The victim is an Algerian man who was stabbed near the Rosie Hackett bridge around 4:30pm this afternoon (Monday).

He is reported as being seriously ill. Gardai have a suspect in custody.

This is somewhat out of the ordinary, a stabbing in the daytime in quite a busy area on a bank holiday Monday. There are very few details at the minute, it isn't clear if it was a random attack, a mugging, or if the victim knew his attacker.

are we going to have a thread every time there's a serious crime committed? May be better to avoid pointless speculation eh?

Mod: Can we stick to what's reported and as usual avoid pointless speculation and stereotyping

Verification that the man under arrest for the attack is also Algerian:

I wish I could say I was surprised but I'm not.

This is our new norm now and it will gradually get worse and worse. We see it throughout Europe (namely Sweden) but instead of learning from it we are doom to repeat their mistakes

Algerians are well know for carrying knives & the ease with which they use them. The benches on that bridge are usually crowded with Algerian men loitering & smoking weed all day. This is why Joe Public cannot have nice stuff.

No updates. Irish media is terrible for just dropping a story. How is the victim doing? Has the attacker been charged? has he been released? Is he being further detained for questioning? Did the two men know each other. Have any witnesses come forward?

Even the fact that the attacker was Algerian was quietly tacked on to the end of the original Irish Mirror article yesterday rather than making it an update. Most people would never have seen it having already read the article.

When do you think they should update you? The man was arrested yesterday. Updates in the news today.

People wouldn’t want social housing for all young men from Ballyfermot in large dormitories placed beside them either.

Marlborough Street, Edan Quay has always been a dodgy area with drug dealing and using in any of the lanes off them.

I worked in the area for years and was always a kip, loads of stabbings and beatings on a daily basis. Back of Wynn's and the Abbey's lane, long before the new Irish arrived.

The Luas really made it worse as it got them into town much earlier so an all day thing and the Hackett bridge makes a handy getaway to a different policing area.

I'm sure it's even worse now with new gangs around.
