutely perfect.

1st pic, tavascan back seats in my driving position, 4.6m long mid size SUV, huge space

    1000058391.jpg 1000058397.jpg

2nd pic, R5 back seats in a slightly uncomfortable driving position for me

Id say just try with your family members or friends you will carry in the car before buying. But its not as bad as I made out earlier!

It was common enough to be practically knocking shoulders with your front seat passenger in many 70s and 80s cars.

Cars are wider now but most of us are wider now too 😮

Going down the nostalgia route, it'd be great if SAIC / MG produced an electric Metro for the 21st century 😄 like the original R5, a design classic imho, one of those cars that just looks right and like nothing else.

    image.png

PS - the midnight blue R5 looks better in the metal than I expected (of course a sunny day makes any car look nicer…) I still think the yellow one is the one to have though…

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Yeah the nostalgia thing is interesting and they seem to be popular. Im a big fan anyway.

Obviously I've just bought R5, Im constantly trying to find a fit for an employee and buy a VW ID Buzz in work. Im pretty close to convincing my best friend in work that an ioniq 5 would be just as suitable for her and her 2 kids as any SUV out there. I know ioniq 5 isn't a based on any car from the past in Hyundais range but it does have retro styling and reminds me of the Lancia Delta Integrale from a bygone era.

Fiat 500/600 and mini not my cup of tea but I do appreciate them, when the mini launched in early 2000s and I saw the Italian job remake movie I did briefly want one though!

I don't know about that, my old i3 was the main family car for family of 4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,795 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

It's funny because retro motorcycles look almost exactly like their originals and they sell extremely well, if they didn't actually look original no one would buy them. Think Meguro S1, Kawasaki W800 etc, I don't know why they can't make proper looking retro cars inside and out even with modern safety standards. All these motorbikes still have ABS and fuel injection, that's pretty much it.

Jaysus, an Ioniq 5 is nothing like a Lancia Delta cooking model never mind a Turbo HF Integrale!

Haven't seen an i3 on the road in ages, not all that many sold but the few that were seem to all have disappeared.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

I can’t express how gorgeous the metallic pop yellow looks.

    IMG_6693.jpeg IMG_6692.jpeg IMG_6689.jpeg IMG_6690.jpeg

    Some initial thoughts.

It’s a lot of fun to drive. I’ve the 150 HP 52 kWh Techno trim and it has plenty of power for me.

The Renault App wasn’t working for me, but a factory reset of the head unit solved everything.

The wireless charger seems a bit weak, I may end us using USB C.

This video makes out that the autoparking hardly works at all. Anyone here used it? How is their experience?

Spotted my first 5 today. A midnight blue model in Cobh, Cork. Might go look at one in the main dealer tomorrow.

I’m liking this interior a lot more than the one in the Iconic model I test drove. Having three voice assistants (Siri/Google/Reno) at your beck and call is kinda hilarious.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

My favourite colour combo for this car- I saw one the other day driving in opposite direction and nearly went into a ditch whilst I followed it with my eyes😀

I can’t see these cars rapidly depreciating - especially this two tone- It will certainly be the one of the best held secondhand values around

The pop is class isn't it? I love it on the green too. Yellow suits the car so well. Hopefully see a good few out and about over next few weeks.

Power is definitely enough, car feels quick and nimble.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,587 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Apparently yellow cars hold their value better because it’s a rare and potentially desirable colour, and this is a desirable car.

They told me today it’s their top selling car, so should be seeing more and more in the coming weeks.

I hate the yellow because I'll never be 100% sure with green I picked the right colour 😆

That would be fairly odd because Renault have been doing auto parking for absolute years ! Its nothing new to there arsenal of functions.
