We've been all over Switzerland, Basel is grand but nothing special. If you want the real Swiss experience, I'd go an extra hour and see Lucerne, it's everything you'd imagine Switzerland to be.

If you don't fancy that long of a spin, stick with France. Highly recommend La Route des Vins, the scenery and villages in the area are stunning. Riquewihr, Kayersberg, Ribeauvillé and lots more.

Looking for a recommendation for an overnight in Normandy.

We'll be travelling from Le Pin Parasol to Cherbourg. We've been to Saint Malo (although didn't stay over) and Mont Saint Michel before and I have been to Caen and WW11 sites.

So where does that leave?! Thanks.

Can you tell me more about Caen and Ouistreham? We'll be going with teens and younger.

We're just back from Le Littoral, had an almost perfect holiday. I'd done loads of research for this trip because it was our first time going by ferry. We stayed 10 nights in Le Littoral, then 2 nights in Pontorson on the way back so we could visit Mont St. Michel and break up the drive home. We even managed to get to Utah beach on the way back. So now we're all excited and looking to plan next year's trip. I have a bit of a problem though, Le Littoral has the lovely town of Les Sables d'Olonne just 6km west, Talmont St. Hilaire is just around the corner, Plage du Veillon (one of the best beaches I've ever seen) just 5 mins drive away, Puy du Fou just an hour away… how do I top that?

I'm looking at other 5 star camps and none of them seem to have that sweet spot of beach, pool slides, atmosphere (perfect for 8 year old and 3 year old), town nearby, etc. etc.

It's not really in our nature to repeat holidays, we can't understand people that go to the same place in Torremolinos every year, but this was honestly perfect.

So has anyone been to Le Littoral but preferred a different site on the west coast, or at least found one almost as good?

Looking an maybe doing Brittany Ferries to Bilbao and looking at Camping Le Vieux Port, that gives us Biarritz and San Sebastian to tick off the bucket list, anyone done that?

Not really considering the Perpignan side, too much driving, and not really into flying and renting a car, we loved having the few bits from home, like a good iron, favourite knife and chopping board, little things like that.

We are getting Brittany Ferries to Bilbao on Friday and our first stop is Camping Le Vieux Port so will let you know how we get on.

I haven't been to Le Littoral but its on my list. I think if you had such a good time there would be no harm in going back another year while the site suits the ages your kids are.

So, we went to Le Littoral last year, like you, for the first time, and did two weeks there, and found it amazing.

The one thing I noticed, was that it's not great for kids over 12. Now, our kids are young enough to do plenty more years there, but this summer, we're doing 1 week in Le Littoral and and 1 week in another site, for the same reasons as yourself

Will let you know in a months time, how we got on :D

Le Clarys Plage might be a good option. We were there last year and Le Littoral the year before.

Le Clarys Plage has done up their pool area this year so it'll be even better. There are a few restaurants 1 minute walk away, the beach is a 5 minute walk. And St. Jean de Monts is a 30 minute cycle or a short drive.

Ile de Noirmoutier is worth a visit for their salt fields and the town is nice.

    Very much worth considering.

    @John_Rambo

Stayed in Caen for 2 nights. 3 men doing the world war sites. Nice little city with a Luas like tram for getting around, depending on where you're staying.

It was mainly just a base for us to do the beaches and other WW11 sites. Plenty of nice restaurants and bars in close proximity.

The war museum there is absolutely fantastic. You'd spend a full day in it. Really recommend going there.

Didn't see Ouistreham bar a few museums.

    @danfrancisco83

Have a look at Le Jard in La Tranche sur Mer. The site itself is excellent, just about to finish our second visit. Our kids are a bit younger, but no shortage of 8-10 year old kids about. Mostly very modern mobiles bar the old original part with cheaper mobiles. Excellent pools, both indoor and outdoor. Modern bar and restaurant and a good shop on site too. Great cycling routes, nice towns nearby, La Rochelle within an hour. Water park 10m in away (O'Gliss) is supposed to be very good. But only opens in July/August We've probably done everything there is bar the water park, and likewise, on the lookout for a new spot for next year. But highly recommended.

Headed for Les Ormes tomorrow for a few nights to break up the drive home and have a few more days of fun.

Thanks, I've a few nice options on the spreadsheet for next year

    Hi

Just back from two and half weeks in Spain and France and had a great time.

Took the ferry from Rosslare to Bilbao on the Wednesday sailing and was a small bit worried about the potential length of the journey. Boat leaves at 9am and gets in at 1pm the following day. TBH it was a very relaxing journey, the sea was calm which helped but what also helped was the C-Club Lounge which was fantastic. The lounge had food out all day long, they had breakfast out when we got on which was great because we were up since 5am. But they had snacks and hot food laid on all day long. They also had wine on tap for the lunch and dinner servings about 2no 3 hour windows. As a result the day flew by. I would recommend if going on the Bilbao trip.

The rest of the trip was great also and I won’t go into all the details but by far the highlight was Ile-de-Re…this place is magical…I had been there before for a day visit but I think the place really shines when you get rid of the car and get on your bike. We were there for 5 nights and we didn’t use the car once for the entire trip. We also got electric bikes which again helped in the enjoyment. There is almost a separate world out there on the island one for bikes and then the car. Villages are beautiful and there are loads of little restaurants along the cycle path that you can stop off at, all the town centres are locked off from cars all in all I think we did nearly 130km of cycling when there. Will go back there again no problem. We had perfect weather when there also which helped!!

The other highlight was getting the Commodore cabin back into cork and we got the priority disembarkation. For €15 on top of the cost of the commodore it was brilliant we were 3rd onto the ship and the 3rd car off the ship. I didn’t mind too much getting off but what I wanted was getting on quicker to enjoy the Commodore. If you are getting the Commodore it would be criminal not to get this for €15.

Now off to plan 2026 trip!!!

Where did you stay on Ile de Re?

Whats is best accomadation options you saw there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,053 ✭✭✭✭fits

great review thanks for posting. I have commodore booked both ways thanks to this thread. Just added priority disembarkation. And now I want to go to ile de re as well!

Travelling next Saturday, and I'm beyond excited now. I've got the kids all hyped too.

My wife will probably take the kids back to the room early enough that evening. Looking forward to checking out the Commodore Lounge then. I fully expect to be disappointed :D

Would love to get our mobile home numbers early, so could see where we're going to be located, but suppose we'll just have to wait a little longer

One thing is you do have to be there a bit earlier, they say 1hr 45mins before departure, but its not much more that you would be there anyway. Have fun

We stayed in https://www.eurocamp.ie/campsites/france/charente-maritime/la-grainetiere-campsite through Eurocamp. What I would say the campsites on Ile-de-Re are not as big as on the mainland so don't expect the huge slides and massive pool complexes. This was a nice cosy site, really liked it as well. Mature trees and close to La Flotte.

Thing to note the Airport in La Rochelle is very near the bridge onto the Island and I saw a lot of people getting taxis to the site. They seem set up for it. I would consider myself getting a plane and a Taxi to the Island for the week in future, because you wont need the car.

Hi all, apologies if this has been answered but I can't find results in my search.

I have looked at Hippocket WiFi for our holiday and it is quite expensive.

Has anyone used a pocket 4g WiFi router like a TPLink with a French SIM card while on holidays? I can get a 4g router on Amazon but I have no idea how to get a SIM card.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Would hotspot off a phone not work equally well. With an esim to control costs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭Doug Stamper

Good idea never thought of that, would multiple devices be able to connect at once do you know? Fire stick/tablet/phone. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,606 ✭✭✭Peckham

I've done it previously with kids on tablets, music streaming and still using my phone. Doubt it would handle multiple devices streaming HD videos, but it's fine

Thanks Peckham. It looks like a very good option. I can get an unused phone too that can act as the hotspot.

I'm currently sitting in Bella Italia drinking cocktails and it's definitely worth looking at. Weather is very hot but mobile has air con and it's manageable

Lots to do in the campsite and nearby, water park is great

Only things I'd say is missing is a decent beach, it's all stones here but there's a good seaside walk

We rented a car (Mustang Mach E) from Verona, it's my first time driving LHD and in Italy but it's easy enough to get used to. Having the car definitely gives us some more mobility and there's chargers onsite so no issues keeping the car charged

Did Gardaland today which is suitably epic. The waterpark there is brilliant, but my main complaints are that you need to pay into Gardaland to go there and it's a lot to do the park and water park in 1 day

2 days booked in advance would probably be way better value but it's hard to pin down the weather, don't want it too hot with younger kids in tow

look at Sandaya Séquoia Parc its a 5 star resort didnt stay there - but it is a bit of a cycle from the town. The la palmyre area is fantastic and much nicer than vendee which is pretty boring imo. In our case we would prefer a more basic campsite right beside amenities and town rather than a 5 star in the middle of nowhere. There are loads of french sites we passed in that area including eden village and cap n fun which looked fab.

I have a small tplink dongle that takes a micro SIM. I've also bought an Orange prepay data SIM from Simoptions.com that does me for the holiday.

The SIM options site is great, I've received the SIM 2-3 days after ordering. Once you stick it in the dongle, your 30 days commence and I then register it online and can top it up if required.

Main thing is it means the rest of the family's devices aren't tethering off my phone and it doesn't go red hot acting as the hotspot!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭Doug Stamper

Super, thanks Heroditas. That's the set up I was hoping to have. I'll look up that site for the SIM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,710 ✭✭✭Heroditas

Holiday Orange is the one I've bought previously.

Can you link the simoptions one you are referencing? I looked at their website and they seem dear. I posted a question here a couple of weeks back but I think the best option for me to use in a spare phone for everyone to tether off is a Vodafone data unlimited plan for €20 which has 40gb roaming for 4 weeks

Anyone know what "Fast Check-in" entails with Sandaya in Le Littoral?

I've paid my deposit, and completed all the forms. Assume I still need to park-up and go into reception to pick-up my keys

Any recommendations for a toll tag? And save me from doing the research.

Will be driving 2000 km so could do with a tag.

Has anyone used GomoWorld for data? They have a 30 day e-sim plan with 85GB for €30. Looks good for use in a phone to use as a hotspot.
