Some really good nice content coming from Sean Tobin in the last month or two, watched the Howth hill episode this morning, thats one hoor of a hill 5k to doing in 16 minutes

Watched it...some great runners in that crew...

Really enjoying the content as well. The Howth one is the best so far. It's also longer than the first few which is great to see. They give a good insight into his training, looking forward to more over the next few weeks

Just a small thing to mention. It would be great if more people liked, shared, comment or subscribe as I believe this would help him generate a small income from YT.

There's been a decent increase in Irish running content in the last few weeks. Anthony O Brien who trains with DTC also started a series called "Breaking 15". He's recently joined Raheny and done a video on the XC last weekend. Definitely worth a watch.

Think he will need to change to title of his vlog 😉

These are actually really good, I don't personally watch a lot of running youtubers as they always come across as cringey and a bit OTT to me, but the cinematography on those is fantastic and Sean comes across as super down to earth and likeable, thanks for the heads up👍

I've watched a few of Anthony's so far, he cones across as a great character. Obviously very talented as well. He was a good triathlete go he would have a good aerobic back ground. It will be interesting to see how far he can progress with DTC.

Really enjoyed Sean T episode last week as well.

I have it on good authority that the next episode is more about the auxiliary stuff around training such as S&C and physio etc.

Looking forward to it coming out next Tuesday

Seeing as we're posting running videos, I see Steve Magness is back posting regularly on his channel, he posted a fantastic video last week on the foundation of endurance training last week on it taking you from beginner to intermediate level runners. I would highly recommend to anyone who has an interest in bettering their understanding of training as it covers all the bases of how training should progress as you improve. It's a shame to see such a low sub count on the channel when you compare the nonsense most online "gurus" or "influencers" post

Its great to see more and more of these vlog coming out, however this one to me seemed not as good as some of the others. The sound quality was poor through imo.

I have to say I think Sean Tobins one released last week was excellent. It's great to see and indeed highlights why they do some of the none running stuff that they do, like gym and physio.. and why it's important for them to "trust" the physio to pick up one some areas that might need extra attention or prehab.

In my very biased opinion 😉

I done a 15x100m sprint session on the soccer pitch tonight and my garmin clocked me in at this:

    Screenshot_20241128_212824_Connect.jpg

So the next time anyone sees someone on the soccer forum saying Arjen Robben or whoevers gps clocked him at 37kph and he could beat Lyles or Bolt, just tell them pfft, have you ever heard of SuspectZero!? He done that Barefoot on a Sunday league pitch…

The Aran islands half marathon is down for the weekend of the 11th to the 13th. How does that work? Surely a half marathon is on one day for maybe 3 to 4 hours. Are they staggering start times across the 3 days or something?

    This too shall pass.

Any suggestions on some races or events in and around Dublin? Finished a three month plan for the half marathon and I've signed up for the full in October but far too early to start training for it.

Made my own pyramid session up once that was 300@mile pace, 400@3k pace, 500@5k pace, 600@10k pace, 500, 400, 300. 200m jog after each rep. Paces were all over the shop, but then the route wasn't flat enough, so made a mess of it really. Must try it again. That's 3 km of decent work.

That Michigan workout looks like a monster to a low mileage punk like me. Think the second half the the 1,200m@5k pace would be where I'd start to struggle probably. I'll give it a try at some point for the craic.

Edit: I see there is a recover jog in there so not just straight into the mile Tempos. That makes it look a little more possible.

I used to listen to this guys podcast which he hosted with an Irish guy based in the states, Luke Keogh. Bit of a daft move getting busted for drugs in the far east…

FDH is one of the giants for sure. And by all accounts a great person too.

Thanks for posting the video. Tor De Geants is such a brilliant race. For a long time I ranked it as my favourite. It's down to #3 now, but #2 is its bigger and gnarlier brother, the Tor De Glaciers! As is often the case there will be a big contingent of Irish at the Tor races this year. And in 2023 Emma Stuart won the Tor De Geant. That's possibly the best ever Irish Ultrarunning result.

I have to be honest, I had never heard of Emma Stuart or the Tor De Glaciers/Geants before this week, but wow -what an amazing event. Been looking at all the youtube content last couple of days, makes me wish I had some mountains near me.

I'm tempted to try my first half marathon - thinking Antrim coast as two friends are going up aswell.

Its also right at the end of track season so will be good endurance training for XC season which will begin soon after.

1h40 mins might be possible but coming from a short/middle distance background I know just because I find 4:45 per K easy doesn't mean I can hold it for that long.

Will see - could be fun but also very tough. Any advice?

    Edited to add

For anyone who has run a sub 1:40, what were your 3k/5k/10k times when you ran the half?

You can't go too far wrong by incorporating more threshold type sessions into your training plan. They will stand too you even for your track work.

Sessions that will build up over a few weeks, like 8/10 x 1k off 1 minute recovery, 5/6 x 2k again off short recovery. You don't need to do these hard. No more than 8/10 rpe. You could fine tune them a bit based of heart rate/lactate etc. But in reality they'll work well of rpe.

You might need to look at the length of your long run depending on what you currently do.

Hard to be to specific without out knowing your current training plan.

Usually 6 days a week at the moment including 1 yoga/stretching recovery session and one Strenght and conditioning session.

    3 easy runs, one hard 5k (Usually at 10k pace/effort or quicker) and 2 sessions (1 speed - 400s,300s,200s, etc) and (either pyramid/longer rep sessions - 5 x 1k or 400,600,800 up to 1200 and back down).

Mileage is about 64k/40 miles weekly.

Friday is yoga, every other day has training - gym or some sort of run.

Long runs don't really happen at the moment. My 3 easy runs are 40-60 minutes in duration and I always stay in top end zone 2/low end zone 3.

My issue will be building up the endurance/steady runs as all of my work is done @5k effort or quicker. Rest is just zone 2.

How much thresholdy type/steady running do you need for a half anyways? Could you get away with just being fast since you find the goal pace easy ish?

How much thresholdy type/steady running do you need for a half anyways? Could you get away with just being fast since you find the goal pace easy ish?

You could ask 100 people that question and get 100 different answers. As you're more focused on track races , 5000m I think?. You'd still benefit more from building your long run up to at least 20k. This can be done in z2. Personally I'd bin the 5k @ 10k pace and instead do the threshold sessions I mentioned earlier. Finding the goal pace easy is all well and good, and for sure you may well get away with it, but there's a difference of holding that pace for a longer duration, especially if you currently don't do a long run. You are putting your focus on a different energy and muscular system. Your 200 or 400 speed isn't going to benefit you at 18k.

Unless you're racing 800m I'd probably bin the "speed" session and just to 2 session per week, and build up the long run. Keep your pyramid session and a threshold session, 3 easy runs and a long run. You wouldn't go to far wrong doing this type of training. You can always get more specific at certain time depending of what you have coming up.

Edit. Training doesn't need to be hard or complicated to be effective, but it does need to be consistent. You will never hear any elite athlete mention one specific session that got them to where they are. But you always hear them say that that the consistent block of training is paying off. 😉

Thanks for the answer, really appreciate it.

I typically race 800,1500/Mile,3k and 5k depending on what race I have coming up.

Speed has to be kept up - its not up for debate with me unfortunatly as short distance track running is my thing mainly my thing although I do a few road races aswell.

Will try what you suggested with regards to the 5k @10k pace anyhow. A 10 miler @z3 or something along those lines instead - a solid 90 ish minutes.

Goal time is 1:40 so at least if I'm used to running for that long, it'll be something in my favour🤞.

I know my stuff when it comes to the short stuff (5k and below) but when it goes above that I'm pretty clueless.

You could incorporate your half marathon paced work into progressively longer runs at the weekend, and then keep your faster workouts for mid week?

I'll typically have multiple distance races coming up at the same time, but when I've got a half marathon coming up, I'll usually ramp up the long run at the weekend and include 2km floats slightly above or at half marathon pace the rest of the run being about 1min per km slower.

I.e. 4 - 6 weeks before race day starting at 20-22km with 3 x 2km at hm pace in the middle of the run, gradually increasing week on week, peaking at 26km with 5 x 2km hm pace, then I'll do the faster workouts midweek.
