It's the hammer, nail thing in the US right now. Just following orders.

When every boss is hammered and begging to get nailed

    Ripped from Twitter.

In the last week, Marines were deployed in an American city, the president has called for a gov to be arrested &the speaker of the House has called for that gov to be tarred & feathered, a senator has been pinned & handcuffed, and 2 state legislators have been shot in their homes.

Also, the same Republican President said protestors would be met with great force if they came out at his military parade. And as I stated earlier, a GOP representative claimed at a committee meeting that the Democrats are the party of violence.

Someone said fascism can appear in this environment, it could be strongly argued that it's already present.

Thank fook for those checks and balances. If it wasn’t for them I’d almost be worried

Please stop conflating the wisdom of courses of action with their legality.

The transfer of federal property to the Army at the border is precisely an indicator that they are looking to follow the letter of the law as regards the use of federal forces. If they didn't care about that, then they wouldn't have done it. Until they did that, there was absolutely nothing the troops could have done to stop migrants bar call CBP. Not that they were advertising it, but it was a fact of law.

I get that you don't like what the miltary is being used for in LA. I'm not overly thrilled at it myself. But your or my personal dislike for a policy has no bearing on the lawfulness of the policy. The use of federal miltary forces to ensure the civilian functions of government has longstanding precedent and does include protecting administrative centers. It does not violate PCA, and won't until the Supreme Court decides to issue a ruling otherwise.

[Reply to the edit] I don't recall being asked about that before, but I'm not a fan of curating audiences on political grounds. That said, if someone doesn't want to be there, I'm fairly sure they shouldn't be obliged to be. The error, I think, was Trump's in making a partisan speech diverging into non miltary subjects in front of what was a non-partisan miltary setting.

So if you don't think it's a coincidence, I'm curious as to how you think it was arranged that Trump and the Army should happen to have the same birthday?

I can understand why trained professionals would be trying to keep them as separate events that just happened to occur together.

Because to acknowledge the reality of the situation would mean that they've been reduced to the involuntary party entertainment of a spoiled rich kid who actively mocks their profession.

that’s fair, wasn’t aware it was the exact same date. Thought it was just the week/month so I’ll retract that.

In much the same way you can hire a clown to show up for kids party?

You're the military man, why don't you tell us how you'd do it?

That's called a happy coincidence, but he hasn't needed his birthday to cause lots of chaos.

Last night RTE showed Louis Theroux's interview with the madame of West Bank "settlements"

She made the point that they were "giving courage" to the government by their illegal actions, finishing by telling Louis "I think you know what I mean"

    Sounds familiar,if inverted

Trump himself has said it is a joint celebration

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

People wearing “checks and balances” and pro gun T-shirts all of which are hilarious now that dictatorship has come to America

Anyways gonna leave this here (from 2011)

Stop calling that place America, America we knew and loved is dead

It’s now officially known as Trumpistan

I didn't say it in a blasé manner. Slacktivism is a known term and a problem that inhibits organised political action throughout the world. If the sentiments expressed online aren't taken into some kind of organised political action in the physical space, then the targets of the sentiment aren't going to be particularly worried.

And this is only 5 months into his presidency. I genuinely don't know how the f*ck America is going to deal with another 3.5 years of this authoritarian madness and incendiary rhetoric.

There's literally millions of American protesting Trump right now and the media reports "tens of thousands". It amazes me when Republicans think the media is biased against them.

The transfer of federal property to link it to a military installation over 100 miles away in another state was nothing other than a blatant attempt to get around the Posse Comitatus Act by giving the military the power to detain civilians that otherwise was forbidden unless it was on a military base. Where even there they could only escort them off the base or hand them over to the relevant civil authority. Homeland Security, who you yourself said the marines handed that detained civilian too, are not the relevant civil authority in LA. Whatever the training they were going through before being deployed on the streets of LA, it appears that fact was not part of that training.

To use the old Irish saying " Will you ever get up the yard"

Trump did not make a speech in front of a non-partisan military. Those attending had been segregated based on those that politically favoured Trump and those that dis-favoured, with those that favoured being sat front and centre for the media as a back-drop for Trump, (the plumpers had to go off and sit with those that dis-favoured Trumps politics), and allowed to cheer and applaud his attacking of the media and his political opponents. It was shameless politicising of a military force that is supposed to be apolitical where Trump was aided and abetted by the military hierarchy.

I don`t recall any booing from those that didn`t favour Trump`s policies , but then they either understood what apolitical means, or more likely they saw from the segregation how the wind was blowing as regards the military hierarchy under Trump. That is something you should perhaps give some thought too rather than talking about a non-partisan apolitical military after what we saw from Fort Bragg.

If some lad in South America was acting like Trump the US army would have him taken out.

But in America itself they have always shown themselves to be dangerously authoritarian.

Maybe in the past, but in this day and age, the US would cosy up to that type of leader. Maybe ask for a dig out on some prisoners they want to deport with little regard for due process or human rights.

I think if the birthdays didn't overlap, there'd have been no such parade today.

    But maybe that's just me.

Has bondi come out and said they will be seeking the death penalty for the shooter yet?

On one hand is heartening to see so many pictures of massive crowds at protests right across America Trumpistan from average people who came out in droves to make it clear they don’t want a king

on the other hand it’s depressing having a member of us military yet again perform mental gymnastics to distract from the boiling pot of tyranny he must have swore to protect his country against at some stage

Earlier in thread I predicted next steps would be dead journalists and then politicians, we got to that stage much faster now

How long before apartment blocks start blowing up?

I've been naively hoping for years, like many, for some event or red line to be crossed which would break the spell that most Trump supporters are under -starting with 'Grab em by the p****'. Obviously since then thousands of statements, lies, acts of self-enrichment, convictions, incitement etc have flown by, I'm convinced that nothing will change the minds of the people who are 'all in' on Maga. The only question for me now is how this ends? States breaking up? Pseudo-civil war? Assassination? Military state?

I'd be curious to hear others opinions or the end game.

He displays ALL ten attributes of a fascist.

You absolutely know that he could have had that display after his birthday. The reason why he didn't is clear to see in the above context and speaks to his sick and disturbed mindset.

Honestly, sometimes you come across as the person who is bitten by a zombie and tries to pretend everything will be okay.

You seem to think that so long as you don your uniform and follow orders this movie will have a happy ending.

Your belief in the checks and balances is fatally flawed and it'll be sheer luck and not your faith in the constitution that'll get us all out of this.
