Public pay scales - starting point

I am almost at the end of the process to accept a niche IT position in the Garda. They seem eager for me to start as soon as possible.

I am coming from 20 years experience in the private sector.

Is there any precedence / leeway to negotiate starting on a higher point on the salary scale instead of point 1? Would this be a question for HR or the person that I will report to?

I started in the public sector in 2008. I also had 20 years of IT experience in the private sector. Once I showed them my payslips, I started at the top of the grade I was joining. I don't know if things have changed since, though.

It's point 1 you'll start at. If you were coming from another public sector or civil service org it would be different.

That's the official answer.

The only way to find out if either management or HR have any wiggle room is to ask. For a specialist role, for the guards - ask. The rules can be different, though it cannot be stated publically.
