Agree completely with you. The trouble is that if we opened something similar to that in CA, the negatives you mention above would happen imo. Which is why I asked for posters to use the Cool Vids, Pics & Links forum rather than clutter the current thread with memes and gifs.

I'm not against a bit of craic and banter at all contrary to popular beliefs😅

Francie, the moderators decide what will remain on the site. Not you. If you're not offended and don't see a problem but the moderator does the post will be warned and/or removed as decided by the mods.

It is an open forum. Anyone is free to engage. And anyone is free to report whatever they want. We are not going to limit what posters are allowed report. We are not going to limit who is allowed report.

I've said it 3 times now. It's not going to change. Move on.

The Political satire thread was in the Cool Vids, Pics and Links forum but it was closed at the end of October.

Is there another thread there for Political stuff ?

No. I asked @New Home a couple times could we reopen the political satire thread and he said no.

Not sure if it was generating too many spurious reports or what, there was an awful lot of unfunny stuff in it but not much that crossed a line into overly offensive, from what I saw anyway

I do like the idea of a Specific thread for memes/GIFs/humour pics etc. to keep it away from the main threads, in Soccer we implemented a Humour thread there with it's own set of rules and a 24 hour ban on any chat. It might be something worthwhile to look into and to look at the rules within the soccer forum thread as a guideline.

Fair point. Will take a look at the soccer forum one and chat about it with the other mods in CA and see what they think. It's a good suggestion from MisterAnarchy in fairness and the forum could do with something at least somewhat light hearted.

Might be worth asking New Home as well so as to anticipate potential pitfalls.

Im doubtful if much of the content of the previous thread would qualify as light hearted, or even satirical. It was political warfare using images to spread abuse of political figures.

No worse than what's going on in the current trump thread, tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,272 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

It was but in fairness it was pretty much one sided.

There could be 6 or 7 posts in a row by anti Trumpers and then someone would post an anti Democrat meme and it was like a red rag to a bull, or whacking a hornets nest.

The anti Trumpers would feel the need to instantly retaliate by posting flurry of any old crap memes they could find.

    It was laughable really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,630 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    That's a questionable claim.

But regardless, the Trump thread or indeed any CA thread doesnt advertise itself as being light hearted. So hard to see how the same type of content in meme form would create a lighter mood.

Further, just because something is chucked into meme form shouldn't mean an exemption from CA and general Boards rules, other than being able to dump memes. As noted above, a chat with the mod of the closed thread would be instructive.
(Just mentioning that to pre-empt someone on the thread suggesting why does the thread need to be moderated at all.)

Well maybe you laughed at that because there weren't many to be had from the memes. And I dont think any one side had a monopoly of unfunny ones or "a flurry of any old crap memes they could find".

Either way, you are confirming it was a hornets nest rather than lightening the mood.

But what's the issue if there is no chat allowed?it's not like you are going in to the thread to have a reasonable discussion. It's keeping that stuff out of the main threads,

Like MA example there, does it matter if there is 7 posts about trump then 1 about Dems, then 7 about trump. It's like in the Soccer forum where there is just as much tribalism, some may find some funny if it's about the "other side" and vice versa, not everyone is going to find everything funny, afterall humour is subjective, and posters do not have to look at the thread if they don't like that sort of stuff, also meaning you don't have to see it on the normal threads.

But as I said, it's more about keeping contained in one thread, with it's own rule set, and not clogging up the discussion threads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,630 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

I was responding to the suggestion that one of the merits of it would be to have something light hearted in CA. The tribalism \ abuse to funny ratio would be even worse in CA given the intensity of the debates.
The issue with 7 in a row isn't whether they come from one side or another, but whether they are even attempts at humour or satire. Or just any old text or speech excerpt or scurrilous rumour or insult wrapped up in meme form.
And it could encompass not just American politicians but Irish public figures too.

"Keeping stuff out of the main" thread is a different basis to bring it in, just as long as no one is under any illusions about the type of "stuff" that will be there :)

What's the difference in banned and site banned, one temporary and one permanent?

Depends on where you're seeing that, but yes, generally so.

Each account is assigned a role. When you first register the account is automatically assigned "Registered User". When you become a moderator the role is manually changed by the admin team.

When a poster is permanently sitebanned, the role can be manually changed to "Sitebanned". It's not always done but Mike has recently started to use it. It's something we probably should use more often.

Time to put childish things aside.

I don't think its quiet enough in here at all at all. Theres still way to many antagonistic people on here who don't share my particular ideologies, and for my plans of world domination to succeed, I need the site numbers to be way down to just a few hundred. That way i can assert some sort of control. Could the current mods not stop with all the yapping, get back to doing their jobs properly, and start permanently banning people in their droves, before finally banning themselves?

    Thank you.

    BRING BACK BEASTY!

Some posts deleted. I don't see the benefit of posting a screenshot of an 8 month old post that is no longer on the site.

The double standards between forums, and the enforcement of "site rules" is a complete joke right across this site.

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,139 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

Would you like to provide some particular examples @sligeach ?

Go into the immigration thread. Review the anti immigration posts getting warnings/bans and then review the pro immigration posts that go unimpeded.

Its quite obvious that its being censored, sorry moderated inline with the moderators personal views.

Pro immigration posters can wax lyrical with anecdotes. They can thinly veil attack posters etc. All childish stuff that should be allowed both ways as it in no way merits bans or warnings to begin with.

But its glaringly obvious to anyone who cares to look that the overbearing moderating only leans one way.

One poster in particular is just there to fight with people. Personal abuse, snarky comments all an attempt to wind people up and nothing is ever done about him.

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,139 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

If you'd like to report specific posts that haven't been actioned and tag me I'll look into it.

I have no interest in wading through an entire thread!

Sligeach mentioned "across the entire site" so I'd also be interested to hear of problems in forums other than CA.

Post #740 in this thread falls foul of "attack the post, not the poster".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,389 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Im banned from the thread. I was ironically banned for supposedly "being a dick" which is language very unbecoming of a morally superior mod.

But you wont need to wade. Just read the most recent page. If you do it from an unbiased position youll spot the glaringly obvious very quickly.

I was warned today and a post removed from the thread for saying that I recognised a incident posted by another poster - in violation of the anecdotes rule apparently. Maybe we should provide signed statements witnessed by a member of the Gardai or a solicitor?

I didn't bother responding to the mod in question, but ye really aren't helping yourselves with petty, pedantic nonsense.

Ultimately ye can do what you will as it's a private site, volunteers giving their time, and all the other usual justifications offered but as others have said above, it's very clear that some posters are given a much freer hand on the thread when all they seem to do is stir/bait and otherwise offer very little to the discussion

Maybe it's someone's notion of "balance" to the conversation that allows it (?) but it's very obvious if you read the posts objectively.

I've been here a long time but if there was another site that offered the same content I would have long ago moved on.
