I'm trying to visualise rugby international fans being put out if they missed the winter Olympics opening ceremony. "I'm raging, I'm stuck here watching France v Ireland slogging it out when I could be yawning at a winter Olympics opening ceremony. On the telly". I'm not buying it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,066 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Not Irish fans, but the Olympics is on in Italy and France would be big competitors in it.

It’s to do with France Televisions having the rights to both and not wanting them to clash.

As I said elsewhere just because the Winter Games are a non event here it doesn’t mean other countries see them the same way.

Guess they don't want Loose Women competing against the 12.30 news. It should be shown at the same time as Itv.

Except it's only a pageant, not an actual competitive event. Put them on two channels, give rugby immune people something to watch live. It's about money, they want the max ad revenue from both, hence the separation.

Of course they do. And the olympics (even winter) is a bigger draw than the rugby, so it makes sense.

Had to register and all sorts to use VM Play tonight. When did that happen? Also see VM4 is on Play. When did that happen also? I'd had a username and password for virginmediatelevision.ie website, from ages ago, but that wasn't recognised.

Same on the Apple TV app, was forced into the sign on screen and couldn’t skip.

Looked like a bit of a pain on first sight but once you have the app on phone or tablet it's fairly painless. App looks good, the addition of 4 is positive, do many watch it. The improvements in the RTEplayer and VMplay show the importance and future for broadcasters of streaming, every programme announcement has "and the *** player".

Virgin Media Four has a very low amount off viewers but Virgin still make a profit on the advertising.

At around 0.7% share, the channel has little costs. The only channel not making a profit is VMTV1, both 2 (Channel 6 ltd) and 3 (Cullen ltd) both make profit. VMTV is doing very well tbh.

VMTV1 is not making a profit because it’s the only channel they make programming for, apart from live sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,235 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Pretty much, also from what I can gather the VMTV2 live sports coverage is fairly basic. Though I wonder if Live Sports rights comes from VMTV one (TV3 Network Ireland Ltd) and not Channel 6 Ltd. Would be interesting to know if they will ever fully merge? I haven't seen it happen.

I used to be able to watch Virgin TV on my Mac computer. Unable sign in or register for the past few days. Still works on the Ipad Ap though

Virgin Media 4 just contains repeats of whats been shown a few days earlier on the other channels. Like the other channels they have - it has no clear identity.

Virgin Media More's daytime schedule is now the same "classic" Six Nations and old Messi matches on loop for the past year or so. The viewers for that channel must be in the hundreds.

Possibly doesn't help that MORE isn't on Sky or Saorview, its really just a holding channel for Virgin Media's TV offering. Does it carry advertising?

VM More doesn’t show any advertising. It does show some extra live sport and some dramas before they reach other VM channels. Other then that it’s wall to wall repeats.

More does have a purpose though - it’s an outlet on which they can screen programmes/events exclusively on VM cable. It basically grew out of the old VMTV Sport channel when they no longer had enough sports rights for a full time sport channel. Don’t know if they’re really using it much in that manner any more though.

What Four brought to the party other than more space to show The Chase I don’t know.

They could do a better job of promoting the content on VM More when it is new dramas or premiere of foreign imports.
I get the weekly 'Play' email and most of the time the focus is on streaming content from Netflix etc you need to sub for.

    Are they non-ITV dramas?

If its only the major ITV dramas really they should be highlighted on VM1 or potential VM2, they aren't really exclusives.

It's a mix, some of them are ITV dramas, some of it ITV co-productions (eg Murder in Provence) which first aired on streamers elsewhere, some Australian stuff, and some French.
Main point really is that if it's the first run of a series on VM whether VM More or VM1 they should be advertising them more prominently - instead of focusing on a Netflix series (eg Sirens). Anybody with VM has VM More but not ITV.

I think they were doing that kind of promotion of More as a 'first see' option when it came out first, but they seemed to give that up fairly quickly, and it's just sitting there now, largely unseen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,156 ✭✭✭iseegirls

VM More did show all the episodes of Snowpiercer (Prod company including ITV studios) every weekday at 9pm for the past few weeks which was something at least.

They do show programmes soon after they drop on ITVX. It's maybe some sort of agreement they have, in that they can't show on VM1,2,3,4 unless it's been shown on ITV1-4 first perhaps - but VM More is ok showing it.

They weirdly showed the first 2 episodes of Fear The Walking Dead soon after launched in July 2022, but never returned. That's quite odd.

They still might be better off removing the the very few classic sports bits because they've shown Man Utd v Benfica from the 1968 final nearly 200 times now. And just focus on those 3-4 hours and make them feel quality or supreme.

I’ve split off the Club World Cup posts, I’m afraid I don’t see what the connection with VMTV was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭deezell

None, the connection was with fellow posters, just to tip off the sports minded ones. It was a point of information, like a comment you'd make to your mates, not a discussion topic. I appreciate these nuggets when others post them. It's not dodgy either, it's free, and probably explains why no VM or saorview channels have any matches, and there are a few tasty ones.

I think one of the things that has happened is that VMTV has very little to offer in the last decade. Their line up is massively reduced while they have more TV channels!

Below are the 4 Sound and Vision commissions from the last round

    Misinformation Nation

    Try!

    Infraction

Eating with the Enemy - The Dinner Party

Misinformation Nation sounds massively like a very quick VMTV in-house production (the production company being Virgin Media) with 75% of the budget coming from Sound and Vision, question on weather this is a news / current affair programme disguised as media literacy to gain access to the fund. (72k per episode!).

Infraction is the only Drama with a total budget of 7m with just 7% of the funding coming from Sound and Vision, most like a co-pro.

And finally a spin off to the Eating with the Enemy programme from before!

But little in terms of content outside of their usual News and Sport.

Do they still pay circa 10m per year to ITV studios or is that a maximum amount of they take all the programming they can from them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,235 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I think the deal is a certain amount of hours content for x amount of money, could be €15m?, and after that a first refusal on any other ITV studios productions. I think they also have a deal with Fremantle?

It will be interesting to see if they even mention the move of Coro St and Emmerdale to 8pm Monday - Friday and what they plan to replace them with in September. Interest to see if RTÉ move Fair City following that move.

Emmerdale and Coronation Street won’t move to their new slots till January so Virgin Media have a bit of time to decide what to do. I suspect when the time comes they will go for the least imaginative replacement option possible.
