200 people on board, reports a bit all over the place with initial reports saying Birmingham bound with 100 people

The situation looks grim here. I've read that there were a lot more people on-board but it's far too early to clarify.

I've just seen obstructed views of black smoke billowing out. I hope for survivors but fear that this one is at the edge of survivability.

Sky news saying it may have come down in a civilian area

Also the number of people potentially on the ground where it crashed. Looks to be quite a dense area and videos posted show hundreds of people around who goodness knows how many were caught up in.

Good point. Details are sketchy atm (understandably) but ye it's a densely populated area. Looks like one building involved was under construction.

There's a brief clip on Youtube, aircraft is wings level, nose up but not abnormally so, gear down, losing height, flaps do not appear to be down

Hard to see any survivors from this I'm afraid and ground casualties look certain too. Big fuel load on board.

I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Wouldn't recommend going to Twitter for any info, just clicked on one horrifying video from the scene. Won't be looking again.

One report says it landed on the canteen for a college

The data on FR24 is patchy to say the least. However, it does not show any backtrack to the end of the runway — and this can be clearly seen in the tracks from the same flight over the last few days.

Canteen of a medical college - not that it matters in terms of human loss of life, but if correct, not only does it reduce the number of hands to help in the disaster, it will have an additional mental toll on those workers too.

This may be end up being the deadliest accidental crash in history. The plane would have had full tanks of aviation fuel and that seems to have caused the massive fireball.

Flight path for take off seems to be in the direction of the city itself which is one of the largest in India with 8m inhabitants

Really feel for anyone affected by this.

First major accident involving a 787 I think?

I didn't read here first and see your post, wish I had, absolutely horrific photos on twitter of the crash site. They need to take it all down but I doubt they will. I highly recommend you do not look at twitter right now.

They confirmed it backtracked and used the full length of the 11 thousand odd feet long runway

New video showing normal take off then a total loss of power

Can't really see because of the hut in the way but, a runway overrun and FOD ingestion could be plausible given the amount of dust kicked up to the left. The RAT being deployed means something caused a loss of thrust on both engines. Whatever the cause, it's a terrible tragedy.

for roughly 9 seconds after rotation the aircraft is gaining altitude…. Then it stalls and drops.

The hut being in the way is making it difficult to see any ingestion of birds / debris…compressor stall etc…

The lack of any kind of smoke from a FOD incident is curious.

It seems to crab to the right slightly as it climbs initially, suggesting asymmetric thrust. That could suggest a fuel starvation issue that started with one engine first.

    It stalled. Plain as day.

    No idea why yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭Lorddrakul

    True, but why?

The fact that you can't see flaps deployed is also odd. The airport is more or less sea level but you'd imagine heat conditions would still mean flaps are required on take off, especially, if it was a short take off run, as had been suggested.

Actually, just saw a hi-res image from Farnborough of a 787 rapid ascent take off, and even there, with flaps set, it is hard to tell. With such grainy images from AI171, we should reserve judgement.

Video quality isn’t great. I hope it isn’t a case of flaps up instead of taking gear up after departure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,525 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

That is insane and extremely sad.

Looks like speculation is being allowed here, so engine failure and crew immediately **** down the good engine, with zero to back that up apart from pure sick speculation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,525 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

Wouldn’t make a huge difference and definitely that thing has enough power to get away from that kind of situation with two engines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭JimBobSnob

Speculation?? is it ok with you sir if we can give our observations of what we see in the video?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,150 ✭✭✭Lirange

The surviving passenger has said he heard a loud noise prior to the crash (per Reuters).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,525 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

Of course you can, but what are you seeing in that video? Flaps UP = Configuration warning system on the CAS and also aural warnings. So can you really really tell the difference between FLAPS 0 and 5 from that video?

Expert on RTE news said flaps and slats were deployed.
