New RTÉ Reality soap "The Ryan Line Chancing It All"

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

That wig and beard are distractingly bad, like they came out of a Christmas cracker.

Nothing to do with Gerry Ryan except that's it's his son.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Probably not the greatest title for the thread, I am just pointing out how his children are working in a similar fashion. It will be interesting to see how long before they are given a TV series of their own.

I can't imagine many one man shows getting so much publicity. (The show got a full 2 page spread in one of the Newspaper magazines a few weeks ago).

I have some admiration for rex ryan , he set up his own theatre and seems to be more underground than mainstream

If he wasn't rex ryan you could say he's done the years of groundwork and deserves a shot at tv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Oh yeah look this is true, but there are plenty of others out there that are similar and would never get the kind of promotion that they Ryans get. Both his sister got on the late late about their podcast.

I wish the Ryans the best but lets face it they have privileges that I don't think others would have, who might be doing similar or better work.

Rex Ryan and Gerry Hutch lived close by. I'd say there's a good chance Rex knocked around with Gerry's kids, they're around the same age. That was probably his in.

On the one hand you could argue that his name has opened doors for him but at the same time his dad is gone a long time now so there's a limit to how much that carries these days (outside of RTE who act like they are in debt to the Ryan's).

A one man show about Gerry hutch at the SCC is a fairly arthouse esoteric type project of limited appeal so I do admire the confidence to take it on. I actually hope it's successful for him

It's helpful when you get a full interview on one of their largest radio shows, along with an article in the Irish Independent.

Hard to imagine others being afforded such promotion, who are working on similar projects.

Again I hope it works out but clearly he has time and money to do this type of work along with getting premium promotions.

It’s a dreadfully unstable and insecure worklife that he’s pursuing, regardless of any leg up he might get by dint of his late father.

Given what most people know now about Gerry Ryan, I don’t necessarily think his offspring could really be regarded as privileged. I’d say they’ve had their own struggles over the years.

There's probably a thousand struggling actors out there with a bigger body of work than Rex Ryan ever had, but unfortunately don't have the famous surname to open doors for them…..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,376 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

He's been at this a long time, are you suggesting doors should never open for him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I don't think anyone is suggesting that the door not be open for any of the Ryan family.

We are just pointing out that they're are plenty of theater people out their that are working hard and find it hard to get publicity, the same goes for many podcast creators, but some how RTÉ and the Indo seem to be able to promote the Ryans.

No potential Rex's one man show is deserving of the publicity over others and potential so is Lottie's and Bonnie's podcast. Who is to say.

But to suggest some how that the Ryans aren't partly getting publicity due to who their father was, seems a bit naïve at the same time.

Yep. Another Ryan and another example: Yesterday's Examiner:

"My Wedding Day with Bonnie Ryan: 'We had a Jameson stand, the whiskey my dad loved'"

Think it's pretty crass to title the thread Gerry "Chancer" Ryan, considering he's been dead for over 15 years and you just want to complain about nepotism which is nothing new in the showbiz world and most walks of life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,376 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

You're very wrong , his post implied every other actor deserves a shot. My response was rex has been at this for years so why shouldn't he have a shot , he's also done it all himself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

But you don't see our point, that Rex has a name, he has money and he comes from money.

As we've pointed out there are plenty of people who have had one man shows and podcasts that have not been given the opportunities that Rex and his Sisters have been given. All of whom you could say "have been at this for years so why shouldn't they have a shot".

This isn't the first time that Rex has been promoted by the media, while it seems to be a bigger promotion than before.

By the way this isn't to say that I don't hope the play or the podcasts are successes, I wish them all well, as I do to anyone who is trying to make their way in media or theatre.

It looks to me like the media are using him for clicks then he's using them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

and he's using the Monk's name and I am using his father's name, all good fodder at the end of the day, if only I didn't change the title of the thread!

Well he's hardly going to use the **** popes name is he if it's about gerry hutch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Well in fairness Gerry Ryan's son as the Pope … that could be his next play … "There was a church in our area, so it seemed like a good progression, seeing Ireland through the eyes of the Pope, really got me thinking"

This is true, Rex Ryan has been theatre acting for a long time. I have seen him perform in the Fringe Festival probably over 10 years ago now and he was fantastic. Being an actor is not for the faint of heart and not well paid so if he can get coverage for his play and sell a few more tickets, fair play to him. People banging on about him being Gerry Ryan's son are failing to recognise that if anyone else was doing a one man play about Gerry "The Monk" Hutch, a career criminal who ran for a seat in the Dáil and almost won it, they would have received just as much coverage, especially from the Sunday World. Gerry Ryan is not the main Gerry in this story.

Has to be the worst fake beard and wig combo ever - like something you would see in a school play

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,084 ✭✭✭✭briany

Yes, it seems really strange. Unless it's a deliberate avant garde type of thing, like the phoney wig and beard symbolise Gerry losing his sense of self in the second act of the play….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,517 ✭✭✭chicorytip

I think there's a reason for that. He's not very good at what he does.

Great. The world really needs more RTE nepo babies.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

    Nepo ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Nepo-baby is the new term for stars that have had family in the business before e.g. "Drew Barrymore comes from a long line of Nepo-babies"

    Nepo is short for nepotism
