They then beat Meath to win Leinster, and Meath topped their group beating Kerry on the way. From here on out it`s knockout football so every game is a bar of soap.

Happier to have them than Cork or Galway at this stage, but I would not underestimate Louth. They have a knack of scoring goals, and they have a bit more scoring power this year than last where if you managed Mulroy you took a lot of the sting out of them.

At intercounty level these chances have to be put away. Because McBrearty is all left foot he took the shot on allowing the keeper to get back. The other goal opportunities we had were poor also. Look how Galway put away their chances against Armagh. The ball must be driven along the ground preferably in the corner. I hope they are practicing this in training.

jeez that was some point by Moore. What a footballer. And a bloody good golfer as well I believe. Life’s not fair:)

Agree with all on ref. Gaelic football is a tough game to ref and you expect a few calls to go against you but that clown was as bad as a league of Ireland ref. Obviously the ones mentioned above not to mention Thompson I think being clattered as he went down on the ball and “Aido” committing 2 card offences and nothing done

How a footballer of McBreartys ability has a right foot so bad that he can’t roll the ball into the net from 4 yards with it is beyond me. Has he ever worked on it? Even at that he should have had it in the net with his left before Reape got back. Some save by Reape from ODonnell.

Oisin continues to frustrate. Why was he handpassing the ball across the goal when there was no teammates anywhere near?

Not sure about us on lockouts. Mayo seemed to be getting a lot of short ones away handy whereas we were having to perform heroics in midfield to win ours. Apart from a couple seemed to be a lack of movement out the field.

Hate to do a Dick Clerkin but I did say at the time that the Tyrone defeat might be a blessing in disguise and looking at the draw that might be the case.

Particularly with Armagh winning “the group of death” and looking like facing Kerry in the qf, and our dear neighbours getting Dublin or Galway as reward for spoiling Jim’s unblemished Ballybofey record :)

Anyway still looks like 6 or more teams could win it if they hit a streak of form at the right time which is brilliant. Good luck to whoever does. They’ll deserve it

Is Roarty supposed to be picking up Burns? He seems to be playing as a free man and so is Burns and you'd have to say it's working out better for them so far. Really need to be better in front of goal second half if we're to win this.

Should be well clear at half time, but they let Louth back into a game that they looked totally out of

I think it's fair to say we were a bit better in front of goal the second half! When we're on it we're really on it!

    Up Donegal

A game of two halves today. The first half was slow and ponderous with an abundance of lateral play. At half time nobody around me was brimming with confidence. At that stage we had dropped three into the keeper’s hands, kicked a couple of very poor wides and had turned over the ball cheaply on a number of occasions.
In the second half we brought pace and intensity to the game. Hughie was a dominant force and young Roarty is a remarkable talent. The two pointer Murphy kicked changed the momentum of the game and we were comfortable as the game wore on.
It was good to see Jason and Niall get game time and, importantly, McGonagle is out of the boot.
However, Patton is still not fully fit and Farrah picked up a knock too.
After the Tyrone loss we would have taken the position we are in.

My big concern is, we don't seem to be capable of a 70 minute performance. At times,we seem very good, and, we can get away with flat enough spells, like the 1st half today, but at some stage we're going to need to go toe to toe for 70 minutes with a better team than Louth.

Good to see Oisin getting the scores. I think he's been harshly judged this year, he's still capable of the form he showed last year but as a full forward, he's judged on scores.

And good to seen McGee play a half and Niall O'Donnell make an appearance. We need as deep a bench as possible heading to Croke Park.

Monaghan/Meath will fancy their chances. All things being equal, it's a good draw but we need to show up. The Ulster Championship match against Monaghan was a bit close for comfort at the end.

I was annoyed that the players weren't allowed to sign autographs for the wee ones. I understand they get tortured but maybe have a better system. My wee boy brought over his pens specifically to the match and hasn't washed the hat he got the Michael Murphy autograph from 2 years ago. It is a keepstake now.

Looking at the highlights Gallen had a decent game. Apart from the 5 points a lot of ball went through him. His movement was better and he found more room out around the half-forward line. Roarty, Thompson Impressed and an excellent second half showing by sub McFadden.

I think I would prefer Meath rather than Monaghan. I don't think Meath would be able to cope with our running game as much as Monaghan who we struggled against in the Ulster. Our running game requires huge reserves of energy. I just hope we can manage this next weekend.

And yet Shaun Patton was down under the terrace, ten minutes after the hooter, signing autographs and posing for photos. If you’re going to criticise a group of amateur players who are bringing great joy to their county at least try and be factual. Those players have signed thousands of autographs this season alone. Any child around me today had numerous autographs on their jerseys.
There was a very reasonable request to keep the pitch clear for two minutes after the hooter to allow the players deal with their media duties. Unfortunately that request was ignored.
Considering Michael Murphy wasn’t playing for the county two years ago your young lad did well to get his autograph.

    Armagh Kerry

    Tyrone Dublin

    Donegal Monaghan

    Galway Meath

I felt yesterday that it was better the devil you know in the draw. Meath I feel are more dangerous after after beating Kerry and Dublin, and will be stinging after losing Leinster. I could see them beating Galway, who seem punch-drunk. Little did we think after losing to Tyrone that it was the best thing that could have happened to us. We need to try and ensure the Monaghan game doesn’t go to extra time, with an extra week’s rest in their legs.

Great second half performance yesterday. Roarty looking very much like our future captain.

I think this has a lot to do with safety and security of players after the game. Recent years have shown that the flash-points happen most frequently on the pitch or coming off the pitch at half time or full time. I don't know this for sure, but would guess that management wants players in the dressing room asap in an organised fashion after the whistle has gone. Injury, suspension and fines are all really big issues for clubs and teams.

There was something off about that draw this morning. I definitely heard Donegal v Meath initially before it became Galway v Meath. Did anyone else hear that?

Saturday, we really are being asked to do things the hard way.

Once McGuinness called out the fixtures committee not surprised with the game on Saturday. They have it in for him. Unfortunately there is a huge amount of bile and resentment being focused on Jim and the team from outside the county. The favourites tag is annoying them big time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,626 ✭✭✭harpsman

what a stitch up. Saturday at 4pm. Donegal Monaghan and Tyrone all playing. Traffic should be fun. I’d leave Friday morning if you’re going!! Definitely a massive F€&@ You to McGuinness and Donegal supporters.

Would have been a no brainier to put Galway and Donegal games Sunday to give both teams a fair shake. As if shlieveen Jarlath and Croke Park care about that 🤮

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,416 ✭✭✭henke

Grossly unfair. All PQF winners could have been given 7 days but as it is only Galway and Dublin get 7. Kerry, the team who met no Division one sides in the Munster Championship or in the group stage get 8 and Donegal, the team who played 3 Division one sides in the Ulster Championship and two more in the group stage are given 6 days.

Some things the GAA can’t control like provincial imbalances and luck of All Ireland draw but when they sit down and look at it they should be doing better with what they can control and try to bring an element of fairness to it. Sunday evening prime time TV slot should not be put ahead of this for amateur players and especially with games week on week.

If they want to balance Tv scheduling flexibility and fairness there has got to be free weekends between games. As it is they have decided to shaft Donegal in this instance

I’m tired of the conspiracy theories and whinging already. Roll on Jones’s Rd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Ionraice

    Is it whinging, though?

It was a fair point that Roscommon wasn't a neutral venue. The GAA powers that be response in giving Donegal players only 6 days to recover, versus other counties getting 7 or 8 shows they couldn't care less about player welfare.

Neither do they appear to care about fairness.

Surely, if the GAA is about community and sporting values, and they actually care about player welfare, rather than revenue and tv ratings, fairness should be at the very heart of all they do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,190 ✭✭✭Ceist_Beag

You could see from the way Jimmy sent all the replaced players to the dressing room before the full time whistle and everyone else got in their quickly once the whistle went, that all focus was immediately switched to this weekend. All the noise since will be irrelevant to them and will help keep the focus elsewhere so that they can get on with the preparations. All good as far as Jimmy is concerned.

The points raised about the unfairness are all valid but I'm sure the lads were already preparing for something like this and will be ready come Saturday. It's time to look forward to what will hopefully be a full house and two cracking games (or one cracking game and a handy win for us would be ok too!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,508 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Yes, I hope there is focus on what's ahead. Players aren't in a bubble all the same, they will hear and see we what's going on. It's a great opportunity to get back to a semi final and let's hope we're up to it, even with the shorter turnaround.
