    What would you choose -

Heading to Bilbao with the family for June, home from Cherbourg. Driving route is north Spain, South France over to Italy, then up through alps to annecy, up to paris and on to Cherbourg.

Can only bring one bike for me (5 bikes will be coming but 4 of them have to be for the rest of the family unfortunately) - and I'm torn - Road bike with a bit of gravel capability (trek crossrip) or Hardtail MTB (orbea laufey). I would bring them both and let the kids use whichever i am not using at the time but they are short arses and will get a massive wedgie from the crossbar on both.

I love a bit of mtb but also really like the idea of tackling a few iconic road climbs en route.

What would you do? Apart from bringing an extra bike (I'm pretty sure i could fit one in, but at the expense of important(ish) things like chairs, a bbq, food and clothes).
