Does anyone know a provider in ireland that would cover me for cancelling a holiday following death or serious illness of a family member not travelling..so you couldn't go because you would be expected to instead attend the funeral and be with loved ones

You'd need to check the wording on the policies. Try a broker.

I'd expect most travel to cover this but, as stated check the wording or, phone the insurer and ask them. It seems very specific, if the person who dies is terminally ill when you take out the policy then may be excluded.

In the past, with Aer Lingus I received a refund for a flight booked for that reason, simply had to send in a copy of the Death Cert, it will vary by airline/hotel etc.

I checked one insurer and this is there wording, its what I would expect…

    You are covered for:

    Cancellation

    1. The death, Bodily Injury, or Illness of You, Your Travelling Companion, any person with whom You have arranged to reside temporarily during your Trip, Your Close Relative, or Your Close Business Associate.

Just keep a watch on any exclusions or caveats that will attach to a claim.

Our insurance doesn't cover anyone wha had a terminal diagnosis before we travel. I would imagine that would be the same clause on most policies.

Any travel insurance I've had over the years always had this cover - but as others have said, with limitations on pre-existing conditions or things you knew about at the time of taking out cover (how they'd go about proving you knew, or you'd prove you didn't, I have no idea, but it's a get-out clause for them)

My current insurance includes the following clauses

    You are covered for:
    Cancellation

    1. The death, Bodily Injury, or Illness of You, Your Travelling
Companion, any person with whom You have arranged to
reside temporarily during your Trip, Your Close Relative, or
      Your Close Business Associate

    General Exclusions

    A. Claims arising from circumstances or facts known to You and
which were not declared to Us upon request and accepted in
    writing by Us when:
    • applying for this insurance or
    • at any time prior to the commencement of the Period of
    Insurance or
    • booking Your Trip or any element of any Trip or
    • the commencement of any Trip.

The cover is from Mapfre, via brokers Peopl - previously I was with Blue (can't remember who the cover was with, possibly Mapfre as well), and before that I had a couple of years with Multi Trip

Insureandgo, chill, blue are all underwritten by mapfre and offer this cover. If the cause of cancellation was know prior to booking trip or policy then it won't be covered.
