It depends on whether it would be cheaper for them if they switched. EI do a smart 24 hr plan with 30% discount. Unit rates incl VAT 23.82 & standing charge €250.77 urban, €314.98 rural.

If they have the smart meter for 12 months or more they could register with esbnetworks.ie & download their data file. This file can be uploaded to bonkers.ie or energypal.ie to find the best plan based on their usage.

You can download data from ESB after 1 month, not 12 months

Bonkers requires 12 months of data, energypal accepts any amount (i.e. 1 month or more).

I was onto Flogas about the bwg deal.

I asked about length of duration. It runs from April 2025 to Sept 26 so there's not quiet the 18 months left

Also asked about the confusion on the t&C's over the tarriff and SC varying. She confirmed it's bwg who set the t&c but that the plan is fixed regarding the tariff. Standing charge can vary.

I renewed over the phone as based on my usage while not the cheapest, there wasn't much in it and it's fixed for the next 15 months. No doubt rates will increase as they always do

    Tarriff

    D 26 49

    N 13.55

    SC 313.89

    Fit 18.5

I would say this Electric Ireland - Home Electric+ Saver 30% flat rate plan is best available on market right now

It's that time of year again, time to renew! I'm currently with Energia 37% Day/Night for Electricity (26.3c Day and 12.6c Night incl Vat) and Airtricity Home Gas 20% (9.1c incl Vat).

I've looked at Switcher, and it's telling me that I could save over €800 for electricity by going with Bord Gais New Elec 32%, but the rates look slightly higher to my current rates. Is the Switcher website basing its calculations on my standard rates from Energia, not on the discounted 37% rates?

I currently have a Smart meter, but have not been on a Smart Plan yet. The last time I looked into renewing it was felt that you shouldn't sign up to a Smart Plan, as then you would be stuck on Smart plans from then on (or something like that!). Has that general concensus changed?

Also, I have an EV and charge that at night, so are there any EV friendly plans I should be aware of?

And finally, is Fixed a better option at the moment (like the BWG offer for example). Should we assume prices will always inevitably go up? :)

    Thanks!

For first query, Bonkers lets you enter specific supplier discounts if the particular one you're on isn't listed. All other queries seem to have been addressed on the last few pages of this thread

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭Gooser14

If you haven't done so already I'd suggest you register your account with esbnetworks.ie. This will enable you to download you usage data file & this can be uploaded to energypal.ie or bonkers.ie to establish the best plan for your usage.

Like you, I was on the Energia day/night 37% discount plan but recently changed to their Smart Data 33% discount plan. I had to activate my meter for this plan.

    Discounted prices, incl vat:

    Day 25.21c

    Peak: 26.42c

    Night: 13.49c

    SC (rural) €300. 91 pa

I don't have an EV so there might be better plans for your needs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭jasonb

Yeah, even though I am entering the Energia 37% tariff name, it really looks like it's comparing prices with the non-discounted Energia rates. Which also means it looks like my current Energia plan is at least as good as I can find out there, with not too many savings to be made. The Aritricity Gas Plan does look like it can be improved on.

I'm not sure about the Smart Plan stuff, people seem to be less worried about switching to one, but it still means you can never switch back. As for the EV plans, they all seem to be for about 4 hours at night only, and I don't think I would save enough on the EV rates to make up for the higher rates during the other 20 hours. But I'll keep running the sums and see!

Thanks for that. I have a smart meter, but I'm on a non smart D/N plan. If I register with esbnetworks.ie, does that "activate" my smart meter? It's something I may end up doing anyhow, if I choose a smart plan, but I just want to see if registering to get the data activates it?

Just tried Bonkers.ie instead of Switcher, and it is telling me what I suspected, my current electricity rates are basically better than anything out there. Definitely money to be saved on Gas, but nothing on Electricity that I can see. So I am probably gonna take a hit on changing Electricity, but make up for it by changing the Gas.

no it doesn’t activate the meter, check energy pal when you have your data file

    The internet isn’t for everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭Gooser14

Registering with esbnetworks does not activate the meter. When I spoke to energia they were not prepared to offer a non smart plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭jasonb

Thanks a lot… I tried registering with them and it said it can't link my MPRN, so it looks like I will have to ring them (and I'm assuming Monday is the earliest I can do that!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭Escapees

Make sure you are entering the full account name exactly as it is on your current provider's bill (especially for the case of a joint account) and the same for your contact number...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭jasonb

Yeah, it's the same name (it's just my name) and the same mobile number. I've tried adding "Mr" as that appears on the bill, but no difference. I will give them a ring on Monday and see what they say.

Switcher and bonkers both did nothing for me last week, so i went to the supplier manually and got the switch email 2 minutes later.

    weird?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭jasonb

A quick update… I rang ESB Networks and they had me sorted in minutes (they didn't have a record of my Mobile number apparently). However, I only have a a Smart Meter since October, so I don't have the year's data that Bonkers needs. Energy Pal was happy to accept the file though, and they have suggested Energia Smart Data & 33% discount. All of the plans recommended are Smart Plans, that might just be because it's a Smart Meter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,654 ✭✭✭bren2001

If you have an activated smart meter, you're only eligible for smart tariffs. Some smart tariffs are 24 hour, or D/N and mimic non-smart tariffs. However, they're still considered smart tariffs (or smart plans).

If you're not activated, you're eligible for both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭jasonb

Yeah, I'm not activated yet, but have a D/N Smart Meter. Obviously if I go with the Smart Plan then that will be that going forward. Just gonna compare the "Energia Smart Data & 33% discount" with the BWG and Axa offers that have been mentioned here to see how they stack up.

Edit: A quick check shows the BWG one isn't quite as good, but the Energia Axa 33% is almost the exact same as the "Energia Smart Data & 33% discount" (as you'd expect, it's the same 33%), with only .01c in a difference in the tariffs, but the Dual version of the Axa 33% comes with the cheapest Gas price I've seen (7.66c) so I think I'll go with that. It will be nice to have both Gas & Electricity with the same supplier again.

Does anyone know if there's an issue switching to the Energia 33% plan if you're already a customer with them? I clicked on "Switch Now" and when I entered the MPRN it said I had to ring them, does that mean they'll check my link with AXA?

    Thanks!

Best price on electricity. It is time to switch from flogas.

Bill came in this morning and I'm paying 64 cent a unit

    Not on a smart plan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,686 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

use one of the switching companies and energypal and see what they advise, there isn’t a one size fits all

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Once you switch, you can't switch back.

Smart meter likely the way to go with an EV. The following thread likely more suitable for you:

Well, I can't get the "Energia Smart Data & 33% discount" as I'm an existing customer. The best they can offer me is a 30% plan. But I can get slightly cheaper offer with Electric Ireland "Home Electric +SST Saver 30%" and that's also a dual fuel plan with a decent Gas price, so that's what I am going with. It's frustrating putting in all this work just to get less of a price increase, never mind a saving, but there's nothing close to my current 37% discount on Electricity

Thanks for all the advice here as usual. I was gonna say see you all again next year, but it looks likely that there won't be a boards.ie by then!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭Gooser14

That's strange. I was an existing customer (non-activated) smart meter & they allowed me to switch to the Smart Data 33% (activated meter).

I think the Flogas BWG 24hr smart plan is cheaper 23.44c with 237 standing charge.
