It’s definitely worth getting travel insurance as well as the EHIC, I wouldn’t travel without it TBH.

Regarding the EHIC, I can’t say for sure for France, but a couple of years ago we were in Spain and my husband got sick and had to go to the Urgent Care - not quite A&E but a step up from GP. Of course he hadn’t brought his EHIC with him, so I rang the EHIC office to see what to do. Turns out his card had expired the year before 🙄 When I explained the situation, they were able to sort out the renewal over the phone and then send a fax confirmation letter to say he had cover. The real challenge was finding someone with a fax machine, but luckily the rental agency we got the holiday house from was able to receive it at their office and we collected it there. Rocked up at urgent care with the fax and his passport and he got treatment and medication and didn’t have to pay a penny.

Hey all. Just in lux airport waiting to fly home. I'm just relaying how cheap and easy it was getting to the Alsace/Lorraine region from lux airport. The 4 of us got flights with 10kg carry on each and priority plus a checked bag in the hold for €520 Ryanair. Got a car thru keddy who are Europcar for 10 days ,vw passatt estate automatic for €370. €890 all in. It's a great airport to use and our yelloh site was only 2hrs20 drive.Flights in June seem to be really cheap if anyone is looking to 2026.. anyway who ever is heading to france soon have a great holiday.. bon voyage..

we are on board IF at the moment. We rocked up at 2 on the dot and straight on the ship and up to clubclass. Usually we'd be waiting around for ages.

On Brittany Ferries at the moment. Booked the commadore suite and priority disembarkation.

Not sure I'll be able to travel common class again 😂

Kids are 3 and 5, which are probably the perfect ages to benefit from these extras.

We're going next week. Always took the Deluxe until kids were older (didn't like them v balcony) and now taking the Commadore with a good few years now. I love a quiet coffee in the lounge there. We've a dog too so have a dog friendly cabin as well. Can't get priority because of the dog as we're placed near the lifts and early off anyway to be fair.

    Safe journey.

Enjoy the pastries in the morning, the kids will love the hot chocolate, hope you've booked it!!!

Is it possible to buy club access on Irish Ferries onboard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭idontknowdoyou

im not sure but we always go clubclass and feel its worth the money but noticed this year its just filled with noisy kids running around climbing on chairs, akin to a softplay area, whereas in the past we would have found it quiter. Just an fyi if you are travrlling without kids its gone very noisy… still better than the other areas

The last few years we have been sailing on BF. Always got the Commodore cabins on the way back and they were great. They really felt like a nice treat on last stretch of the holiday but the overall cost of BF in the last few years was a lot less than IF so it was an option. Club class on IF seems and feels significantly more expensive.

Interesting point about the kid though. Our own kids are old enough for wandering about themselves anyway.

    Interesting development.

Lack of competition is never good for those using this route

Have been reports that the ferry currently servicing this route ('Stena Vision') is on its/ her last legs. If true, seems like the route is uneconomical for one of the newer ferries

Currently in Sylvamar near Biarritz via Bilbao ferry. Great site, kids loving it. Weather is fantastic.

We usually do Cherbourg and hit the wine supermarket on the way home.

Is there anything even approaching an equivalent if we’re sailing back from Bilbao?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭danfrancisco83

We're back from our first trip to France, we didn't bring home much wine apart from a few bottles we bought in Super U. Where is the wine supermarket on the way to/from Cherbourg? We'll definitely go the next time.

Any recommendations for a decent campsite in and around Paris or to be precise Beauvais Airport?
Thinking of a quick fly and drive holiday in August for 5-7 days.

Nothing booked, so its all last minute.

Another alternative would be Charleroi near Brussels. Does anyone else camp in Belgium? France is only an hour or so south of Charleroi, so an easy fly and drive option.

I've used this one a few times. Really nice staff. Owned by an English guy, I think.

Gave me a free bottle last time to drink on the ferry!

It's handy if your boot is full as you can just fill the footwells with cases of wine! Not much of a journey left at that point.

So there’s two spots I’ve been to but this is the one I recommend.

    https://maps.app.goo.gl/92evbsf5jZVRFd3W9?g_st=ipc

Staff are great. They’ll help you as you walk around asking how much you want to spend, what type of wine you want. You can be in and out in 20 minutes and have nine cases of savage cheap wine in the boot just before you roll onto the ferry.

That's perfect thanks. I done a quick Gmaps search earlier and that's the one that seems to have the best reviews, definitely going there the next time we're over.

It's very handy - just off the first roundabout you hit when you reach Cherbourg. We load up then go the back roads to the Eleclerc by the port, get some of the groceries we love bringing back, get lunch in a nice cafe in the leclerc and then head for the ferry

We stayed hear 3 years ago.

    https://www.eurocamp.ie/campsites/france/paris/la-croix-du-vieux-pont-campsite

Here is the private accommodation link

It was our first experience of a Eurocamp so was more than happy enough. But having now being to some amazing camps in Spain, I wouldnt go there just to spend time in the camp alone.

It was perfect though as a base for daytrips to Disneyland, Paris & Champagne and a couple of other places. Drove into Chantilly and got the train into Paris for the day. However could of easily spent the day tramping in Chantilly itself. A stunning town.

Flew into Beauvais and got a hire car - was all very easy.

Hi folks. First time sailing from Dublin to Cherbourg this Saturday at 16:00.

There's surprisingly little information on the IF website on what time to turn up. Last boarding is at 15:00, but when should / can we get in the queue? We've priority disembarkation an the French side if that matters.

I don't mind being too early at all. Just want to get on board as soon as possible to explore the boat with the kids. Thanks in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭sceach16

If U have priority exit, you need to be there on the early side. Check in nearer 2 than 3. You will be boarded among the early ones because you are parked near the exit ramp for disembarking.

Mini heart attack there reading the url!

We travel on that route this Thursday, heading on to la Grande Metairie near Carnac

When I was trying to book a number of weeks back, the Irish Ferries route was coming in at €1,900+ for us whereas the Stena route was €955

I just checked Irish Ferries there now & the same route is €1,300

We’re travelling Omagh to Rosslare, so would have much preferred going out of Dublin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,509 ✭✭✭✭markodaly

Thanks for that. From reading reviews of this and other campsites, the experience seems to vary somewhat. Some of the reviews absolutely go to town, which is kind of funny but makes me wary.

Spain is an interesting one, what campsites would you recommend there?

Stena Vision is certainly an old ship but her facilities made her very popular with holiday makers but not really suitable for freight. The other ship they had on the route up to last year Stena Horizon was the opposite, Excellent for freight but lots of holiday makers found her facilities a bit basic.

Interesting to see if Brittany Ferries take over the Stena slots from Rosslare.

Hi all, first time ferry user next month Cork- Roscoff staying in an Airbnb near the coast and not far from Pont l'Abbbe. Taking our EV and we've hired an EV before so not worried about charging etc.

Any tips/hacks/advice from you seasoned sailors for the ferry crossing and all recommendations for places to visit/things to do/places to eat etc would be very welcome.

Don't exactly like flying so this could possibly be our mode of transport from now on if all goes well. The hardest part will probably be the trip from north Donegal to Cork🤭

    Thanks in advance

hi all, when do the flights for june 2026 go on sale does anyone know?

I'm currently looking on skyscanner for DUB to Marseille or Beziers but nothings coming up?

Likewise the cost of the ferry (on Irish ferries) is only letting me put in until december 2025?

Possibly a bit early for flights. But do remember that it’s Beziers - Shannon, not Dublin.
