Actually, taking the whole cake situation seriously, by far the best post parkrun 'carb reloading' fare has to be Vicarstown. They not only have a very friendly core team, but they have quite the spread afterwards, if people were to travel there remember to bring some physical money for a donation towards the next weeks offering.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I only volunteered for the first time ever yesterday. I've done 49 parkruns so I told myself I wouldn't allow myself get to 50 until I volunteered at least once!!

My poor excuse for not volunteering previously is that I have a young son and so sometimes my only chance to get exercise during the week is Saturday morning (and it's often with him in a running buggy). Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering (I did timekeeper) and it was nice to get to know the core team better at my local parkrun. I am planning on volunteering next week as well ☺️

    Well done you!!

I was something similar 37 parkruns before I volunteered, I’m now at 267 parkruns with 138 volunteer credits.

You know you can volunteer and run/participate as well, as some volunteer roles allow that, such as, Pre-Event Setup, Post Event Close Down, First Timers Welcome, Event Day Course Check, parkwalker, Tail Walker and if your local event have pacers you can do that too.

Volunteering is so rewarding, now you’ve done it once, you’ll be hooked.

Loughmacrory parkrun east of Omagh and Lurgan Park parkrun near Craigavon both started today.

    This too shall pass.

Don't be hard on yourself. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future. Particularly if you can get the kid involved in the junior parkrun. You can get a lot of volunteer credits volunteering at juniors

    In case you weren't aware

They posted this morning that they got volunteers so it'll go ahead as normal

i pulled the timekeepers when RD a few years ago due to lack of volunteers. HQ had no problem with it, but I understood that the rules have since changed and it is now mandatory to have timekeepers. If no timekeepers, the event is meant to cancel??

Yeah, as far as I know that's the directive now. You can go ahead without marshals, but not timekeepers

Don't be. I'm at 66 parkruns with 12 volunteers - I only ever do pacing.

I don't think you can go ahead without marshells, at least none as I understand it.

My local St Annes off the top of my head has 11 marshelling spots (I should know this - 50 of my 66 parkruns are at St Annes😬). On some weeks where there is a lack of volunteers they are posted at the key spots which are required but not all 11 are. They have said before that they cannot go ahead without marshels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭Duzzie

unfortunately that happens. I've been to single lap courses and not seen a single marshal. Just think about that from a first timers perspective, going around by yourself, not seeing another person from start to finish. Not very encouraging

I know Inch beach is an out n back 1 marshell course but thats an exception. Didn't know it can go ahead without marshel though. As far as I was concerned each course had a few spots that were required and the others were good to have but not necessary to go ahead.

Issue is marshelling takes so long as does tailwaker. At least with some roles like event course check, pre event set up and pacing you can be out of there once you scan in.

Was pacing 21 minutes at St Annes yesterday and did my usual 2 mile warmup (plus drills, activation, stretching and strides) and 1½mile cooldown. Was at the post run coffee place just as tailwalker was only finishing.

Spot on, I don't think it should happen but it can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,680 ✭✭✭✭flazio

A lot of small rural parkruns like Mountbellew Forest and Portumna tend to just have RD, timekeepers X2, a token distributor, a barcode scanner and a tail walker. Courses are marked by arrows.

    This too shall pass.

Maybe just forfeit your parkrun running credit. Pacing is a fudge for volunteering especially if a location struggles for volunteer jobs that take longer. I pace and when I finish if required scan barcodes, sort tokens and or close down the event. If doing time keeper or another role I'll get my run in later or run to event.

We have planty of pacers who have never done any other volunteer role, it does get noticed

I couldn't care less about the volunteer credit - just like helping people get a PB since its only every few months/training block or so that I get one.

"It does get noticed"?, pacing is still a nice thing to do. I'm sure RD's would rather people pace once every 4 weeks then not volunteer at all. Not like they would say no to volunteers - regardless of role.

People go to parkrun for different things - community, fitness, time trialing, etc. I go mainly just to test what shape I am in. I suppose it doesn't bother me if its not on - plenty of races or graded meetings I can enter but I understand that for some its their only 'official' timed race and that its very important that its on.

Parkwalk is more of a useless role then pacing. Tailwaker exists so if anything a parkwalk credit is a lot more disingenuous then pacing if you care about the volunteer credits.

Didn't know pacers got a credit for volunteering - doesn't really seem right to me tbh

Parkrun is not a race. It's never a race. Time trial at most but nobody wins or loses against other participants.

    This too shall pass.

Would my UK parkrun barcode work in Ireland? I've over 30 UK parkruns but none in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,601 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Yep. You can use your barcode anywhere. It's not limited to a specific country ☺️

For example, I did a parkrun in Wales with my "Irish parkrun barcode" last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,249 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Yes, of course. Any parkrun anywhere in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭BP_RS3813

Race/run/PB attempt - all the same really when it comes to parkrun - A chance to get a PB. Its obviously not a race however what I was trying to say is its most peoples only officially timed run/event. For some however it can be a little mini race between friends.

    Parkrun barcode is universal.

No different to Tail Walker or Park Walker, you get a run credit and a volunteer credit. As a former RD, I think a credit for both is a positive

As a runner who's never bothered with a parkrun, stuff like this would discourage me even more. If I wanted that level of petty scorekeeping I'd get on the neighbourhood Whatsapp group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,680 ✭✭✭✭flazio

It's supposed to be a fun jog around your local neighbourhood, not training for a place on Team Ireland's plane to LA 2028.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭BP_RS3813

    'Fun' is subjective.

I find falling to the floor, legs full of lactic acid and panting for breath after an 800m track race fun. Doubt most people would agree. Equally many people who just jog around in a ½hour chatting would find that fun, I probably wouldn't.

Thats why parkrun is so great - its inclusive of everyone. The fast 16 minute time trialers racing each other and the casual morning jogger.

The idea that parkrun is only people who jog around and chat at parkrun is preposterous. It was originally created as a time trial. Should elite athletes like Nick Griggs not be allowed to turn up at parkrun and run sub 14 whilst setting a record. Faster guys/girls are allowed use it as a time trial or training session.

I've done a lot of parkruns. And it's this kind of judgy gatekeeping petty boll0x that pisses people off. Get away with that sh1te. I'll run parkrun any way I like and you can go fart.
