Are these car scanners usefull and do they work? Saw ads popping up in Facebook. Or anything else that works on Toyota hybrid cars?

I have a cheapo ODB2 scan tool, forgotten the name. Think it cost €20 or €30, it reads error codes and can reset them. It can read other stuff from the cars engine management system too but I have never gone too deep into any that. They are worth the money imo, cause I drive older cars that generally have plenty of warnings and it's nice to know if they are important or not.

I believe you can spend €100's on sophisticated scan tools that can change engine settings etc but you are effectively into tuning at that point

I can't comment on the one in your link but I have the most basic reader similar to the one sold by Lidl or Aldi a few years ago and it's very handy.

My local mechanic has one that connects to his laptop and you can download specific software for specific cars.

You tube and Google best cheap scanners.

I've had a cheap generic one and they work fine for basic diagnostics if used with something like the Torque app.

I since upgraded to OBDEleven which gives far more options and the ability to tweak settings easily but it's a lot more expensive vs the first option (although still not mad money like a full professional system like VCDS) and it depends on what car you have as to what you'll get out of it. On my Audi (or any VAG car) you can adjust lots of stuff with it but it doesn't support (or only offers basic scanning) for most other brands.

Either way, definitely worth having regardless of the age of the car IMO. Most cars nowadays are rolling computers and when they inevitably throw up a cryptic error or warning symbol, the scanner/app will read it and you can do your own research before calling the mechanic to get an idea of what you're looking at, and more importantly how serious and potentially expensive it might be!

Car Scanner app and a cheap OBD dongle will cover you for ecu and other modules such as ABS, airbag etc.

Has saved me a fortune over the years from doing small jobs myself (e.g. replacing a sensor) after reading the fault codes. As said above its worth knowing instantly if you can drive on safely / without doing damage to your vehicle.

Can you suggest a model that will work for Toyota Hybrid models please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,515 ✭✭✭jj880

I think it would depend on obd2 / obd-II protocol for your vehicle. Needs to be more specific.

Check your car manual and do a google search for your exact vehicle model + year and "obd2 protocol" E.g.

"Toyota Prius X 2016 obd2 protocol" where X is model details.

Then look for a scan tool that supports that protocol.

That's how Id do it unless someone with more expertise can comment...

I am getting this from googling

Protocol: The specific communication protocol used by the 2018 Auris Hybrid is likely ISO 15765-4 CAN (Controller Area Network). Toyota switched to this protocol for most of their vehicles around 2008, and it's the most common modern OBD2 protocol. You can often confirm this by checking if pins 6 and 14 are active on the OBD2 connector.

You could consider something like this:

    https://amzn.eu/d/7Hz3p7y

Its showing a 20% off voucher for me so claim that if you see it. Reviews are excellent and says it covers CAN (your protocol).

    I

Thanks for this, But I prefer something that works with an app on my android phone with Bluetooth. Something simple. I just want to see whether my car has any issues rather than tweak its performance etc.

What about the below. Or is there anything better I should go for?
XTOOL AD20 Pro OBD2 Scanner, Wireless Full System OBD2 Code Reader Car Diagnostic Tool, Free Update, Oil Reset, Smog Check, Performance Test, Voltage Test, Engine Fault Code Reader for iOS & Android

Have that exact one (about 6 years) and its worked fine on several VAGs and Fords. I keep it in the boot of the car because I've had intermittent faults before and its handy to check any as they arise. Also useful to check and clear any old faults before an NCT.

Not sure on those. Note the 2nd one you posted specifically says it doesn't work on hybrids.

May I know what about the below? Would it be an overkill?

ANCEL AD310 Pro 3 in 1 OBD2 Code Reader and Car Battery Tester, Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner with APP, 12V 24V 100-2000 CCA Battery/Cranking/Charging Test, for All Car Engine.

The one listed by jj880 is probably all you need. If you want more features then you really want a PC (computer) based system where its easy to access the info on screen and via a keyboard. If you have too much functionality on a small handheld device its not going to be that easy to get at via a 4 button key pad. Then if you want a bluetooth connection to a phone just get a cheap bluetooth ODB2 connector.

Edit> Where are you OP? If you say you might find someone with a scanner nearby that will show you want it can do?

Personally I dont like the combo. That looks like battery tester only. Get a proper battery charger if you're going to have clamps. I have an obd reader and a separate battery tester thats also a charger. Works really well.

Honestly Continental OP is recommending the standard Ancel AD310, it looks handy to have and good value. You wont be using it often and wont have to fiddle with bluetooth. If you want a battery charger I have something like this which is great:

How much would that work out at, delivered to Ireland?

Would it incur extra charges? Customs/vat?

For jj880's link on Amazon what you see is what you pay. VAT + Duty included and free P&P.

I got the below reply from Ancel, regarding AD310 PRO.

AD310 Pro OBD2 scanner can only be used with the Ancel APP and cannot be connected with other Android APPs.

So back in search for a generic ODB2 scanner. Can someone suggest a free Android app that work with a good

    ODB2 scanner?

Honestly the cabled one linked to is about as simple to use and generic as it gets. I don't see any advantage in a bluetooth connector.

I ordered an Ancel ODB2 Pro before I saw the responses here, but was too late to cancel it. When I got it I just tested it and to my surprise it didnt support many of the functions they boasted in the ad. So I returned it to Amazon today. Some snips attached here so that no one else make the same purchase mistake!

As per Birka's suggestion, when I google for an ODB2 scanner I am getting tons of results that may not suit me at all.

Can any one of you please mention something specific from your purchase experience?

Was just about to post this in Bargain alerts and saw this thread.

The name is a bit confusing but I was recommending the actual Car Scanner app - this one: https://www.carscanner.info/

If you're going to go along those lines, you need a decent OBD dongle - maybe something like this: https://www.vgatemall.com/products-detail/i-9/

If you'd prefer a dedicated handheld device, you can contact the likes of OBDPrice (https://www.obdprice.eu/) with your VIN and a list of the functions that you want to use and they'll tell you what'll work from the Ancel range.

The phone app approach is the cheapest way but they all vary in terms of what they'll show. Car Scanner shows completely different levels of detail according to the make/model that its used on. If you're around Newbridge/Kildare you're welcome to try out mine to see if it meets your needs.

Many thanks Birka. Ordered one at Amazon UK. Let me give it a try.

Do any one of you know any FREE fully functional car scanner app for android? Many apps need to be paid for extra functionality or full functionality.

What exact car or what range of cars or ages? What are you trying to do? Garage level equipment covers a lot. Phone apps can cover a lot but varies by vehicle. There are some cheap/free windows software that is quite good for fords such as forscan. With them all you need to be aware the codes is just the start. You then need to Google the car with the error code and see what root cause was for others. You need to learn how to diagnose abd root cause and often these will pull up lots of errors that have nothing to do with the issue.
