No wouldn't route for the Chinese. At least America will have elections and Trump won't be involved. Remind when the elections in China are again.

That's why I called that angle nonsense as an explanation for Trump's conduct wrt Ukraine.

Did someone mention anything about a long game v China?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,172 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    Yes, three pages back.

And in the media, talk of a 'reverse Nixon', of the US trying to weaken the ties between Russia and China, so that in an eventual Pacific showdown between US and China, Russia is not involved.

    https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20250228-trump-s-russia-pivot-keeps-china-guessing-on-ukraine

If the Trump administration is able to pull off a ‘reverse Nixon’ and (partially) wean Russia off China, Beijing would see its hold over a no longer isolated Russia diminish significantly. A hastily brokered deal over Ukraine would also allow the US to refocus its efforts on the Indo-Pacific, which China naturally does not want.

Ah. Yeah, agreed, I don't buy that theory at all. Trump is a geriatric who won't be around to witness or reap the benefit of any long game policy. The only other reason he'd be doing something like that is patriotism - which he doesn't have an ounce of. His administration haven't demonstrated anything remotely approaching intelligent economic or diplomatic policies.

Trump has picked a trade war with the entire world? The 50% EU tariff is the same as the China 130% or whatever tariff, a ploy to get a better deal. The tariff with Russia doesn't matter as USA trade with Russia is tiny; less than that of Germany despite the size of USA economy

In a fragmenting world order with Russia constantly agitating you don't think the EU should be in a position to protect itself without needing help from USA?

USA has done a deal with China on tariff I guess that was part of the deal?

IN terms of adversaries, China is the only comparable show in town to USA. One is autocratic with some of the advantages that brings in terms of long term view and unity of purpose.

Russia/China combined trade along with Russia/India combined trade has ballooned due to the war and sanctions. Russia China is at circa 250 billion, which is where the EU was 4 years ago. The war has been really good for China and India with cheap fuel on tap from Russia. More sanctions just drop the price from them and lead to closer ties between China Russia.

Any war game simulations I've heard of with a Taiwan invasion ends badly for the States; trying to project naval and air power that distance from home against a formidable enemy close to home is really really difficult. Tying China into a guerilla type war with munitions spread among Taiwan population along with drone warfare seems like the best way to tie China in and block up their shipping channels. Keeping Russia energy off line in such a scenario would be key.

You can disagree with Trump and his cronies as to the threat from China but from what I've heard they seem to be super focussed on China right or wrong.

In general this thread is more like a football fans thread with sober commentary rare

Trump had no issue starting a trade war with nuclear China, but not once was he willing to put any tariff on Russia, or sanctions . It really is so suspect, world leaders need to be talking in private to trump, asking him straight out what Putin has on him. I would not care if there was a cover up, as long as Putin was off Trump back. If UK, France, Germany, EU, everyone agreed to dismiss any tape as Ai ,and to stick to it, then Trump is released of this blackmailer

All of the above, plus…critically…Donnie does not care. He does not care what China do, he does not even care what Russia do, he is focused on one thing and one thing alone…his own sorry incontinent ass. There is no plan, and there is no strategy beyond Donnie trying to make himself look good or otherwise profit from stuff.

There could be some people around him who buy it (hairbrained idea of splitting China and Russia), but ultimately they must be really stupid and ignorant (as well as evil!).

A key strength of the US is alliances and relationships of trust built up over multiple decades since WW2 both in Asia and Europe.

Republicans are merrily wrecking that in Europe now, as if it is completely divorced from rest of the world. I think the Asian countries will all be watching what is playing out in Europe and drawing their own conclusions from it about risks of relying on the US to help in the face of any confrontation with China.

It's extremely unlikely the US can separate Russia and China under their current leadership and they will more likely end up alienating their Asian allies, as well as the Europeans, and weakening themselves

IMO Russia and China will carry on much as they have always done under Putin/Xi's period of rule, Trump & Republican's love bombing Putin or not.

They will mistrust and attempt to attack + undermine both the US and its (possibly former!) allies and retain a closer relationship with each other than either of this pair does with the US.

Russia won't be involved anyway. Unless they're riding sea horses and armed with bayonettes?

    Not exactly the NY post

    https://www.allsides.com/news-source/the-week-bias

Have you a link to legislation which gives Trump this power.

In a thread full of pile ons to a couple of posters posting Kremlin friendly drivel, conspiracy theory nonsense which aligns which most on the thread is let slide.

For the record Trump is a crooked ****. The idea that a man who managed to get elected after a civil rape verdict, Jan 6, grab em by the pussy etc etc is compromised by some hooker tape is hilarious. His base don't care.

People rejoicing in the death of ordinary Russian soldiers is cheered on; despite the high probability that many of those are likely Russian men in a desperate position or even worse conscripts from occupied territory who are likely Ukrainian.

But hey let's cheerlead like in a **** football derby match and forget about basic human dignity for the ordinary people suffering in this conflict.

Roger Waters "Amused to Death" comes to mind; as prophetic and depressing as "1984".

    A trump apologist.

A Ukraine invading, massacring, raping, child stealing, civilian attacking, executing pows apologist.

Is this the point we are now.

And the same will be decrying lack of humanity.

    Who is that directed at?

If me feel free to quote anything complementary of Trump I've ever posted. I'll wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,604 ✭✭✭✭Say my name

Why? Trump is obviously very close to your heart that you feel triggered by any association that he has to Russia.

The mention that China is a ruse was also triggering.

I mean why would he have any real beef with China when he's a putin lackey and putin is entirely dependent on China to run their country and military.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭Large bottle small glass

    Triggered?

Given how often it's mentioned that he's an actual FSB agent here as fact, I spent about 30 mins reading various left leaning sources to see if it has any validity.

What I read confirmed what I know; he's a crook but no evidence he's an agent.

Someone else posted that Trump has unlimited power after the passing of some budget bill; I asked for a link because it sounds like nonsense. I've no doubt the bill will suit the super rich in the States but I've no idea where his new super powers come from.

Maybe you are okay reading drivel is it aligned with your leanings, I'd rather just read facts.

"A Ukraine invading, massacring, raping, child stealing, civilian attacking, executing pows apologist."

You can withdraw the above quote anytime you like.

I've spent over two months in the Ukraine in the last decade including 10 days since the war started. I know lots of ordinary Ukrainians directly effected by Putin's war.

I'm not going to be lectured to by someone not even man enough to quote a post.

Which side of "the" Ukraine did you visit?

    The russian invaded side?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭Large bottle small glass

    Lviv.

    Kiev in 16 & 17.

    Still waiting for that apology

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,604 ✭✭✭✭Say my name

If it quacks like a donald and walks like a donald.

And I'm not left leaning. But any criticism must be from left leaners?

You got upset because I didn't quote you in reply as an apologist. That's entirely on you that you replied, that that brings shame and hurt. And I still never mentioned anywhere that it was in reply to you in the first place. So. It's on you.

Not you of course. But it's strange now an angle of peaceful russians is being pushed. Like a desire to whitewash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭Large bottle small glass

    Upset?

Where did I say you were left leaning?

I checked left leaning sources for Trump agent story. It's a simple concept
