I know a lot of posters enter a thread just to have a dig at the OP but wasn't aware of this trope you speak of. Link us to a few examples of this elsewhere on the site so I can see examples of my offense.

Have a look at the Deposit Return Scheme thread endless examples there, the EP thread where @Fanirish is regularly accused of working for Festival Republic, Ticketmaster along with many other places.

Your gf made a mistake, it's not the end of the world, or a scam. Buy the tickets for the gig and you'll have a great time. If you can't or don't want to, you should be able to sell the add ons on Adverts or Toutless for close to face value.

This may amaze you, but the sales and marketing team would rather sell the tickets, and the upgrades, to people who are going to use them. They make the same turn on the sale whether or not the ticket or service is used, and they would much rather have satisfied customers than pissed-off ones because, amazingly enough, in the long run satisfied customers will do more for your bottom line than dissatisfied ones.

So, the notion that they are scheming to dupe people into buying upgrades without buying tickets doesn't really pass the smell test — it's not the best thing for the bottom line which, as you say yourself, is their primary motivation.

(And I say this as somebody who despises Ticketmaster as much as you do.)

A bit contradictory, you (and many others) are saying you despise ticketmaster but in the same breath say they would rather have satisfied customers rather than pissed off ones.

Ultimately, this is the crux of the issue, they chose to go down the scummy, scam route rather than honest happy customer route. They will ride the monopoly for as long as they have it.

You keep calling it a scam despite it repeatedly proven that it wasn't a scam in anyway, your girlfriend just misread what she was buying.

People can hate Ticketmaster (which the majority do) but we still have to use them as they are essentially a monopoly in the market and thankfully I've had no personal issues using them (bar annoyance at fees).

All other thing being equal, they would rather have satisfied customers than pissed-off ones.

That's not why I despise them. I have other reasons for despising them. There's no contradiction there.

They changed the venue of a gig from Button Factory to Vicar St, and now they want to charge me €5 per ticket to switch from a standing ticket to a seated ticket in Vicar St, which I'd have chosen from the start if they were available.

Not clear from your comment whether you consider that to be good or bad? 😕

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,693 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

It's bad! That's a €5 exchange fee, on top of the difference in ticket price.

I wouldn't be changing my mind if they hadn't changed the venue.

OK, it's presumably not Ticketmaster who has changed the venue; it's the concert promoters.

You and your girlfriend just need to own your fcuk up. Get over it. Accept the blame, learn from it, and stop trying to blame everyone else for something they did NOT go.

Upgrade your gf to one with better observation skills.

OP, it must be absolutely exhausting to be constantly "on" the way you seem to be.

This is not a scam, this is not a conspiracy, this is not some shady attempt at stealing your money. It might make you feel better thinking that nothing is really your fault, that you're a victim of big business and these despicable corporations who are only out to separate you form your money. And trust me, I hate Ticketmaster like the rest of the world.

But this one is on your girlfriend. It's clearly stated that the ticket is not included.

Look on the bright side, now you don't have to go sit through a Justin Timberlake concert!

Ticketmaster don't have to be interested. As per your thread title - "Bought "upsell tickets by mistake". That is the issue. "Bought by mistake". No matter what grievances you have with them, the onus is on the buyer to read what is on screen in front of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Lucan123

Is this not the whole point of the issue "bought by mistake" shows how easily it can be done when you are not tech savvy and under pressure with a timer in the corner.

OPs girlfriend isn't the first to fall for this and most certainly won't be the last when Ticketmaster can gain 180 quid for virtually nothing. If it is as obvious as everyone here is saying then no one would ever make that mistake.

Even Ryanair have warnings when booking with them to make sure you understand if something is out of the ordinary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,149 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

Being "Not tech savy" is one thing, reading what you're buying is another, it's clearly stated that it was an add on and not a ticket for the show. The timer to purchase only begins when you click into the event so you're under no pressure to read what event you're choosing to purchase.

Ticketmaster aren't gaining 180 quid for nothing, they will only gain a % of this, the majority will go to the artist and the promoters.

I can't imagine too many people do make the mistake, can you provide other examples of people doing it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,148 ✭✭✭✭GBX

Maybe it was easy but its not being tech savvy to be able to read what's on screen in big letters. They obviously paid attention to the name of which gig in question, that the date was correct, etc… one does not need to be tech savvy to read the details when you are half way there. Just to pay attention.
They wont be the first or last to buy an upgrade instead of a ticket. But it was still a mistake by the OP's gf. We all make mistakes, no question. But the OP came on here to berate Ticketmaster for "duping" their GF, presumably to make justify their annoyance most likely to make themselves feel better.

That's twice you mentioned somebody making a mistake because they were under time pressure - the OP never mentioned this. And you don't have to be 'tech savvy' to understand 'Show Ticket Not Included'. See post #7.

OP has also failed to explain why his girlfriend entered her credit card details and pressed the 'Purchase tickets' button without seeing a seating plan or a map of the standing areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Lucan123

apologies - I was originally looking at post #11 where there is a clock in the corner, which remined me of all the times I felt under time pressure using ticketmaster. Scanning that image in post #11 again while it does say show ticket not included, it also mentions "Standing" and "General Admission"

It's TM who took my money in the first place and TM who are charging me an additional fee to give them a bit more money for a seat.

does the online 'cooling off' period apply to gig tickets bought online?

MOD: There seems to be quite a lot of attacking the poster and their gf rather than the post, as is the requirement of Boards. I think the message has got across to the OP, so this is now closed.
