This the one song that I like more every time I hear it, still can't get over the poor televote

Anyway, love this girl and her reaction to JJ was priceless…

Why not come up with a song that will appeal to other countries tastes,, Irish music isn't appealing to the vast majority of countries that are in Eurovision.

Why not come up with a song that will appeal to other countries tastes?

Because what is the incentive to do so? It's more profitable for RTE if they can just send a crew to somewhere else to cover it.

I have posted this remix a few times as well...it is utterly class!

The UK could have sent this, staging could have leaned into the cowboy look, it is also catchy as hell, Troye Sivan vibes.

It might appeal to people for just being different. You never know!

Plenty of Eastern European countries feature their own local instruments or styles of music native to them to augment their dong. No reason we couldn’t do likewise. A poster from Greece here last week mentioned how the Greek entry this year is a modern interpretation of a native style of music. It was an up to date pop song but with a traditional feel. We could certainly do that.

I think Ireland's perceived idea of their place in EV is outdated. We done well when we were seen as the wee guys. Always a battle between us and England.. Lot's of goodwill. People having telephones for the first time.

We messed up somewhere between then and now

It was a very different contest setup last time we won. Aside from other changes that happened in wider society and music:

You had to sing in an official language - so we could sing in English. As could UK and Malta.

No backing track - the music had be performed live.

    It was jury vote only.

There were less countries and the centre of gravity was still towards Western Europe.

Sometimes I have a quick gawk at the youtube view count as often gives a good indication of how popular actually was (i.e. without all the politically motivated manipulation)

Just checking on Israel - has a 61% downvote percentage on the video:

Interesting how an act as disliked as this can get second…

You mean that Finnish entry? Might have had something to do with the fact that many of the viewers are children sitting there with their parents watching while this clown sings about having a gigantic orgasm all while flashing her junk in everyone's faces…

I think the public vote needs to be scrapped in its current form. The EBU really need to get a grip on whether they’re running a song contest or a popularity competition. By mixing votes you can’t have both. Both voting blocs, Jury and Public are essentially voting on two different premises. Juries are familiar with the songs ahead of time and assess on musicality, performance, etc. The public get one shot to hear the song and can only maybe remember 5 at most.

With this in mind I think more countries should be objecting as is. The subtie and quieter songs will never get a public’s attention compared to a big stage performance with a bit of a novelty number.

The public vote is also easily manipulated as we’ve seen over the last free years since 2022. Even worse in 2023 when Loreen won I’d contend the EBU themselves were orchestrating the gaming. Going into that contest there seemed to be a message out out that Sweden would win. The juries got the memo and so did the public. All for the ABBA Eurovision reunion to not happen in Sweden last year. Add to that Ukraine and Israel being consistently in the top 5 the last few years?

Really what’s needed IMHO is a return to the jury system to decide the winner. You can still keep public voting but award a People’s Choice trophy to the winner of the public vote. Allow both winners an encore performance. This way, the best song wins and the popularity competition isn’t affected either. Everyone wins.

have to agree. No need to sexualise to the extent some recent acts have done. Olly Alexander is an excellent, successful musician. There was no need to have his stage setup as something that looked like a gay orgy from a filthy toilet. The zero audience votes for these acts will hopefully put a stop to it

I think going back to solely the juries deciding the winner would be awful. Austria 2018 and Macedonia 2019 would've been terrible winners imo.

They certainly need to look into how they can try stop the televote being manipulated as per the last two years, but a 50/50 televote/jury split is almost certainly the best system.

Israel not doing that well on streaming, which is weird considering how much Europe apparently loved it 🤔

I think Norway (and maybe others) were pushing for a change to the jury/televote weightings…something like 40% jury and 60% televote. Thankfully, all those discussions have now gone quiet. Going back to a jury-only vote would be a terrible idea as well. Just leave the split at 50/50 and bring juries back to semis.

Both the jury and the televote procedure need changing. Five professional jury members isn't enough…apart from anything, it's much easier to manipulate five people than it is to manipulate 16 people. It would also allow a greater cross-section of people from the music/broadcastings worlds. The jury ranking system needs to end as well…how is someone able to rank the songs from 1st all the way down to 25th? How do you determine which song deserves 19th place over another? Just go back to the old system whereby each jury member gave one to 10 marks to each song as soon as it had been performed (except their own, of course.)

We've seen one country try to manipulate the televote this year, they've cracked that now, so next will be to manipulate the juries. In the words of Krusty the Clown: "Let’s just say it moved me….TO A BIGGER HOUSE." Bigger jury sizes would go someway to mitigating that risk, and perhaps take away the feeling from many that the juries are snobby, conservative and only like ballads.

I've already posted earlier this week about changes to the televote - revert to opening the phone lines only once all the songs have been performed and limit each phone number to four (or less) votes instead of 20.
