There is no place the Palestinians can go to in Gaza and not be in the line of fire. That's the entire objection of the Israelis - to have them in the line of fire.

It seems that the mood is very much changing quite rapidly. Gazans are openly protesting Hamas (they are subject to execution) and Israelis are doing the the same (maybe not subject to execution but a bit of roughing up by the IDF is possible).

After Yair Golan's doubling down on the "killing babies as a hobby", he's joined by Moshe Ya'alon.

'The mood is changing': Israeli anger grows at conduct of war

Yair Golan, a left-wing politician and former deputy commander of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), sparked outrage on Monday when he said: "Israel is on the way to becoming a pariah state, like South Africa was, if we don't return to acting like a sane country.

"A sane state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not set itself the goal of depopulating the population," he told Israeli public radio's popular morning news programme.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit back, describing the comments as "blood libel".

But on Wednesday, a former Israeli minister of defence and IDF chief of staff - Moshe "Bogi" Ya'alon - went further.

"This is not a 'hobby'," he wrote in a post on X, "but a government policy, whose ultimate goal is to hold on to power. And it is leading us to destruction."

I expected more of you as you are one of the few to engage. But these posts are seriously disgusting.

The truth will emerge and it will show that Israel are scum, as bad as Hamas, that there is a famine in Gaza, and that war crimes and genocide were committed by Israel.

Evidently you think being forced from your home to some designated area under threat of violence is a days outing.

The hate speech laws are primarily made for the benefit of a particular ethnic group that really really really likes genocide. Their whole identity is built around extreme hatred for anyone that isn't them. You can read about it in a book called The Bible. They get really upset when people notice and comment on the things they are doing.

Are you sure it is the Bible you are referring to? Who exactly are the "particular ethic group" that would benefit from hate speech laws?

Careful not to conflate Israel with a particular religion as you're playing into the hands of the Israeli far right who like nothing better than to accuse anyone against them as being against the entire religion.

The problem is the IHRA's definition, which Ireland has now adopted, but is seen as grossly biased in Israel's favour. The IHRA's working examples declare that Manifestations might include the targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity.

If Netanyahu can scream antisemitism at Jews in the opposition party in Israel, I don't know how Europe can expect to police this. It is clearly used primarily to silence critics of Israel's policy and to attack anyone who stands up for its victims, with claims littered all over the 1464 pages of this thread that one can only care about genocide if one has a problem with the perpetrators.

Regarding the IDF firing towards diplomats, it would seem that is safer to visit Ukraine as a diplomat and be safe from Russian fire than it is to visit Israel as a diplomat and be safe from Israeli fire.

Their excuse is that walking in the wrong area of the West Bank is grounds to be shot at. Not redirected or talked to. Just a bullet in the head like you're a common journalist.

Two Israeli embassy staff were shot to death this morning in Washington DC. The killer was arrested and he was filmed shouting " free Palestine " and has been named.

Tragic for the victims and families obviously but very bad news for Gaza just as things were turning a little positive.

Dreadful for the people killed. Not sure it could be much worse for Gaza though, interesting to see how the psycho Netanyahu responds, the two people killed were at a Gaza event in the museum from what I've read. Though to follow Israel's logic to date the IDF will start bombing Washington in retaliation.

The IHRA's definition should never have been adopted by anyone.

I read they were at an event organised to help Gazans.. the murderer is not only evil and cowardly, but very stupid

One weird detail coming out is that the alleged shooter was initially thought to be a witness to the shooting; he ran in to a building in distress, and people sat him down and gave him water. Then the police arrived to arrest him, and he was dragged away shouting “Free Palestine”.

The shooter seems to be just a random shooter with no affiliation to any terror group. Basically now I'd say Israel will just use it as a tool to create more propaganda about the anti-semitic language and feelings being stoked up by protestors and media.

Possible i suppose. Where did you read that ?

From what is being reported is that the event was at the DC Jewish museum organized by the American Jewish commitee for young diplomats and both victims were young diplomats from the embassy. Maybe unlikely they were all sat around waving Palestine flags you would imagine.

    Re. the diplomats…..

They didn't realise they were diplomats and are sorry for inconvenience caused. Although they should probably have noticed they were a bit too tall to be Palestinian kids.

If this is your understanding of (a) what constitutes human shields and the actions around it and (b) WW2; then it leads to your understanding of Israel being, not surprisingly, woefully inept to say the least.

That's exactly what they are doing and it's laughable to watch. Gideon Saar out earlier blaming the EU countries for their hurty words whipping up "anti-Semitism". Nothing at all to do with your actions in Gaza?? **** pig

Get your criticism of Israel in quick folks because once our lapdog of a government adopts this we'll all be on our best behaviour in this subject. The EU is looking less appealing and more authoritarian by the day.

Are Palestinians the most persecuted people on the planet? Targeted by Israel and HAMAS simultaneously unless they tow the party line?

The lurid headline about 14,000 babies dying in within 48 hours was simply false. The BBC engages in pitiful circumlocution to avoid saying so here, but it's clear.

That's OK though, I'm sure the corrections will be given the same prominence as the original stories, that Tom Fletcher won't remain in his position, and that no-one was inspired to commit violence as a result...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,770 ✭✭✭circadian

The BBC didn't just make up some headline, it's a report on what the UN Humanitarian Chief said.

I agree that the quote from fletcher was clearly exaggerated. The BBC simply report on factual matters - they are neutral. What people read into their reports is of course their own business. I don't see any "correction" required from the BBC.

As regards Fletcher and the cases of starving kids, it is important to know that severely malnourished kids will suffer the effects for years. That there are 14,000 estimated children at real risk of either dying or being severely affected is shocking.

But yes, to tag on "within 48 hours" was unlikely correct.

Equally though, if that's an argument suggesting the situation of starvation in Gaza is not as bad as people make out, it's a poor and crass argument. The fact remains that Israel has prevent aid entering Gaza for 11 weeks.

I'd take the EU every day of the week and twice on a Sunday over Israel - who are clearly ultra authoritarian and with zero appeal.

Shocking that Hamas treat Palestinians like this but it isn't surprising - they have form. An odious abhorrent organisation that only see victory through the barrel of a gun and ultra violence. That they have no problem doing this to the people who they claim to be representing is disgusting.

But Palestinians are protesting because they see the truth too.
