Mine is an unactivated day/night meter MCC02 is on the bill but I have a smart meter installed. Thing is I'm overpaying significantly both on the standing charge and unit rate for my night meter and don't get the benefit of the cheaper rates. We inherited the night meter when we bought the house because there was storage heating here initially, but we replaced that with oil heating so no need for the night rate anymore. I checked the standard tariffs online and the Smart deals look to be better overall.

And on the details you got from Switcher/Bonkers, you've put your own usage and not going by the EAB? If they do look better go for it. The only "gotcha" you would have is once activated, you are on the Smart plans forever.

Yes I put in my own usage based on the last 12 months of bills which is a bit higher than the national average and still it recommends the Energia Smart Tariff with 33% discount but that's making assumptions in the calculation of my day vs peak usage. The best value non-smart plan is the Airtricity Home Electric plan with 35% discount, but that keeps me stuck on the day/night meter with the higher standing charge. Is there a reason why someone would want to stick to the non-smart tariffs?

I'm going through the same exercise at the moment. Currently on a non-activated smart meter d/N plan with energia but want to change to a 24 hour plan. My research to date has identified the FloGas "24 Hour Smart Electricity 30% Discount" plan with €140 cashback as the best option for me. I'm a rural user. I have used my usage data file from ESB Networks & bonkers.ie in my research. I also used the data file with energypal.ie but the above FloGas plan doesn't seem to be there.

I only noticed (stupid me) that my smart meter shows Day, Peak and Night KWH usage by pressing the button. Very handy to immediately know your night usage and whether a triple rate makes sense. (excl I know, using the data file which will provide a lot more info).

Question - as I have a relation who hasn't activated their smart meter - does the smart meter show you day/peak/night ANYWAY, even if you're on a 24 hour plan i.e. just for info, or do you have to be on a day/peak/night plan for it to show?

I am 99% sure that it does. (unless its a Day Night Smart meter, One with the yellow green button, It just shows Day Night)

Yes it does. Creating an account on the esbn site will show you the readings in a tabular form, easier than pressing the button.

Why the FloGas 24 plan instead of the Electric Ireland Home Electric + SST Saver 30%.

It's only marginally more expensive daytime than FloGas but half the price at night.

    Day: 08.00 - 23.00 25.92c per kWh

    Night: 23.00 - 08.00 13.62c per kWh

    Peak: 17.00 - 19.00 27.65c per kWh

    Yes it does.

Edit. If it is an RM108 day/night meter it shows day, night & combined total on the meter. However, the data file generated on ESB Networks gives day/night/peak figures.

And at the risk of stating the obvious, be assured that accessing the data on your ESB account DOES NOT activate time of use/smart-metering. This can only occur when your retail supplier does so (which should only occur) with your consent.

Got the email just now for the electric-only BWG 18 month Fixed Contract.

I signed up to the electric-only BWG deal last year so may just renew.

We work from home so all our usage is during the day. Anything better or should I just stick with Flogas?

Folks, in an urban area and currently with Flogas on a 24hr rate as one of us (couple) works from home 3/4 days per week and the other does not work from home at all. MCC is MCC01 which I believe indicates we have not activated our smart meter and I think the advice previously was to avoid that.

When I input over 700 days of readings into Energypal, it spits out the attached view. Are all the best value plans smart meter plans meaning I would need to activate it?

Also, because some of the plans are not 24hr rates, is it indicating I could be better off on a day/night rate in some instances?

Thank you for any helpful advice

Has anyone switched from the electric-only BWG Fixed Contract to Dual Fuel offer with Flogas (which is variable) previously and been hit with the early termination fee? Seem to recall others switching the other way round previously (well from electricity variable only) and not being impacted. Would you still get the €200 cashback offer?

Anyone got the link to the axa deal or is it gone now? I know it's in this thread somewhere but can't find it

Just tried it there now - fail! No good for anyone who hasnt had a smart meter for more than 1 year.

At least Energypal will accept any amount of data (and will warn of its reliability for small data set also!)

I've used it. Worked fine but I do have more than a 12 months data.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,549 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Tried it using my phone but I couldn't get it to find the hdf file in the downloads folder, I'll try it later on the laptop as I can drag the file into the box. My 36% EV plan with BG is ending in July, not much out there to entice me yet. Maybe they'll give me a good offer to stay (he says hopefully...)

Or just save it to your Favorites in your browser. Only takes 2 or 3 clicks.

I tried that but when I went back to it it showed the standard pricing.

I'm having an absolute nightmare with Flogas moving home mid contract. They told me they'd waive cancelation fees/not take cashback back as I was remaining a customer at my new address, but they didn't actually waive them in the end and are now sending me bills for it. The only reason I had to create a new contract is because my new home doesn't have a smart meter.

I've been emailing them for weeks and it still isn't resolved. I even cut off my DD, and they sent me a new bill with 10e added for a failed DD lol.

Give them a call. More likely to get resolved that way.

Im moving into a new build electric apartment (no gas).

Do you think this is the best deal currently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭Lando Griffins OTHER HALF

For me it was, but that was following my checking that about 22% of my electricity was used at night time. I only use about 3000KWH a year, but I did notice that using 24 hour rates available on Energia that I'm really only looking at €100-€200 per year saving. To make it work I think you need to ensure that you use the night rate at least over the 20% as I mentioned, depending perhaps on your yearly usage.

For anyone that doesn't yet know their usage, and hasn't got around to doing the Energy pal etc., a quick press of the button on the smart meter will give you your total (since installation) day, peak, night so it's a good estimate in a hurry of %'s.

Plans that offer cashback are often the better option for low usage customers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 624 ✭✭✭bobbyg

I ended up going with the BWG 24 hour rate with flogas for 23.44 cent

Anybody got a link to the new signup OR the renew signup with Flogas BWG? I can probably get either and today was quoted 24.03 elec 257 supply charge and 7.9 with 151 supply charge for gas. Both incl vat.

Or is there better out there at the moment for a non activated smart meter urban?
