They 'weren't involved' from an insurance perspective as I stopped short enough from them to ensure that they weren't hit (straight from my insurance company's mouth).

I've tried following up with the Gardaí, no acknlowledgement of my queries. It's been six months, I have to try and let it go for my own sake, but not without making the evidence public first.

The only driver who comes out of that clip with any credit is the person in lane 1, everyone else is lane hogging, especially the two artic drivers in the middle lane. He undertook you but was braking back to the speed of the car in front of you so the first flash was aggression on your part, the rest more so. Yes he was a knob braking then but all fault still lies with the tipper truck driver (why was he even in that lane?) as you need to travel a distance behind you're capable of stopping in, he wasn't paying enough attention.

It's a classic example of why lane hogging leads to accidents, why were you in that lane when the other two were completely empty?

I was waiting to overtake the trucks in lane 2 with traffic in front of me - look at the speed readout, I was accelerating up to 95kph and he forced me to slow down to 65kph in a 100kph zone.

The flash was to indicate, 'hey, you just cut me up'. If that's aggression, then I don't know what to say.

    (Edited to remove unnecessary jab)

I'm not having a complete go at you, it was more of a question aimed at everyone who sits in a middle or outside lane, and especially at those who drive for a living who are 'supposed' to know the rules of the road. The truck driver in the middle lane was the main cause of the congestion, but, and this is not just you, 'waiting' in the outside lane is just as bad. If everyone simply pulled in until they were actually overtaking the truck faster traffic could get by.

I always pull in even if there's only 100 metres between the vehicles I'm going to overtake, if everyone did that we'd be dandy.

Point taken, but in my defence I always try and avoid getting too close to cars in front, and it can look (as in the video) that I was hogging. Believe me, I was just wanting to get the overtake done and return to lane 1 as swiftly as I could.

Main person to blame in that clip is the truck driver who crashed

Take that higher, some Guards are very lazy, it depends what station you go to.

Man … that’s a shocker! Blatant reckless driving by the BMW driver. The M50 is brutal for incidents. Could it have been avoided? -Several different hazards are happening at the same time & it’s dark.

Large HGV truck ahead should not be driving in the 2nd lane (& getting overtaken in lane one). Use of lanes in general is v poor all round.

The BMW is aggressive/reckless. Getting the finger & flashing lights the second time, (annoyance?) escalated the situation which was already looking risky ahead.

    Music playing adds further distraction.

Car behind you was too close to you.
Traffic ahead was slower/ing. Your car- too close to the BMW ahead (2 second rule), esp when it’s clear he’s reckless.
The tippper truck behind you.. illegal to be in lane 3.

All in all a recipe for disaster. Hope there were no serious injuries with you or others.

The flash was to indicate, 'hey, you just cut me up'.

Flashing headlights to express annoyance (whilst understandable & people do it), it’s improper use.

Id take this event with lessons to learn. Unfortunately we’ve limited control over other the behaviour of others (possibly under influence) … which put you in a v dangerous situation. Under pressure, defensive driving skills could have taken the heat out of this pressure cooker. The worst offender taking off… annoying, but ‘what comes around….’

    Hope you’re ok 👌

Edit: I can understand why you’d feel the need to let this one go. Personally I’d remove the footage, engaging with post-mortem comments (boards/youtube) re-lives the stress of it.

Yeah, if there was one thing I wish I'd done differently it would have been not to react to him throwing shapes with that second light flash.

I usually am quite aware of leaving myself an escape route should the worst happen but I never thought in a million years that the BMW would bring me to a halt where heavy traffic is merging from a number of slips and going from 80 to 100kph (it's the N7 outbound at Newland's Cross). It really was the perfect storm.

Luckily I wasn't badly hurt, just some minor neck and back pain. The first gentleman who was hit by the tipper ended up with a fractured verterbra, so I was told, but was expected to recover.

The mental scars are worse, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I've sought counselling as I've realised I've a touch of PTSD. That will heal with time too, I hope.

Edit: to your last point, there's a certain amount of catharsis in opening this up and taking the comments, good and bad. I'll try to take both kinds in a positive manner.

I can totally empathise with where you’re coming from -reactions & all.
Well, you’ve got to move forward … and hope time and the support speeds that up. Good on you for being pro active in the healing.
Most drivers have only the basics & never get beyond them and their bad habits. I would highly recommend doing a course in Advanced Driving. -I completed one a few years ago and brought my driving to another level. (An ex UK cop was instructor). Honestly…Saved my life on multiple occasions/got rid of habits I didn’t know I had / radically changed how I read the road / and don’t get stressed driving… actually enjoy it more! . I think you’d find it enjoyable, and well worth the experience! (Would help you get over a v bad experience, (since you improve yourself) … and your insurance reduces dramatically which is a bonus 👍) …for your head’s sake I’d still remove the clip 😉

Good advice there. I did have a copy of Roadcraft at one stage 🙂

Yep, good guide. Practical on-road experience with a highly trained driver is amazing. When they drive your own car, it’s a real eye opener, and they pick up on exact areas to raise your skills. It was with the Institute of Advanced Motorists I did the training.

I'm very surprised that truck drivers insurance company didn't try to pursue it.

But it's no surprise to see people on here try to equate flashing lights, with a brake test that resulted in a serious collision, four damaged vehicles, and serious injuries.

There is zero equity between the two.

Brake checking is a mandatory court appearance, that's what I was told from Gardai after reporting something in the past. Their actions caused a collision, they should be accountable. The truck driver obviously wasn't paying attention or driving too close if they couldn't stop in time, but the BMW started it all and isn't innocent there.

The thing with trying to drive at a safe distance behind another vehicle to be able to stop in time is that the shitehawks who do what that BMW did, continually reduce that gap by diving in from another lane.

On motorways in France, they have long lines painted on the side of the road; 'traits' which are guides to the distance you should keep behind another vehicle. Two 'traits' at motorway speeds is designated a safe distance.

So even if that truck was keeping a safe distance, inevitably it would be closed up by idiots weaving from lane to lane in the vain hope of somehow advancing in heavy traffic.

Stupid driving…….hard to see but the light was red when he flew through………

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,518 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

tbf you were closer to the car in front in lane 3 than the truck you were waiting to overtake in lane 2…

    /edit to add

regardless of anything you did, him brake checking you in lane 3 is criminal.

-That brake check… absolutely criminal for sure- no excuse! Surprised the Garda weren’t interested … that’s the type of driver who’ll continue to drive dangerously.

On their phone. Bloody hate people like that. You could be the most compliant careful driver on the road and you get an idiot like that wiping you out.

Wow. They side swiped the truck!

Do the Gardaí still not accept dashcam footage electronically?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,517 ✭✭✭JohnC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,451 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Nope. Some Gardai/stations will accept a copy on USB, some will look for the original SD card that was in the camera at the time, the really lazy ones who don't want any work at all will tell you that they need to seize the actual camera for an unlimited period.

    Kinda…

They don't let you submit video through an electronic portal, in the way that many UK police forces do. Some of these UK forces use a portal provided by Nextbase, which doesn't seem to be a great idea for a police force, but there you go.

    I've found huge inconsistencies in how they do accept video submissions, having used some or all of the following over the years;

    • Sure, send me the clip on WhatsApp, wouldja!
    • Can I look at it on YouTube?
    • Send me a link to Google Drive, wouldja?
    • Bring in a USB, and I'll give you back one in return (which happens to have CCTV from a robbery on it)
    • Bring in a USB and I'll download it in front of you and give it back to you
    • Bring in a USB and I'll keep it for ever and ever and ever for when the case goes to Court or is appealed or anything at all
    • Give me your door to door journey footage from that day, so I can see if you did anything wrong and I'll catch you out.
    • Give me the footage on SD card
    • No, not that SD card, I need the original SD card that was in the camera on the day of the incident
    • I must seize the device used for the recording to be investigated by Garda technicians. I've no idea how long this will take. (It took Garda four years to investigate the laptop siezed from Richard Satchwell, btw)

But apart from that, it's all good.

The portal seems silly. So rather than report an incident to Traffic Watch on the phone you fill in the portal. Otherwise the process is still the same and from the sounds of it nothing is done.

I was out with my camera yesterday and just happened to see this chap. Should be able to just throw this up online for them to action easily.
