This munster championship is epic is getting old..are limerick not going for 7 in a row? In recent years waterford could not win an argument so that leaves 4 teams for 3 places...of course it will usually go down to the last day..and no threat of relegation

Yes there have been some great munster games but plenty average ones too..everyone was raving about cork/clare a few weeks ago ,but realistically cork threw away a big lead against a team that we now know are not firing at all..

These things come in cycles..for years you had tipp/cork..and the rest fighting for scraps.

Not that long ago you had kilkenny/ wexford/ offaly all flying not to mention galway..

I'm gonna say it, football championship has been better than the hurling so far.

Embraced new rules and you hear no shite about one province being superior to the rest to the same extent

"In recent years Waterford couldn't win an argument...not that long ago Offaly were flying it"

You are playing fast and loose with the concept of time here!

If you read what i said you might agree..i said these things come in cycles..cycles take time..for example limerick are going through a great period but who knows how they will be in 10/15/20 years time

Do you agree with the rest of what i said?

No. But the reality of the two routes to qualify for the All Ireland series being utterly unbalanced shouldn't be ignored either. And the pretence that there are 6 teams strong enough for Leinster is doing nobody any good either.

One possibility is to have a Munster conference and a Leinster conference with either 4 or at most 5 teams in each. Realistically it should be 4 as only 8 teams are good enough. Play home and away with the top team winning the conference in name - and only qualify the top 2 teams to the All Ireland Semis to ensure jeopardy to the greatest extent possible until the last games. Bottom teams from each to play off with the loser playing the Joe McDonough for the right to stay up.

What you said about Waterford I would disagree with strongly, especially as an argument to undermine the difference between the two provinces presently!

The depth in Munster is unprecedented but the lack of it in Leinster is not, I'm hearing the same thing for the last 25 years about the standard of the competition. That's more than just a cycle.

This will change in the future at some point, I'd still advocate an open draw. But it will never happen, so we'll have to live with the Munster v Leinster debate into the future unfortunately.

A draw between Kilkenny and Dublin tomorrow would put both through potentially knocking out Wexford

Wexford seem to have Kilkennys number in the round robin and could be very intresting if Kilkenny were to lose tomorrow

As predicted Offaly vs Antrim is the relagation playoff

Maybe saying they couldn't win an argument was a bad turn of phrase but i think im right in saying waterford have 2 or 3 wins in the last 5 years..i actually wouldn't mind the idea of an open draw too to be honest....but as you say nothing will.change any time soon..

As a pure hurling man from a county where you rarely see a football after may i agree with you. Not many great hurling games yet. Even the close ones like cork clare were bad tempered scraps dominated by refereeing decisions.

Football looks the most open in years and we had 3 very good provincial finals

For all the talk of Cork limerick tomorrow, tipp waterford has more on the line. Tipp last game and with waterford having to go to Puc next week tomorrow is win or bust for both.

Waterford have a good bench, and maybe tipp older guard might find the going tough especially in the heat.

Anything but a Dublin win tomorrow puts Wexford out.

Given the scoring difference, even an Offaly win today wouldn't have changed the Offaly Antrim game being a relegation battle.

I see Johnny Kelly questioning no relegation in Munster a few days ago. If that's the road some leinster managers want to go down then it has to become a 5 team Leinster as you have to give Munster teams the same amount of chances to avoid relegation. So that's 1 less team in the championship. So get ready for his Offaly yoyoing between joe mc and leinster ever year and teams complaining they're not getting enough games against top teams.

The answer isn't to punish the good teams, it's for the leinster teams like Offaly to get their act together. And all I see is leinster teams getting worse. Wexford could be in a lot of trouble in a year or two.

There a 1 man team. Without Chin they would be screwed.

3,722 reported in Wexford Park today. For a championship match. That is so so bad.

Wexford played Offaly in a league game in early February last year and there was 3,664 at it. Only 58 less people.

This is a problem the GAA have to do something about. The championship is on its last legs outside a few Munster games, the semi finals and final. Even the preliminary qfs and qfs are dead.

Solution imo to the current provincial imbalance.

Replace the national hurling with a round robin provincial championship.

The all Ireland series then is a group of 2 but open draw using seeding system based on the provincial finishing positions.

Top 3 from each group. qualify for knock outs. Similar to now winners to semi final 2nd in one group v 3rd in the other in QFs. Importantly bottom team in each group play off in relegation decider.

Pros - keeps provincial championship in place albeit not directly part of all Ireland. Does not add to fixture calendar. Puts relegation jeopardy in place for all. Keeps home championship group games in place. Opens up new pairings, imagine the buzz of Galway v Clare in salthill or Waterford v KK in Walsh park

If the Munster championship was abolished to make way for an open draw format, it wouldnt solve anything. Munster teams playing against Offaly, Wexford, Dublin and Antrim would be one sided hammerings 9 times out of 10.

The problem at the moment is that most of the the Leinster teams aren't at the required level, and the ones that are, Galway and Kilkenny, don't have enough supporters that can be bothered going to games.

The Munster championship is an incredible competition, the games are great occasions. Getting rid of it because Leinster teams are weak and Leinster supporters arent going to matches would be ridiculous.

Getting rid of provincials won't bring back Leinster fans.

But it will drive away Munster fans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,423 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Don't need to get rid of provincials just keep them as seperate completions instead of the league as outlined above. The proposal is not without flaws, one being how does lower league completion work with promotions etc but it's better than current situation imo

Munster championship is great because of the fans, the venues, the rivalries, that's the biggest difference between Munster and Leinster.

Getting rid of the Munster championship won't solve anything.

A Munster championship in the winter/spring to replace the league wouldn't have anywhere near the appeal though.

The Munster Championship isn't going to change so the change needs to come from within Leinster. A possible solution would be to look at seeded draws, if you're an Antrim, Offaly, Westmeath etc you only play Kilkenny or Galway, not both. Obviously you lose a game but the current format isn't working and fans clearly don't like it either.

The appetite for hurling is there but the current format has been a massive failure. I don't know how you resolve it when there seems to be at least 2 teams struggling to put points on the board each year.

Fans won't take an all ireland championship group match between Cork and Limerick less seriously than a Munster championship group match. It's all about how well the teams are going right now.

I'd fancy Limerick to win by a few points today at home, think they will have the hunger and look close to full strength with great options from the bench. Looking at the Waterford team named and Tynan missing for Tipp I would go for Waterford to shade it. It will be absolutely no surprise if we have any result though in those two games.

Kilkenny should account for Dublin at home. If the Dubs were to manage a win down there though it could be a defining moment for them. Hopefully all enjoyable games today.

Tynan missing for tipp is huge. A very underrated player who gets through a mountain of work. Set up John mcgraths 1st goal last week with a lovely pass.

Wonder will last week take its toll on a few of the tipp older players?
