There's other dealers in Dublin. Wasn't someone also suggesting buying from Kerry and saving thousands…

Oh the buying is easy, it's the getting it fixed which is proving tricky. I can't exactly haul it to Kerry every time I need something looked at

I'm fine with going to an indy garage, but it's difficult finding one that's got a good rep

And it seems VW can only do some of the repairs so I'm stuck with them

VW Wicklow are very good. And only 25 minutes from south Dublin

Am embarking on my first long journey tomorrow from Dublin to the backside of Mayo with a slight detour. 240km in total oneway. There are chargers at my destination.

I have the 77kwh version so I know that there should be no issues with range…but the range anxiety is real!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,667 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

ABRP (a better route planner) is handy App for planing EV journeys. Better than Plugshare or Google Maps, in my opinion. The chargers seem to have more up to date information. Ymmv obviously. I think it helps with charging anxiety.

You can add a safety charging margin into your planning.

The max range on them is 550km right? You'll do that no problem, you'll get at least 300km even if driving at 120km on motorway the whole way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,252 ✭✭✭Trigger Happy

Yeah, it can be theoretically 500km all right. I will be on a mix of motorways, regular roads and country bog roads. I suppose as this is a 'new to me' car I am hoping the battery does not have any degradation issues etc.

But all in all there is little chance I will have issues. It will be a bit of excitement anyway!

Make sure you know the charger you planning to use is AC or DC. They aren't always well labeled in the apps. Also check it has a recent check in on Plugshare so you know it's working. Too many inactive chargers on Plugshare.

There's a few sites with multiple chargers which could be good for a top up

N17 Plaza near Tuam, Circle K Castlebar and Charlestown Plaza might be useful depending on which way you're going

Might be worth popping in and giving the car 10-15 minutes on the charger while you stretch the legs, just in case you have trouble with the destination charger

I drove from Dublin to castlebar in March in a 77kwh tavascan and i was just crossed from roscommon into county mayo by the time I hit 50% battery used, so you'll be absolutely grand.

There's nowhere else in mayo that would have troubled that battery on a one way trip. It's warmer now too.

Wondering if anyone has experience with Plug and Charge on the ID4

I'm going to be doing around 5,000km around Europe this summer and was planning to get Ionity Passport to get reduced rates for this. But at the same time I dislike faffing about with the app when charging so thought the Plug and Charge option looked like it could be good.

It looks like you can basically get the same rates from VW/Elli as from Ionity for more or less the same rates for €11.99 a month (I think the first month is discounted with Ionity directly)

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this, especially abroad as it would be very handy to just be able to plug in and charge each time if possible.

I've signed up for the free option (no cheap rates) and am planning to try it on an upcoming trip to Limerick to see if it will work here.

I’ve used the we charge free option through the VW app and have used ionity Athlone plenty of times with it no problem.

I always have the VW card in my wallet as well, but have never had to use it as plug and charge always works.

My first journey in a 52kwh ID4 was just over 250km, 165km motorway, ACC at 110 on motorway and at speed limit for the rest, fully charged on collection, no stopping to charge, 19% and another purported 70km range on arrival. You'll be fine.

You were right. Nothing to worry about. 260km from Dublin to mayo with a slight detour. 51% battery remaining from 100% at departure.

I did drive fairly tamely but great to see such good efficiency.

Had it on regenerative braking and drive assist thingy all the way. No air con used.

No aircon ? It was roasting all day yesterday, you would have still made it with about 40% with aircon on, sure you'll know next time.

I did 430kms yesterday in a tavascan with same battery as you, aircon on and just drove normal motorway speeds most of the way, a little bit over at times, arrived home with 8%.

Cold aircon doesn't seem to use as much battery as warm air.

These warm temperatures are good for range, I wouldn't get that on a cold winter day.

No air con on one of the hottest days of the year? Absolute madness.

Look at the time of my post. I was driving late evening. Very pleasant.

there isn’t any reason to turn off the air con regardless of time of day. Set it to auto, if it’s cool already it will do nothing and not affect your range.

Even if it’s hot, air con doesn’t affect range that much.

Just set it to auto and let it figure it out. It will also keep moisture content in the car down which helps prevent windows fogging up.

my misses often turns it off brian it can be quite breezy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,378 ✭✭✭KCross

If it has "work to do" it can be breezy, particularly when you get in first.

Just set it to a higher/lower temp so that it doesnt have that work to do but keep it on auto. Once it gets to that set temp it should not really affect you after that.

Also, obviously, turn the vents away from your legs/face if you are sensitive to the cold air.

Nothing wrong with turning it off either but if you find yourself turning it on and off and constantly adjusting it then I'd suggest setting the right temp and leaving it on auto and let it get it right itself.

Turning on the cabin preconditioning will also solve it as it will be up to temp before you sit in.

This. I’ve had this setting on every EV I’ve owned since 2012. No reason not to. Always clean air, never have any windows misting etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 924 ✭✭✭Zurbaran

I echo the above and would also say to use pre heating/cooling. It's a great benefit over ice cars. I find it odd the amount of people worried about range.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭hold my beer

In my ID3, I've lost the ability to pre heat or cool from the app, or see the current charge/range. It lasted 2 years for free, now they want 155 quid per year for it. I assume the same will hapen my ID4 when it's 2 years old.

Mine is still going and I have the car two years since February I have reset the car to factory settings a few times, if that makes a difference.

Worrying about aircon is a real newbie thing - fuelled largely by FUD at the watercooler.

Worrying about range at all in any modern big battery EV is something you grow out of quickly. In fact, the biggest group of range worriers are non-EV owners.

…or if you have small battery. I've noticed the fan has a bigger impact on energy consumption than AC. But as you say its probably insignificant with a large battery. You can also use vents without AC.

Or open a window. But that creates more drag which defeats the purpose of doing that.

Also if I've enough energy to turn everything on, I'm going to do it. I don't do long journeys that often. But I've never been in a situation where turning AC on or off made any significant difference to my journey. I'm going to charge at the end, if its 5-10% longer make I could care less about. I'm not doing F1 style pitstops.
