I disagree. There's plenty of resistance to Trump as we've seen in California and elsewhere. Tens of millions of Americans may have voted for Trump but the country's population is about 350 million. It's not nearly enough to say that MAGA has taken over the whole place.

The Republicans may basically be a 21st century version of NSDAP but that doesn't mean they'll succeed. Hitler came to power in a country that existed for less than 15 years. The USA is 250 years old. Its institutions may have been captured by MAGA but that won't be enough for them to impose their will on the whole country, especially if blue states decided to cut off red states' handouts.

I broadly agree but don’t underestimate just how evil these MAGA fascists are

They could for example cut California off from Fed settlement network to bring chaos and destruction

And or send in the troops whom would just blindly follow orders

    Or sabotage air traffic control

Or leak the information on citizens Elon and co collected to Chinese, Russians etc

The list of 💩 they can throw at blue freedom states is endless

Just on the Red State / Blue State thing and the suggestion from Trump to block federal funding for California and Newsomes threat to stop paying Federal income tax.

I get how Trump could stop Federal funding for stuff , but how could California block Federal taxes leaving the State?

Not familiar with the process , but if I pay taxes in California , do all those taxes go to California 1st and then the Federal share gets forwarded later??

The smug bragging about all his "locations".

    Knowing Trump he would probably

Mobilise military to man every border with California and collect tarrifs on interstate commerce (and catch brown people)

Would it be wildly illegal? Yes

Would he care and would there be checks and balances to stop him? No

Half of mericans would be out celebrating “owning those libs over in California”

When I see that , my first reaction is always that he didn't write it..

    That stinks of Stephen Miller….

If some of us can be snatched off the streets without a warrant, based only on suspicion or skin color, then none of us are safe,” Newsom said. “Authoritarian regimes begin by targeting people who are least able to defend themselves. But they do not stop there.

“Trump and his loyalists, they thrive on division because it allows them to take more power and exert even more control,” he continued. “And by the way, Trump, he’s not opposed to lawlessness and violence as long as it serves him. What more evidence do we need than January 6?”

Mainstream media is pro-Trump. There's not much else with that much click potential. They've been promoting him for decades.

On the flip side, Newsom is someone who might be able to challenge MAGA in 2028. Tyrants tend to create their own worst enemies.

Media is polarised in America. Depends on what you read or listen to. He's on CNN right now giving that speech.

Frankly, I think that's what the Biden administration should have done in the first place and this whole renaming thing has been a political $$$%%show from both parties since Day 1. There wasn't exactly a major clamor in the miltary for the changes and names like Bragg and Benning have become central to Army culture on their own merit, not because of their original namesakes. Generations of troops grew up with the Benning School for Boys being the home of infantry. Most folks continue to use the old names anyway as otherwise the conversation tends to be "they are going to go to...umm.. whatever the hell they're calling Rucker these days".

That said, there hasn't been a clamoring to name them back either, so I'm not sure quite who they are trying to please barring the old-timers. They should have left it alone. Except for Liberty, that rename back to Bragg was pretty much approved of. Most everyone I know felt that Hal Moore was being poorly done by when the current administration got put back to Benning recently. On the other hand, is anyone really going to complain about Gary Gordon being a namesake despite his happening to have the same name as a Confederate officer?

I would observe that Private Bragg has about as much claim to have a base named after him as Doris Miller has to have an aircraft carrier named after him. Miller and Smalls should have been new-build destroyers, pursuant to the standard naming conventions, but the Biden administration obviously felt differently and does anyone want to put money on the naming in 2021 not being a case of pandering to the BLM movement? They really want to rename Chancellorsville 2/3 the way through its service life? Fine, pick a battlefield just as all the other cruisers are named after. It's not as if the US miltary is short on available names.

I'm hoping, just for the sake of the money, that the old signs are still in the back somewhere. I was on Cavasos yesterday, the city outside still has Fort Hood Road as the main drag leading to the base. There was some debate in Killeeen as to whether they wanted to change it, but they decided no because (a) it would cost too much money, and (b) they were kindof used to the name anyway. At least the local civilians will be happy enough.

None of the above applies to the proposed renaming of Harvey Melk which is just pure pettiness without any argument of merit at all.

"Hitler came to power in a country that existed for less than 15 years" is an absurd statement.

These people have an amazing propensity not to learn. If he was telling himself that he deserves to be deported, I wouldn't be surprised.

What I find more revealing is your headstrong position on comparing Trump to Biden, rahter than what Trump is doing right now. This reads more like you are unwilling to back up or support Trumps actions, so your best bet is just to compare him to a former president.

Trump supporters are eerily quiet these days, and when they do say anything, it follows the line of "Yeah but Bden…".

Not the strongest proclamation of the orange one.

Somewhat on the subject, what are your thought on his speech yesterday at Bragg and the behavior of the army (booing Biden and MSM, etc.)? Should the army be partisan? I’d have thought it a major no-no.

Does he keep making the same speech, like he’s at a campaign rally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,561 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Has he ever done anything different? His public speaking is dire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,144 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Newsom could definitely be presidential material. The kind of leadership the Democrats need

IMO the entire bloody thing is lunacy, and the current moves should be taken in that context. My position is identical to that I stated on this very thread 700 pages ago, before Trump came back into office and his administration started renaming things back again.

The issue with the Soccer - Both the current Club Competition and the World Cup next year is that you'd imagine that a big component of the ticket sales would have been targeted at the immigrant communities as well as hoping tourists come from overseas.

Hard to imagine that a load a South Americans (and those from elsewhere) regardless of there immigration status are going to want to put themselves in a Stadium where there will almost certainly get harassed and asked for their "papers" by ICE twats.

Attendance is going to be very very poor.

Empty stadia will look sh!te on TV..

I'd be **** it if I was FIFA ahead of next year it could turn into a disaster. The way he's going he'll be twice as mad next year regarding borders. Some fans will be crossing between the 3 countries multiple times as the tournament goes on. I'd be seriously looking at my plans if I was hoping to head to the WC.

Exactly. From the Democrats being listless and leaderless Trump has effectively created a foil for himself.

trump will give the National Guard and the Marines free tickets to fill the stadiums

It seems that Hegseth may have spoken publicly again about something the White House would prefer not to be spoken about. His reported latest gaffe is that the mobilization of the Nat Gd units in California and the Marines is part of a Trump copybook plan to see if it works and, if so, it will be repeated by Trump in other US states.

They hosted a world cup in Qatar and plan to host one in Saudi. As bad as things are I really do not think the US is going to struggle to host one.

Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, revealed that the raids that sparked the violent LA riots were not for immigration purposes.

Homan explained that the raids that took place in downtown Los Angeles on Friday were part of a criminal investigation into a money laundering scheme and cartel activity.' (Sex Trafficking.)

    It wasn’t an immigration raid.

It was to service of three criminal warrants at locations based on a large criminal conspiracy that ICE is investigating,' Homan on MSNBC.

In other words, the outrage over ICE raids that supposedly sparked the LA riots is totally manufactured.

There were no violent federal immigration agents hauling away peaceful immigrant families etc.

As usual, the left’s entire violence-justifying narrative is a tissue of lies.

Is that a gaffe, though? I would have assumed that to be the case regardless.

Near as I can tell, this is basically a win-win-win for Trump, since they have been apparently scrupulous about remaining within the lawful authorities of Title 10 forces.

    1. Things blow over without much more trouble, ICE continues its immigration enforcement operations. Win for Trump.
    2. Things blow over after moderate rioting and the like, almost certainly going to happen in Democrat-run cities if it happens anywhere. In any case, handled purely by state authorities, with or without the National Guard. Cue talking points of "Democrats being violent against enforcing federal law." Win for Trump, bigger win if National Guard required. And ICE likely continues its enforcement operations.
    3. Things don't blow over without getting so far out of control that the state authorities can no longer handle matters, even with EMACs (Basically loans of personnel from other jurisdictions and states) and they are forced to request federal assistance. ICE presumably continues its enforcement operations. Win for Trump.

The only way I see this not coming out in Trump's favour is if Trump (Or Homan) decides to stand down. Anyone want to place any bets on this happening?

Will it utterly terminate chances of Republicans in those areas in future elections? Absolutely. But who was the last Republican mayor of LA? The loss in the big scheme of things does not appear to be major for Republicans. Will it affect chances in Republican areas in swing states where they may not like to see current ICE operations being conducted as they are? Possibly, but I'm thinking it's a bet the Republicans are willing to take on the national level. https://www.newsweek.com/donad-trump-democrats-immigration-poll-2083918

As backward as Qatar is, I don't think they arrested foreign supporters for anything other than public order offences? I would not bet on the same thing happening in the US.
