Disposing of household junk

We have a few items to get rid of as part of a pre-renovation clearout, they are large, bulky and awkward - an old trampoline frame, a fairly wrecked sofa, some other very worn furniture items….

I know there are some house junk removal services but I don't want to pay for someone to take the stuff and the dump it in a ditch in Wicklow so can anyone recommend a crowd that actually do get rid of this kind of stuff responsibly….?

I know there are apps where I could offer some of the items for free so I will try that, but as another option I would like to be able to arrange for it to be definitely gone when we need it to be…

You could look into the council taking them?

Not sure where you are but we had a sofa, some chairs etc I think it was something like 30 euro in Dublin

I know someone who has used gocar for similar, cost about 30 quid to rent one of their vans for an hour or so. I suspect much cheaper than paying someone reputable.

Edit! It starts at €12 per hour for a small van, maxes out at €60 for the day. The larger van is only a little bit more expensive.

This is what I usually do. Rent go van, dump in council municipal centre.

There's a couple of recommendations on this thread that might be of use to you.

Presumably you can dismantle/cut up the trampoline? Mini skips can be gotten from around €120.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

I cut them up so they fit in the car.

Ballyogan bring centre doesn't allow you drive in with commercial vehicles, so rent a van and do it myself is out really....

Look for a disposal service that is actually licensed, with a NWCPO…. number.

interesting - do they explicitly say commercial vehicles? dublin city council allows vans but not commercial waste. a go van is fine.

ballyogan is in a different local authority obviously.

I've brought Govans and, in the past, my own work van to DCC and Fingal waste centres. Coolmine seem to try and charge you as little as possible and charged me the price for a car van (car with no back seats) for an actual mini van (Connect) too.

yep, it's worth them what you're disposing of, i've found. tell them 'it's a sofa' rather than allowing them to think it's a van packed to the rafters with junk.

Ballymount will, just a few junctions down the m50.

i just checked the PDF for ballyogan on the DLR website and it does not state commercial vehicles are not allowed, it states commercial waste is not allowed.

edit: i was searching for mention of 'commercial' in relation to vehicles, and missed the 'the facility is for the use of private vehicles only'.

i'd ring them to confirm the policy; a go-van is not being used as a commercial vehicle in that sense, it's being hired for private use.

Ballymun is the same, we had a couch and an office chair to get rid of last year and borrowed a van to do it. The guy at the gate asked us what we had, we told him, then he asked could he take a look in the van, did so, and only charged us 15 quid to dispose of the stuff rather than the 55 we were expecting.

Ballymount centre is great, just off that pox of a road the m50. they take everything. well laid out.

it can be busy at times, but if you manage to avoid the pure idiots who ignorantly block the place up, you can be in / out with a full car in in minutes, once you load in the stuff correctly.
