I was warned today and a post removed from the thread for saying that I recognised a incident posted by another poster - in violation of the anecdotes rule apparently. Maybe we should provide signed statements witnessed by a member of the Gardai or a solicitor?

I didn't bother responding to the mod in question, but ye really aren't helping yourselves with petty, pedantic nonsense.

Ultimately ye can do what you will as it's a private site, volunteers giving their time, and all the other usual justifications offered but as others have said above, it's very clear that some posters are given a much freer hand on the thread when all they seem to do is stir/bait and otherwise offer very little to the discussion

Maybe it's someone's notion of "balance" to the conversation that allows it (?) but it's very obvious if you read the posts objectively.

I've been here a long time but if there was another site that offered the same content I would have long ago moved on.

There are lots of posts and none breaking rules on both sides of the fence .

We have all had our fair share of moderation on that thread . Not just one side although I admit I used to think a while back it was mainly Pro immigration posters getting warned.

I guess we can all be a bit blinkered sometimes !

Do you want people who don't agree with Anti immigration posters banned from posting ?

Anecdotes are not permitted in the thread. That's a long standing rule. Whinging about it in feedback has already been done and it isn't changing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,306 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

And it's that arrogant condescending attitude that just backs up my point.

    Thanks for that.

You're welcome. Perhaps instead of complaining you'd provide examples now of these posts we're supposedly missing? That always helps to guide us.

    Thanks.

I got a 2 week ban for saying a post lacked critical thought 😂

Meanwhile a mod is running amok in that thread and nothing is done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,306 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

So exactly HOW does moderation work? Serious question.

Ye don't read the whole thread which is fair enough in a busy one, but do you read back maybe a page or two when considering whether to action a post to get the context of what led to the "objectionable" post, or do you just judge the specific post in question?

What prompts the review in the first place? I'm presuming reports from others? Are any records kept of "serial reporters" and the quality of their own posts or if they had prior engagement with the aforementioned "objectionable" post?

What sort of onboarding or training is given for mods? Actually, what criteria is used to select them in the first place?

Id be very surprised if pro immigration posters got warned much, if at all. But anti immigration posters get banned.

I got banned for posting about irish heritage. My post was in response to another poster, pro immigration. They continued to post on the subject, no warnining no ban.

The mod that banned me tried to tell me i was wrong about my point on irish heritage.

Pretty much proving that I wasn't being banned for any rule breaking. I was being banned for having a different view of irish heritage than said mod.

Its a safe space for left leaning posters. If you cant see that then...

Ah, so it's fine for you to be condescending and constantly throw digs at mods but when one tells you that a longstanding rule isn't for changing regardless of the whining and complaining about it then it's an arrogant attitude. Thanks for clarifying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,306 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

If you can't respond to a reasonably put post with reasonable questions then that says more about you than me really.

Clearly you're not familiar with the idea that as a mod you should be setting an example of the behaviour you would expect yourself but fair enough.

As for me being "condescending", perhaps read back over your first post in this exchange above.

Don't worry though. We can leave it there. You've more than made my point for me here.

And I am very confident the majority of people reading this know who you are talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

You called me a dick while banning me for supposedly attacking the poster not the post.

Which i thought was hilariously ignorant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,709 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

In fairness, 'don't be a dick' has been a rule here from year dot

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 15,814 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

"Don't be a dick" is the basic rule that Boards.ie was built on. It was perfectly fine for a long time and worked well, until the eternally offended became offended by it. Around the same time people started complaining the Prison Forum was too mean to sitebanned posters (who were usually being dicks).

So, Prison toned down and "don't be a dick" was sidelined.

What has happened in the years since then is people were being dicks without really breaking any other rules, but making the place pretty unpleasant in general. So we've decided to bring the rule back to the fore. It now covers everything. And in fairness, people know when they're being dicks, they've just been getting away with it for years.

The prison forum was nothing to do with sensitivity on the part of some, but everything to do with it being a disgrace of moderating standards generally.

The phase : 2 wrongs don't make a right probably sum it up - and I would be the furthest from the offended type you refer to. I didn't even frequent it much because it just struck me as childish and a bit sad really and certainly not a good advert for this site or how it was run.

Toning it down as you say was no loss at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,171 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

I have had warnings . I know other posters who have been banned. So you can't say it is all anti immigration posters that get banned .

There are much less pro posters on that thread . A few who are posting are not there that long just recent months. And we have to be careful what and how we say things just as much as anyone else .

At some stage unless people dial it down and do what the mods are asking them to do they will get warned .

And bans now mount up .

And with all due respect none of us can say that we are always right however much we think we are when the blood is up .

Yet feedback looks back at "old Boards," with rose tinted glasses and it's only recent moderation that is terrible 🤷🏻‍♀️

Actually, what criteria is used to select them [mods] in the first place?

    Desperation?

I'm beginning to think there is some sort of a hierarchy in the CA mods team now. 'Okay guys, I suggest we start to use 'being be a dick', instead of the dumbass 'uncivil' stuff we've been using - 'Sounds good Alpha mod, let's do it'

There's a whole hive-mind of people out there watching/analysing what's happening - you do know that, right?

It horriific and fascinating viewing, all at the same time, as the site eats itself alive

The eternally offended appear to be mods and people reporting posts. Bans should be solely for bullying of some description after a bit of investigation or spamming.

    😬

    This thread is gas

Has a serious bang of "I'm telling teacher on you".

This thread has posters getting offended all the time and proclaiming that other people are the entirely offended.

You really can't make this stuff up as satire anymore.

Others outraged at the mere presence of a dissenting voice in current affairs.

Also I see feedback isn't safe from the rise of bullshit conspiracy theories either.

Most self proclaimed free speech absolutists are giant big whiny snowflakes!

Funny! The mods are the ones most on the receiving end of abuse.

The rules of the forum are clear for all. That some choose to report and some don't is down to personal choice. The moderators can't be helped responsible if one "side" decides not to report but the other "side" does.

Moderators do, in general, keep an overall eye on threads. But they cannot possibly see every post. I don't know if there are many posters who have the time to see every post.

Also one "side" might get warned more because their language or posting might be more aggressive than another "side".

Both "sides" are warned. Last week a number of people were sitebanned. People from both"sides". People who rarely agreed on anything were sitebanned on the same day.

People argue on the internet! It's not exclusive to Boards.ie. What appears to be exclusive to Boards.ie is visible moderators.
