I love the venue. Yes it's a shitshow getting there and back but the venue itself is an amazing sight / experience.

I've seen Guns n Roses both times, REM, U2 x 2 & Jason McAteer (a day never to be surpassed), KOL, Foo Fighters and Metallica.

    RIP Henry

Rite of passage for Irish gig goers. Those first gigs when you were 18/19, care free summer, physical ticket bought at a shop, no **** given about how you’re getting home afterwards. The buzz in the town, flagons and cans.

Not my first, but the Queens of Stone Age, Foo Fighters, PJ Harvey, Feeder and Chilli Peppers line up was a great day out. We managed to pay a security guard £20 for pit passes for all five of us after they were all gone.

Certainly made big gigs seem more possible in Ireland. Groundbreaking stuff.

Went to U2 and then the RHCP the following year but havent been back (and never will) since.

Madonna 2005 - worst gig ever attended in Slane.

I was there too for U2 day that Ireland played Portugal and Nelly Furtado was playing while match was on the screen - great times. Moby was unbelievable that day too.

1st trip was REM with Oasis as support and ticket was bought in Soundcellar.

Sorry to hear, he lived some life and seemed a cool dude

    The RTE documentary is excellent

Only went once - Queen, 5th July 1986, the day before my 14th birthday. It pissed rain for the day and I swore I'd never go back … and I haven't. R.I.P. - no doubting his impact and how legendary Slane became as an iconic Irish event.

Parents brought me to Slane Castle for my first gig, Bruce Springsteen in 1985. Been back since plenty of times, great place for a concert but it can be hell getting there & back again.

some great memories of gigs there

Oasis, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Guns n roses

    Less so Eminem

And less said about the journey in and out the better but some great days out were had there. Especially when we camped there found it much better experience.

My first ever outdoor gig… Slane 1981 …. with Thin Lizzy headlining. Me and the boys headed there by motorbikes that morning, parked up in a field on the Collon Road, walked in, had some beer and the rest of the day was a fantastic rock 'n' roll blur. So, thanks for the memories Henry. May you rest in peace!

Slane 1998 was my first concert, The Verve.

Went back the following year for Robbie.

Have seen Foos, GnR and Metallica since.

Camping for the last few made it a lot better in terms of logistics. Some great memories.

    RIP Lord Henry

Camping out there made all the difference, could hang back till we got thrown out. GnR x 2, Metallica, Foo's. Great memories. RIP.

I was there for the first one, Lizzy - in fairnes they were not great. Supported by U2, who were pretty good. Bruce was excellent, Dylan was OK - wish I'd been as familiar with his stuff as I am now. Bowie was good, but the wrong show in the wrong venue. I lived abroad for the ninties, but went back with my daughter when she was sixteen for Oasis / Prodigy / Kasabian in 2009 which while I'm not a huge fan of any, that was probably my best day at Slane. The entire audience singing 'Half The World Away' with just NG on an acoustic guitar is one of my best gig memories.

Well done, Lord Henry. You helped change this country in a good way…

Trying to get home after the oasis gig in 2009 and having to wait because our driver was having a 3sum in the back of a renault clio

Not technically a slane castle memory but Henry and Alex served me my 1st ever Whiskey Mojito made with Slane Castle whiskey years ago at a beer festival in Dublin. They even brought us down a free tray of them at the end of the night. I’ve been drinking them since, sorry to hear of his passing a very nice gentleman.

Making the decision to leave the awful and depressingly disappointing Bowie gig early is my abiding memory. Never seen so many bored people in the one spot.
RIP Henry, seemed a sound fella.

That was my first big outdoor gig.

Big Country made up for the dreariness of Bowie and his Glass Spider

My abiding memory is not so much the music but the massive moving crowd down near the front. Remember at one stage dropping my fag on the ground and bending down to try pick it up and realising immediately what a mistake that was!

Lizzy, Stones, Queen, Bowie and GNR twice. The Bowie light show was incredible but not during daylight. It was on tv from I think Australia and it was dark which is the way it should have been staged to be appreciated. Peter Frampton was great on the day as his guitarist.

Only ever at the REM gig and don't remember much about the music. I remember trying to get home took hours out of the car park

Oasis came on while park life was playing Liam was not impressed with it

People set fire to crushed paper cups and threw them around like frisbies… a wonderful sight

Drunk men built towers of drunk men trying to get as high as possible before falling down again

    It was a good day

U2 in Slane 2001 was my first ever proper gig. We arrived literally as Jason McAteer scored on the big screen and the place absolutely erupted. Great lineup that day with Nelly Furtado, Ash, Moby (with Father Dougal) and U2 in amazing form. Have watched the U2 part back on DVD plenty of times over the years. The transition from "All I Want is You" into "Where the Streets Have No Name" is still one of the greatest concert moments I've seen in person.

Have only been back twice since then (Rolling Stones in 2007 and Guns N Roses 2017). Support acts for both weren't a patch on the U2 day but the headliners themselves were both class. GNR doing a cover of Black Hole Sun the week that Chris Cornell passed away was a particular highlight.

I wasn't at the RHCP gig in 2003 but have watched that one on DVD a lot too. Seems to be held up by their fans as one of their best ever shows too.

Only real regret is that the ACDC in Slane meme never actually came true!

Metallica in 2019 was my only trip there so far. Great day and show (crazy we weren't aware James was relapsing). Ghost we're great as support and it pissed out of heavens for most of the set

Didn't find the walk to the venue from the bus station too long. Was pretty dark on the way back mind you

No idea who play if they have any more shows. U2 maybe if there stage allows it. Really is a legendary list of past headliners

Rolling Stones 1982, my 1st ever gig. Lit a fire in me for live performances that's still burning.

Thank you Henry, you made a positive difference for us by dreaming big.

Seen Brian Adams, Foos and RHCP there. Great venue but getting out is a pain in the balls.

First time going I went primarily to see Van but Pearl Jam and Neil Young with Booker T and the M.G.'s were both really good.

Next time was The Verve. One of my mates was moaning about needing Valium (I think he was dabbling in opiates at that stage) and low and behold walking up one of the roads with hundreds/thousands of others we found a trail of them evenly spaced about a two foot apart. Obviously they had fallen out of a pocket/bag as someone ahead marched along. Taking ten of them before going in made for an interesting day out. Missed Finlay Quaye but the Manics were okay and Robbie Williams in fairness to him gave it socks.

I was supposed to go to the Ireland match the day of the next one but gave up waiting and got a bus up instead. Thankfully they showed the second half of the match. The place went ballistic when Ireland scored and won. The atmosphere was electric after that. U2 weren't bad either ;) Got back to Dublin on the bus in time to make the offie.

Last time I went was Metallica. The weather was pretty shyte but it was enjoyable. They played Ride The Lightning and I was beaming after that. Thanks to this forum I found out about the campsite and the craic there all weekend was great.

I've never had a bad experience although logistically I can see how it can be nightmare.

Some great memories there alright, i was at 6 of the gigs there:

    REM ‘95(Oasis supported)

U2 ‘01- both gigs(Coldplay, RHCP, Moby supporting) got at the “heart rail” for the 1st one

Stereophonics ‘02, got freebies for that one but not bad

    RHCP ‘03, (Foo’s supporting)

Rolling Stones ‘07, thought it was the worst gig of all of them.

My sister was at Bruce in ‘85, i wanted to go but was told i was too young !

It is a particularly mesmorizing venue especially in good weather. I stayed there for two of the above gigs in the local hostel which was quite handy, but it is tricky to get in and out alright.

I was talking to someone today, and they mentioned “he invented big estate gigs”, i said he “perfected it”, as i n Ireland that accolade is with the Boomtown Rats & The Guinness family. They played Leixslip Castle more than a year before the 1st Slane gig. In March 1980.

I loved the sequence and build up for events for Slane, the rumours, the teasing comments from lord Henry, then the big press conferences, and some fantastic support slots, the 1st U2 gig was the best lineup, i’ve ever seen at a single gig:

Kelis, Relish, JJ72, Coldplay, RHCP, U2

    RIP Lord Henry

2003 gig with RHCP + many more. Amazing time, watched it a few years ago on YouTube, great memories. Will have to find some time over the weekend to rewatch it!

1986 The Bangles - with Queen as the support act 😁

I can still see the wink Suzanna gave me

He was a massive fan of Moby and still mentions it to this day
