On one hand is heartening to see so many pictures of massive crowds at protests right across ~~America~~ Trumpistan from average people who came out in droves to make it clear they don’t want a king

on the other hand it’s depressing having a member of us military yet again perform mental gymnastics to distract from the boiling pot of tyranny he must have swore to protect his country against at some stage

Earlier in thread I predicted next steps would be dead journalists and then politicians, we got to that stage much faster now

I've been naively hoping for years, like many, for some event or red line to be crossed which would break the spell that most Trump supporters are under -starting with 'Grab em by the p****'. Obviously since then thousands of statements, lies, acts of self-enrichment, convictions, incitement etc have flown by, I'm convinced that nothing will change the minds of the people who are 'all in' on Maga. The only question for me now is how this ends? States breaking up? Pseudo-civil war? Assassination? Military state?

I'd be curious to hear others opinions or the end game.

You absolutely know that he could have had that display after his birthday. The reason why he didn't is clear to see in the above context and speaks to his sick and disturbed mindset.

Honestly, sometimes you come across as the person who is bitten by a zombie and tries to pretend everything will be okay.

You seem to think that so long as you don your uniform and follow orders this movie will have a happy ending.

Your belief in the checks and balances is fatally flawed and it'll be sheer luck and not your faith in the constitution that'll get us all out of this.

It's the latest example of fascist behaviour coming out of the US.

Police in the video first engaged with video recorder and someone else and when they were told to "Honour your oath, bi*ch", turned and arrested both people.

A slam dunk case of first amendment right contravention by cops on a power trip. We saw Trump threatening violence on protestors against his military parade and I saw a video of a sheriff from Florida acting like he was in a movie when he was telling the media just how they were going to use violence, up to and including fatal actions, against people who oppose them.

America hasn't been as close to being a tinder box since the summer of 2020 when Trump dealt with BLM protests by asking the army to shoot them in the legs.

Unaccountable power is the end game.

The world is coming to a point where the concept of infinite growth is really starting to rub up against the fact that resources are finite. Instead of fundamentally rethinking economies of the world, the super-rich are instead looking at ways to protect their piece of the pie. After all, societies are predicated on scarcity - your position in society is based on how much of the scarce thing you have vs others. If nothing was scarce, everyone would be a king in a way, and people like Elon Musk wouldn't be particularly special.

So, to protect their position, authoritarianism becomes very attractive. And the great thing about authoritarianism is that it will accept any ally no matter how insincere or temporary. The only goal is power. Contrast this with left-wing ideals that demand purity of thought and intent since they strive toward an egalitarian utopia and so attack each other rather than their enemies.

I think it'll be a military/police state for the US in the medium term. If the left and middle are to defeat the MAGA monster, they really have to put petty differences aside and cop the same kind of unity that the right to far right has been able to find.

Can't believe I didn't mention healthcare...it's an endless list of worse.

For balance some racist gop supporters would say that he stopped all the "criminals flowing through the borders". I contend that they didn't exist in the first place but he has managed to destroy small business all over the US by forcing foreign workers into hiding. He might as well drop a nuke somewhere in the US, it would be less damaging than his administration
