Horrific events happening right now in Texas. 23 girls are missing from a Christian camp. As others have said, the NWS has been decimated over the last 6 months with DOGE and other Trump cuts. And aside from that, his famous Bill passed this week once again rolled.back environmental protections and promoted the use of oil and coal, acts directly linked to more extreme weather events.

Every action by Trump in the last 9 years has been so demonstrably bad for American society, and the wider world. He is deserving of all the hate that is faced his way.

But if their parents were illegals initially and eventually became US citizens WHAT THEN????????? Does Trump envisage a cut off point?

How possible is it/was it for an illegal alien to become a citizen?

I had the exact same thought today as well. Seems very little reference to it, and it seems like a perfect analogy that could be used when he goes on one of his rants. Who knows, maybe he feels if he talks about it, it may give someone the idea for them to try it.

Well here comes the next drama bomb to dominate the news for a while…

July 5 (Reuters) - A day after asking his followers on X whether a new U.S. political party should be created, Elon Musk said on Saturday that the "America Party is formed.""By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!" he said in a post on X."Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."

Obviously don't see him having any impact beyond siphoning away republican votes if it's still around come 2026 elections…

Lol, good luck with that! Keep him out of mischief for a bit. And stretch Trump's vocabulary of insults.

The problem is a lot of opinion, and they are absolutely allowed to have their opinion, overwhelming practical fact. The article itself observes that there is a difference between what they think should be policy, and what is actually legal in practice, but a lot of the distinction is being lost between the two. Soldiers follow orders unless they are unlawful, which itself leads to the problem in the subtitle of the article. They want soldiers to have the “right” to refuse unlawful or immoral orders. The problem here is that they not only have a right, but a duty to refuse unlawful orders, so they are advocating for no change there, and what is “immoral” is extremely subjective and in effect comes down to agreeing with matters of policy. Not something soldiers on duty should be making decisions about.

There is also an important error in the article: “Yet if they do carry out unlawful orders, the fact that they were ‘just following orders’ is no defense in a criminal trial” is directly contradicted by the Manual for Courts Martial which says it is. If there is any doubt at all as to whether an order is lawful or not, then the soldier is expected to follow it and is protected if (s)he does, and not if (s)he doesn’t and guessed wrong. The military cannot realistically function any other way.

Great. Another party led by a complete prick.

    Just what America needs.

The only positive I could see is that it might dilute the right-wing vote, assuming that there are fair elections in the first place, which is looking less likely.

I thought Elon isn't eligible to be President? So what's the point in him forming a party?!

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,753 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

if you read the article you would see some of those protesting are veterans not active duty personnel

But in Trumps worldview and opinion veterans are losers and are lower in status than **** stuck to the bottom of a boot

Draw down on Trump supporters, have an alternative for U.S. industrialists to rally behind (closed-doors) & PAC-fund and thirdly irritate the **** out of Trump and his followers.

Who does Elon envisage will follow his party?

All he did was turbo charge the Trump base.

Next year is going to be very bad for Americans who are not rich Medicare Medicaid cuts will go into force Many local hospitals will close down as the no of patients the can treat falls

Company's are now saying do not take on ant ne worker unless the job cannot be done by AI bots all workers in offices who use computers writers editors techies are at risk of been ng replaced by AI in the last year theres been a 30 percent fall in entry level office jobs vacanys in the UK probably due to companys using ai to process data or replacing old jobs with ai

Rfk is doing his best to cast doubt on the safety of vaccines even if it purs Americans are risk of measles and other diseases

Trump does not even know that shylock is uses a an antisemitic insult trump has hit the dollar so it's no longer the default currency for international traders he has pushed up debt by 4, trillion he seems to be on a quest to destroy the American economy and encourage people to buy digital currencys

Increasing us national debt plus weak dollars is formula for financial chaos all rich people will pay less tax so that sounds good of course by the time theres million of job loss,s caused by AI he ,ll be retired The democrats will have to try band clean up his mess

TBH, I doubt Musk can face up to Trump. Few people think he's the genius he's been cosplaying anymore and the RW voters have the Republican party. The time for starting a party was years ago, before everyone knew he was a POS.

If I'm quoting a part of the article, I think it can be fairly assumed that I read it.

As former service members they are perfectly entitled to opine or advocate on the matter of the utilisation of miltary forces domestically as a matter of policy. However, they are also advocating as to the behavior of those forces once ordered to deploy, which is behavior current service members have much less discretion over.

Yea let’s sneer and not listen to traitors who might be talking from experience about being treated like dirt

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,712 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

Who's sneering? I'm pointing out that some of what they are advocating for is practical, and some is not. Perhaps you could address the practicalities of the issue (you know, things like regulations vs policy, and the needs of the service) instead of making character assessments? I mean, has a single person on here other than you referred to them as traitors, and how does it help frame the discussion anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,348 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Pardon me for asking, are you equating disgruntled former service personnel making comments about being treated like dirt with being traitors or are you using sarcasm to make a point? When the common soldiery (former or serving) are not griping is the time for officers to get worried.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,753 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

Using sarcasm to make point about the deplorable treatment of veterans by the cult of Trump

Does anyone remember when Trump said they would be reopening Alcatraz?

It was pointed out how costly and impractical it was.

Obviously he got the point as that is the reason did is being nicknamed alligator Alcatraz.

It's yet another failed idea dressed up as delivering what he promised

I looked at a video about Alligator Alcatraz and the responses in the comments were almost all pro-Trump, being very enthusiastic about the project and making very racist and negative comments about immigrants and their round-up.

Some were just ignorant and violent, but some were saying 'this is just a temporary place, they will not be there long' and 'their cases will be heard at immigration courts within the camp' and 'its all new FEMA stuff, if its good enough for people who have been made homeless by disasters, its good enough for them'. Which on the face of it is reasonable enough.

None of them addressed the fact that, going on ICE figures, over 75% of the people arrested by ICE had no criminal background, other than traffic or immigration offences. Or that farming, hospitality etc are going to be badly affected by the lack of employees to do the jobs that Americans don't want. Or that people who are not illegal immigrants - born on American soil, or having legal permits to be in the country, or are legitimately pursuing permission to stay - are also being rounded up.

Some of those replies could have been bots, but Trump and others of the leadership are actively promoting this negative attitude. Its creating a very raw, ignorant, boorish element of the population, the kind of people who are entertained by the AA merchandise. While maybe not as aggressive, the same attitude can be found here and in other countries where immigration is happening.

Politico has an article about deportations https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/12/29/mass-deportation-immigration-history-00195729

And this newspaper report from 1855 shows this is not a new situation, putting the lie to the Statue of Liberty quote even then.

Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
