He's coming to a fork in the road though I reckon. I don't think Trump will be happy to pour vast American resources over the rest of his presidency into just keeping things ticking over for Ukraine. So I'd say he'll either ramp up the pressure on Putin via sanctions or some other means to force him into meaningful negotiations or withdraw from the situation entirely which of course would be a disaster for Ukraine.

There's no "vast resources" being poured into Ukraine by the US. No new US military/economic/humanitarian aid under Trump (and there never will be, in my opinion).

In a way, while large, the US expenditure on Ukraine was never "vast" in context of a country that is seemingly so rich the public there barely seem to blink at insane burning of money on utterly stupid stuff like invading Iraq (approx 5 Ukraines, back of the envelope) their inefficient health care system, or giving bumper tax cuts to people who don't really need another $1m added on their bank balance every time a Republican is POTUS.

I don't believe he'll be ramping up pressure on Putin no matter what Russia do, but hopefully Putin does annoy him enough by not giving him his big war-ending public moment that normalisation of US relations with Russia gets halted, and the US continues to be willing to sell weapons to Europe/Ukraine for the war.

Trump has an incentive to turn the screws on Russian oil

US oil producers are squealing in pain

Taking some of the Russian oil off the markets would help em

They just need to figure out how to bribe him via crypto

Invading Iraq was more like 5 times total Ukraine spend every single year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,437 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

Lol, if you have those figures for Iraq to hand fair enough.

I just went off possibly faulty memory that it was about $ 1 trillion (for war and occupation) while their aid to Ukraine so far is approx. $170bn (more certain of that figure as its been in the news more recently). Should really google it and get my ducks in a row before I comment.

And Trump surrendered to the Taliban. Missed the part where he asked for them to pay anything back.

I had a look at it looks like estimates vary on the cost of the Iraq war but Brown University's conservative estimate is $1.1 Trillion.

How much money has the United States provided Ukraine?

The U.S. Congress has voted through five bills that have provided Ukraine with aid since the war began, doing so most recently in April 2024. The total budget authority under these bills—the “headline” figure often cited by news media—is $175 billion.

Looks like you're right. Again, quick google so I may have some stuff wrong but the overall point holds easily.

Its fairly obvious his Trump Tax Bull is nothing more than market manipulating pump and dump shenanigans. That being said all this is going to come home to roost for the Republicans who are enabling this BS as well as the damage from all this will only become clear later on when its too late to sort it out at least without massive pain involved.

In reality it’s probably much less than that if the real adjusted for depreciation figure for the donated equipment are used

Great value considering it’s destroyed a good chunk of the Russian military might

Well, as we all know, Trump wasn't elected President to be sane, coherent and respectful of deceased US military members.

Quite a lot of the ammo they sent was obsolete anyway and due for destruction.

I'm not sure the 258million people whose lives were saved from fentanyl overdoses since Trump became President would agree with you.

Steven Pinker wrote a very good piece in the NY Times the other day about the reality of Harvard, which contrasts Trump's insane vendetta against it, with the very real mistakes it did make and which arguably led to this crazy war started by the Trump administration.

    Absolutely deranged

Donald Trump Truth Social 05.26.25 07:22 AM EST

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY THROUGH WARPED RADICAL LEFT MINDS, WHO ALLOWED 21,000,000 MILLION PEOPLE TO ILLEGALLY ENTER OUR COUNTRY, MANY OF THEM BEING CRIMINALS AND THE MENTALLY INSANE,THROUGH AN OPEN BORDER THAT ONLY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT WOULD APPROVE, AND THROUGH JUDGES WHO ARE ON A MISSION TO KEEP MURDERERS, DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS, GANG MEMBERS, AND RELEASED PRISONERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, IN OUR COUNTRY SO THEY CAN ROB, MURDER, AND RAPE AGAIN — ALL PROTECTED BY THESE USA HATING JUDGES WHO SUFFER FROM AN IDEOLOGY THAT IS SICK, AND VERY DANGEROUS FOR OUR COUNTRY. HOPEFULLY THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, AND OTHER GOOD AND COMPASSIONATE JUDGES THROUGHOUT THE LAND, WILL SAVE US FROM THE DECISIONS OF THE MONSTERS WHO WANT OUR COUNTRY TO GO TO HELL. BUT FEAR NOT, WE HAVE MADE GREAT PROGRESS OVER THE LAST 4 MONTHS, AND AMERICA WILL SOON BE SAFE AND GREAT AGAIN! AGAIN, HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY, AND GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Does anybody have any words? Imagine the family of a fallen soldier reading that.

"Happy Memorial Day" as if it was a day out to Disneyland or Waterworld.

The military loves him. They don't care that he is insulting them (they probably don't even realise it) because he is busy insulting others, and that is great with them.

Same with workers, middle-income and poorer. They don't care that more effort is being put into getting religion into schools than into having adequate schools available and a proper education system.

Trump is not some sort of anomaly that managed to hoodwink his way into power. He was welcomed, feted, cheered and pushed into power by those who knew exactly what he was and what he represents. And they continue to clap and cheer now that his failures are all coming home to roost. His approval ratings have hardly changed, and people are pretty satisfied with what he is doing and how he goes about it.

I have no sympathy for the families of fallen soldiers, or fallen police officers, etc regarding Trump. They should have been out shouting in the streets about how terrible this man was, but you can bet a sizeable portion actually voted for him.

Whenever he complains about illegals entering the country, he always mentions rapists, and yet he has been proven in a court to be a sexual assaulter himself who has been caught on tape bragging about sexually assaulting women.

Trump in his speech to graduates at West Point 'No one wanted to join the Military while Biden was president'

All of the graduates had joined when Biden was in power.

I didn’t realise Biden let in 21 trillion immigrants. Impressive numbers.
