Shauna Ennis with a goal and Vikki Wall with a point in the last two minutes to rescue a draw against Armagh.

Minors beaten by 3 points in the Paul McGirr Cup final by Kildare. Lost the game in the first half but still could have snatched it in the second. Missed some two point efforts late on to draw level.

I was watching it online and they were really unlucky. Some bad wides second half killed them. Though the free Charlie Gallagher kicked from about 50ms was savage, he's some size for a lad of 17

Matthew Costello out which is concerning, Cathal Hickey replacing him. Hope this is just a precaution for the knockouts because, while he didn't have a great game against Roscommon, he's still one of the only players who can make something happen from nothing. Wouldn't have much confidence if he were out for the rest of the season.

No other changes to the team that started against Roscommon. But we'll see if there are other changes made before throw in.

Any news on if Costello is injured?

Serious loss if he is out long-term.

Not making it down today because of some stuff on at home, but I hope we at least give them a good rattle and bounce into the prelim, and have it at home. I've heard a rumor Banty is out too I hope its wrong

That was one big win for Meath today. Congratulations.

What a performance, well worth the win. Fair play lads especially without Costello and conlon. Taught we were in trouble after the black card and Kerry got a couple scores. Kickouts are still a worry but can't be critical after that. What a day.

Excellent performance. Compare that to the same fixture last season and you can see the impact Robbie Brennan has had on this team. Ciarán Caulfield man of the match in my view. An absolute stormer from him. Ruairí Kinsella a very close second with Duke, Menton, Frayne absolutely excellent as well. To be fair, I think each player had at least a 7/10 performance today. Each time Kerry came back within striking distance (or even went in front), we settled ourselves and kicked a few scores to break their momentum. Defensively we were so much sturdier which has obviously been worked on the past two weeks. Clifford showed his quality in fits and starts but we snuffed it out well mostly.

I see a lot of statements about the fact that Kerry were missing players, completely glossing over the fact that we were missing a good 5-6 of our first choice outfield players ourselves. Makes the performance all the more impressive.

And to top it all off, Seán Boylan, the absolute gentlemen that he is, agreed to pose for a photo with my girls. What a day. Bring on the quarter final, whoever we face.

Not a hint of an "Olé" towards the end, thankfully.

Kinsella my man of the match but some great performances no doubt.. Caulfield becoming a leader on that team now.. Serious spirit developing amongst them now too..Talking to one of the starters tonight ( in the pub 😁) they said it's steady steady but their belief is growing.. Our injuries going to kill us tho.too many big players gone 🙄

anyone know how serious the conlon Costello injuries are?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,644 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Brennan said in his interview on RTÉ Radio yesterday evening that Costello should be in contention in two weeks time. Unfortunately, looks like Conlon's out for the rest of the season as a result of his injury.

yes ye were missing 5/6 guaranteed starters.. out of interest who would those missing starters if they had been available have replaced..? Ronan Jones at midfield instead of O'Nell would be one change... Matthew Costello instead of Curtis i presume would be another one… what would the others have been…?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭pipelaser

    Conlan for Curtis

    Costello for Cathal Hickey

    Jack Flynn for O'Neill

    O'Halloran for Ronan Ryan

    Jones possibly for Duke

The beauty is that, the players who are in instead of the original starters are by and large stepping up. In some cases they may be outperforming the injuried 1st team starter(but its impossible to know this obviously). I know its hard for national media and supporters outside Meath to get their heads around this, but what happened against Kerry was simply about Meath having greater squad depth(although almost getting threadbare), the phycological benifit of being a underdog(no pressure), and a self belief that minimised(or overturned) the percieved gap between the teams.

I’m of the belief now that Menton and Flynn don’t dovetail well enough. I think we have defensive vulnerabilities. O’Neill is unspectacular but by god he puts in a shift. We’ve been majorly vulnerable to fast half backs this year (Mcarthy, Lennon) just have a look at Lennons goal in the Leinster final as Flynn chases in vain. O’Neill by nature is much more defensively orientated and offers greater protection.

Brian O’Halloran for me is a stone or two light. Look at Louths goal again (I think it was burns scored.) or Dublin’s goal. His tackles are being broken too easy and personally I prefer a blockier build like a Ryan in this position. I do think corner backs are something we need more depth in. I think is our weakest position on the pitch.

A couple of lads who are the forgotten men of Meath football this year is Campo & O’Connor. It’s hard for me to see a starting slot for either now. Coffey & Kinsella are our starting 6 & 11 behind dispute at this stage, but these lads will add further strength and depth. O’Connor is interesting in such that he’s probably the fastest man in Meath football (when playing) he’s always had brilliant cameos off the bench under the old rules, and with speed now at a premium he could do some real damage against tired legs after the 50th minute. Especially on counter attacks and more space to run into.

Just a side note on Jamie Murphy - I’m a bit encouraged in a weird way by his absence since the U20s has been over. He’s always looked a bit on the doughy side to me. If Meath senior management reckon this lad needs some serious S&C before he can play for Meath it only means he has more upside than what we’ve seen already. I do expect him to be knocking hard on the door January 2025.

Kildare ladies shocked Armagh yesterday to dump them out of the championship, with Meath topping the group and playing Tipperary at home in the quarter final (a repeat of the 2019 Intermediate final). Winner of that game will play the winners of Kerry and Kildare in the semi final.

Quarter final will be against Donegal, Galway or Dublin. No easy draws at this stage but I think Galway would be the most winnable. Donegal look to have the bit between their teeth and had a walk in the park this afternoon and Dublin will surely be out for revenge if we're drawn against them.

Family commitments means I'm praying that the quarter final, whoever it's against, is on Saturday as I'll have to miss it if it's on Sunday.

Great page in todays Indo Sport re Vicki Wall, and the treatment she's getting on the pitch. Badly needed to be said.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,644 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

It's an absolute disgrace the way the rules are. She got a yellow against Kildare for the Kildare player deliberately stepping in front of her when she was at full pelt and Vikki ended up colliding with her. The rules really need changing. They still treat the players like dainty flowers who can't handle physical contact.

Galway in the quarter final. Best possible draw in my view, even though we're still going to be massive underdogs.

I think it's less to do with rules tbh. Galway a good draw. They're fairly battle weary after yesterday.

Great to be there. 40/1 seems decent.

Happy enough with that tbh. I reckon Galway expended the most energy of the 4 teams this weekend n Walsh n mc daid iirc picked up a knock.

I assume Costello will be back n conlon and Jones are gone gone?

Looking forward to tomorrow… Its very hard to call but hopefully we get a flying start! I think theres way less pressure on us then Galway, it seems to be do or die year for them. and I think we perform well in those situations. i hope the starting team stays the way it is on paper, then have Mattie coming on for a lift later on when needed. its gonna be a warm day! come on the Royal!!

Can't wait for tomorrow, very confident, nothing to lose, second match afterwards not too shabby either

I’m not confident, I never am, but while we’re massive underdogs, our odds are much narrower than the Dublin and Kerry games. All the pundits are tipping Galway and most seem to waving away our wins against Dublin and Kerry as coming as a result of the wind and as a result of injuries respectively.

We defended terribly at times against Roscommon but you could see the two weeks before the Kerry game was used to iron out a lot of those issues and we defended in packs in that game. I’d expect Robbie has been using the two weeks to analyse Galway in a similar manner. Their forwards and midfield are formidable but they appear to be weak at the back. If we can exploit that, we have a great chance.

No pressure on us tomorrow. The season would be a failure for Galway if they lose tomorrow whereas we’ve already exceeded many expectations with a view to building for next season. I hope whatever happens, the lads are given an ovation coming off the field.

I’m missing out tomorrow as my daughter has a show I’ve to attend so I’m yet to decide whether I’ll keep an eye on the score or just watch it back afterwards.
