They think they own Hits in Ireland

They are still there but rebranded to GHR.

I wonder if a radio station had a show called "Classic Hits" - would they take any action on this as well ?

With the number of name changes that 4FM have had over the years it wouldn't be much of a jump to think that they might have rebranded to Greatest Hits Ireland.

I think also the current set of DAB channels are nothing massively new, I can't see it lasting beyond the year unless someone makes significant gains in audience out of it.

Are Classic Hits Ireland on DAB+?

Also Wireless Ireland rebrand to ONIC to avoid confusion with NewsTalk, so I was told by someone in the know. They didn't want to go with News Ireland.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Seems quite spurious actually. A bit like Pepsi Cola getting an injunction against Coca Cola when they both contain the word cola in the name. If you’re running a classics service you have few options with naming you’d think.

Now that's what I call Greatest Classic Hits 2025!

Surprised that Bauer don't use any of their suit of Irish Brands for Greatest Hits, Spin or Beat Hits would have worked. Though too many of these meaningless radio stations.

Beat 00s, Spin 00s and TodayFM 00s do you need 3 stations doing the same thing from the one company?

The name 'Greatest Hits ' comes with all the imaging in place and was a no brainer imho. That they are sticking to GHR is to allow a simple transition back to Greatest Hits when the court action is resolved.

Beat / Today etc have very different audiences hence Beat 00s, Today 00's , and it's also very cheap to run these services .

surprising that Bauer don’t launch a few of their other brands on the DAB test especially Magic and Kiss

I wouldn't be surprised if Beat, iRadio and Spin become Hits radio, with regional opt outs, not sure why you'd keep those brands, Red FM might be come Cork's Greatest Hits.

Wouldn't of thought there was much need for Beat and Spin 00s.

Spin used to have the noughty threesome stream, based off the back of a feature on Fully Charged. I would presume they just rebranded the stream once the show dropped the feature, rather than dropping the stream entirely

Looks like beats version of that was Naughty Beats which has since the take over rebranded to Beat 00s

Not sure that suing a local community radio station would look good.

When Spin first started they used to have Shite Night (or was it Shite Nite?) where they played crap songs and cheese in an ironic manner. Many of the songs they played then can still be heard on Today FM and 2FM.

yeah…they were classed as 'shite' back in the day but now are credible …

just like a lot of the 1980s songs considered throwaway pop, but now are considered masterpieces in pop (take for example the stock aiken waterman stuff from dead or alive to kylie)

Back on topic, AFAIK the last time a station was subject to an interlocutory injunction over a name was when Energy 103 was prevented from using the Radio Nova name in 1987.

Ultimately the judgement went in favour of Energy 103.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭California Dreamer

Also pretty ironic that Bay used the well established with a certain age demo the name NOVA and almost the same logo as well. But yeh sure, shout and scream that there will be confusion by the listener!

There is also an online station called Hits Radio Ireland, which seems to have come out of Charity Radio.

and i radio's was i radio old school.
the problem now is that all 3 00s stations are the exact same playlist in the exact same order with the relevant jingles, rather then 3 unique streams as previous which worked well as they played the various tracks each station would have played back then.
of course there will have been cross over and lots of it but each stream would have tracks that the others didn't play.
both the red fm and 98 fm dance and r&b streams have the same problem, they are the exact same playlists with relevant jingles.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

I find it interesting that to comply with the lawsuit they shortened the name to GHR. Conveniently this means they can use the exact same logo of the UK station with the full name they cannot use.

Its this logo that is on my car for GHR, and the same acronym logo is used in the UK for the station called Greatest Hits Radio.

yes that comes up on the internet radio feed on my stream 93i

Are you sure about this? Nova 100 tried to amalgamate with Energy in 1986. It was short lived as the receiver objected. The Nova name wasn't used in Dublin until the relay of satellite Nova in 1987.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,144 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I thought Nova and Energy were chris cary's - why would this be an issue ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Nova media services Ltd was put into receivership , when Energy (fronted by Sybil and Tony McKenzie) started using the 'Nova' name , the receiver of Nova Media Services Ltd, Pearse Farrell got the injunction.

Nova Media Services Ltd has now come out of receivership, (the longest in company history iirc) it's address is Castleforbes House....

There is also a show on Community Radio Kilkenny City 88.7 called 'Classic Hits'

    https://crkc.ie/schedule-2/

    https://crkc.ie/show/classic-hits/

which according to their website is on "9:00 pm - 10:59 pm" on Saturdays. (Don't know why they give the time that way! why not '9pm-11pm' ?)

Kilkenny is outside their FM franchise area though, but of course served online.
